Andhra govt under fire for neglecting health care services

Hyderabad, July 09: The Andhra Pradesh government came under fire from the entire opposition in the state Assembly on Friday for grossly neglecting the health care services even as Chief Minister K Rosaiah announced that the government was contemplating to make one year service in rural areas compulsory for MBBS students as well.

The TDP, CPI, CPM and BJP members staged a walk out from the Assembly during Question Hour while Praja Rajyam and Lok Satta Party members registered their protest on the issue.

Mattis is an erudite combat veteran known for quoting poetry and openly expressing his enthusiasm for “killing the enemy,” Los Angeles Times reported on Thursday.

The nomination that was announced on Thursday brought Secretary Gates under fire for choosing a general who was officially rebuked over his remarks in 2005 regarding the killing of Afghans.

Delhi Most Unsafe For Women: UN Survey

New Delhi: If you are a woman living in the Capital and you are perpetually scared of being sexually harassed, you’re not alone. About 85 per cent of Delhi’s women feel the same way, this according to a survey conducted by the Delhi government along with the United Nations and Jagori, an NGO.

The survey was conducted on more than 5000 women in the Capital. According to the study three out of five women reported facing sexual harassment even during the day and 50 per cent of the women interviewed said they were harassed on public transport.

Egg thrown at Australian PM

Sydney, July 09: An egg was thrown at Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard in the Australian city of Perth Friday morning. The missile, however, missed its target and instead hit a security officer.

Police have arrested a 55-year-old man for the incident.

The egg attack took place at the entrance of ABC studios at 9.30 a.m. when Gillard arrived for a radio show, Perth Now reported.

The egg missed her, but hit a female security officer.

“The man was in the cafe adjoining the ABC studio entrance before the egg was thrown,” a police spokesman was quoted as saying.

Election panel to decide on complaint against BSP

New Delhi, July 09: The Supreme Court Friday asked the Election Commission to decide on the maintainability of a complaint against putting up of Bahujan Samaj Party’s election symbol ‘elephant’ in public places in Uttar Pradesh in violation of the commission’s notification.

An apex court bench headed by Chief Justice of India S.H. Kapadia said the commission would place its decision before it. Thereafter, the court will examine the decision and, if required, more powers will be given to the commission for further action.

‘Tere Bin Laden’ release postponed in US

New Delhi, July 09: The US release of ‘Tere Bin Laden?, a satire on the great American dream and the post 9/11 world, has been postponed for a later date.

The film is slated to hit theatres in India on July 16. It will also see a simultaneous release in Pakistan.

“We are releasing the film in India, Pakistan, Dubai, Australia, UK and other Asian markets but not in the US right now. US is a very important market for us. We first want to see the response. We will release the film in the second phase,” Sharma, who has written and directed the film, told PTI.

Militants open fire in Sopore, curfew continues in Valley

Srinagar, July 09: Two policemen were injured in two separate attacks by militants in Jammu and Kashmir’s Sopore town, while an indefinite curfew continued in Srinagar and other major towns of the Kashmir Valley today, officials said.

“Militants fired at the State Bank of India building in Sopore town late on Thursday, injuring one policeman. In another incident, militants fired at a police vehicle in the same town early today and the driver was hurt,” a senior police officer said.

“Both have been shifted to hospital and doctors say they are out of danger,” he added.

Motorcycle Bomber Kills 45 Injures 100: Pak

Khar, July 09: A suicide bomber on a motorcycle has struck outside a government office in a tribal region where Pakistan’s army has fought the Taliban, killing at least 18 people and wounding nearly 100 others.

The bomber detonated explosives near the Yakaghund village office of the Mohmand tribal region’s assistant political agent.

Security official Esa Khan said the bomber was on a motorcycle and detonated his weapons when asked to stop.

Mother, son found murdered at their Delhi home

New Delhi, July 09: A 40-year-old woman and her five-year-old son were found brutally murdered at their home in west Delhi’s Patel Nagar area early Friday.

Property dealer Pawan Nagia returned home at about 3 a.m. to find the bodies of his wife Anuradha and son Cherish.

“The entry into the house seems to be friendly. The mother and son were brutally murdered as the attacker first strangulated them and then stabbed them with a sharp object several times,” a police officer said.

Woman kills self, two children

Lucknow, July 09: A woman allegedly set herself on fire along with her two minor children in Uttar Pradesh’s Allahabad district following a heated argument with her husband, police said Friday. All three were killed.

Kanti, 35, a resident of the Isrikipura village in Allahabad, some 200 km from Lucknow, set herself ablaze late Thursday along with her eight-year-old daughter Urmila and three-year-old son Sagar.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that marital discord was the main reason behind the incident,” police inspector Shashikant Singh told reporters in Allahabad.

Israel signals settlements freeze lift

Jerusalem, July 09: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has signaled that he will not extend a 10-month freeze on illegal settlement activities in the occupied West Bank.

The Israeli premier, who was addressing the influential US foreign policy think tank, the Council on Foreign Relations in New York on Thursday, said that a freeze put in place in August 2009 has so far failed to spur the Palestinian Authority to enter direct peace talks, Reuters reported.

Omar Abdullah calls all-party meeting on Monday

Srinagar, July 09: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday night called an all-party meeting on Monday to discuss the volatile situation in the state where the army has been called in to stage marches in curfew-bound towns to restore law and order, an official said.

Abdullah has called the meeting to “seek a common approach” to the problem in the state as strict curfew continued in major towns for the past two days following violent protests over deaths of people in security forces firing.

51-hour countdown for PSLV-C15 to start tomorrow

Chennai, July 09: The 51-hour countdown for the 17th flight launch of Indian space agency’s Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle PSLV-C 15 from Sriharikota spaceport is expected to begin tomorrow morning.

Preparations were in full swing for the launch of the PSLV-C-15 on July 12. All the parameters for the launch were doing well and the 51-hour countdown was expected to start at 6 am tomorrow, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISR0) officials said.

Nairobi, July 09: Veteran insurgents from Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan have relocated to the chaotic country of Somalia in large enough numbers to spark worry inside the international community, Kenya’s foreign minister said today.

Calling the situation in Somalia “very, very dire,” Moses M Wetangula said the militants have relocated to Kenya’s northern neighbour because of the safehaven offered by a country with no functioning government.

Six Lakhs Robbed From Passport Office

Hyderabad, July 09: Unidentified persons have robbed a woman of Rs. 6 lakhs in the passport office in Secunderabad, on Thursday.

According to police, the lady who came to the passport office had the cash in her handbag. As she was talking to the passport authorities, unknown persons had decamped with her bag. The lady who noticed that her bag was missing, complained to the police. Police registered a case and are investigating.

EC notice to AP Congress president

Hyderabad, July 09: The Election Commission tonight issued a notice to Andhra Pradesh Congress president D Srinivas for allegedly seeking votes in the name of caste for the coming bye-election to Nizamabad Urban assembly constituency.

“We have issued notice to him over the matter,” state Chief Electoral Officer I V Subba Rao told.

The EC’s decision came following a complaint by Telangana Jagruti Sanstha president K Kavita that Srinivas was seeking votes in the name of caste. Kavita is daughter of TRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao.
