Two new schemes for defaulting companies

Hyderabad, July 09: The Registrar of Company Affairs, Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Govt of India has introduced two schemes namely company Law Settlement Scheme 2010 and Easy Exit Scheme 2010 for defaulting companies.

Registrar of Companies MV Chakranarayan told presspersons here on Thursday that the object of the Company Law Settlement Scheme is to provide opportunity to the defaulting companies to enable them to make their default good by filing belated documents and to become a regular complaint company.

Court admonishes Raju’s lawyers

Hyderabad, July 09: The lawyers representing main accused in the multi-crore accounting fraud in the company formerly known as Satyam Computers, B Ramalinga Raju were admonished by the Special Court hearing the case.

The Court’s admonishment came after the lawyers failed to submit an affidavit whether Raju, presently undergoing treatment at the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences for Hepatitis C, could be examined through a questionnaire.

Govt faces torrid time over Babli, Almatti

Hyderabad, July 09: The state government had to face a torrid time in the Assembly from the opposition on its alleged failure to bring a halt to the ongoing illegal construction of irrigation projects on Krishna and Godavari rivers by the neighbouring Maharashtra and Karnataka states.

The Opposition parties targeted the government by accusing the Congress party of being responsible for the illegal constructions of the illegal projects.

Human rights court halts Hamza extradition

London, July 09: Human rights judges today ordered a halt to the extraditions of Babar Ahmad and radical preacher Abu Hamza, both wanted in the US on terror charges.

The Strasbourg court said it wanted more time to examine possible human rights breaches if the men face trial on charges which could mean life sentences without parole.

Kolkata, July 09: In an apparent disagreement with his own party, senior CPI(M) leader and West Bengal Assembly Speaker H A Halim today said that had Jyoti Basu become the Prime Minister “the course of the country’s history would have changed”.

“Had Jyoti Basu become Prime Minister the course of the country’s history would have changed,” Halim said at the unveiling of a portrait of Basu at the Assembly premises.

“But since he was a loyal party member he accepted the decision not to be become the Prime Minister,” he added.

Thousands rally for captured Israeli soldier

Jerusalem, July 09: The mother of the captive Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit last night made an impassioned public appeal to the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, to negotiate her son’s release.

Iran denying woman will be executed by stoning

Tehran, July 09: Iran’s government is denying reports that an Iranian woman convicted of adultery will be executed by stoning, though her death sentence may still be carried out by some other method.

In the Islamic republic’s first public statement on the case of Sakineh Mohammedie Ashtiani, 42, the Iranian Embassy in London, England, said Thursday that “this mission denies the false news aired in this respect and … according to information from the relevant judicial authorities in Iran, she will not be executed by stoning punishment.

Israel unlikely to surprise with Iran attack: Obama

Jerusalem, July 09: US President Barack Obama said in an Israeli TV interview broadcast today it is highly unlikely the Jewish State would surprise Washington with an attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities.

“It is unacceptable for Iran to posses nuclear weapons and we are going to do everything we can to prevent that happening,” Obama told Israel’s Channel 2 television in an interview taped yesterday.

“Neither of us try to surprise each other,” he said, when asked if he was concerned Israel would surprise the US with an attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities.

US swapping spies with Russia

New York, July 09: Ten Russian spy suspects are to be deported according to an agreement between the US and Russia, a New York federal judge ruled Thursday.

The suspects, who pleaded guilty to US charges, apparently will be swapped with spy suspects being held by Russia.

During the hearing, which was presided over by Judge Kima M. Wood, a suspect who was previously identified as “Juan Lazaro” revealed his real name to be Mikhail Vasenkov and said he was of Russian origin.

Sanctions will not alter Iran N-programme: Ahmadinejad

Abuja, July 09: Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told that new sanctions recently slapped on his country by Western nations would not alter Tehran’s nuclear programme.

No matter how many sanctions resolutions are approved, “there will be no minor change in our nuclear programme,” he said through a translator after attending a summit in Nigeria.

“Those resolutions are only paper. What’s going to shape our future is our determination.”

Mumbai, July 09: Indian origin actress Sarita Choudhury, best known for her roles in “Kama Sutra: A Tale Of Love” and “Mississippi Masala”, will be seen on Indian screens again, this time in an emotional drama titled “For Real”.

“My role in ‘For Real’ is that of a mother of two kids who gave up a singing career in London and moved to India to be a housewife,” Sarita, 43, told IANS in an e-mail interview from New York.

‘Headley disclosures tie LeT to Pakistani Intelligence’

Washington, July 09: Indian investigators’ interrogation of Pakistani American David Coleman Headley has yielded key disclosures linking terrorists behind the November 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks to Pakistani intelligence, according to a US terrorism research group.

Headley, who in March pleaded guilty to 12 federal terrorism charges including providing material support to the Pakistan-based terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), also disclosed the names of the terrorist handlers who orchestrated the attacks from Pakistan, said Washington-based Investigative Project on Terrorism (IPT).

Islam court gets 1st Women judges

Kuala Lampur, July 09: The appointment of the first two women judges to Malaysia’s Islamic courts was hailed Thursday as a move to address the gender imbalance in the country’s religious judiciary.

Premier Najib Razak announced the appointments, made by the king in May, as an example of the government’s commitment to transforming the Sharia judiciary.

“The appointments were made to enhance justice in cases involving families and women’s rights and to meet current needs,” Najib was quoted as saying by state news agency Bernama last week.

Russia-US spy swap appears to be in motion

New York, July 09: The largest Russia-US spy swap since the Cold War appeared to be in motion Thursday, with up to 10 guilty pleas expected in New York by defendants accused of spying for Russia in exchange for the release of convicted Russian spies. A Russian convicted of spying for the United States was reportedly plucked from a Moscow prison and flown to Vienna.

A swap would have significant consequences for efforts between Washington and Moscow to repair ties chilled by a deepening atmosphere of suspicion.

Brussels, July 09: U.S. Defence Secretary Robert Gates urged gays and lesbians to fill out a Pentagon survey before any possible repeal of the ban on openly gay people serving in the military.

One group, the Servicemembers Legal Defence Network, had warned that answering the questionnaire e-mailed to 400,000 service members could inadvertently expose any gays or lesbians who respond to expulsion from the military under its “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” law.

12 people killed in accident in WB

Bankura, July 09: Twelve members of a wedding party were killed this evening when a speeding truck hit their car on National Highway-40 at Barjora in Bankura district of West Bengal. Police said ten people were killed on the spot and two others died on their way to a local hospital.

All occupants of the car, going from nearby Kadasole village, were killed in the accident, police said. Local villagers began the rescue operations and extricated the bodies and the seriously injured persons from the mangled car using gas cutters, police said.

Two Uttar Pradesh cops held for double murder

Ghaziabad, July 09: Two policemen posted in Uttar Pradesh’s Special Operation Group (SOG) at Baghpat district have been arrested for the double murder of two property dealers here last month, police said.

Constable Praveen Bansal and Head Constable Abdul have been arrested for the murder of Sanjeev Sharma and his partner Prakash Chand Khanna June 7 in Ghaziabad, police said.

Police claimed three others Sandeep Gurjar, Azad Bansal and Chahat have been found to be involved in the mysterious double murders.

Maoist bandh: 3 including cop killed, trains disrupted

Ranchi, July 09: Maoists killed three people, including a policeman, attacked railway property and torched a police building on Thursday, the second day of their two-day shutdown in five states called to protest the killing of a top leader.

Four Maoists were also shot dead by securitymen.

The shutdown was called to protest the killing of Maoist leader Cherukuri Rajkumar alias Azad in Andhra Pradesh July 2.
