SC’s ire over non implementation of Juvenile Welfare Act

New Delhi, July 09: The Supreme Court today expressed its anger over government’s failure to implement the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2000, for corrective measures and reformation of juvenile offenders saying the “entire Act has been made a mockery”.

“This is a pathetic situation. The entire Act has been made a mockery. Most of the states have not complied with the Act.

“With reference to some states, there is only nominal compliance,” a Bench of Justices R V Raveendran and H L Gokhale, said.

Fatwa issued against vuvuzela

Abu Dhabi, July 09: The vuvuzela, the plastic trumpet made famous by the football World Cup in South Africa, is in trouble in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as the authorities here have issued a fatwa against it.

The plastic trumpet, whose drone has been likened to a swarm of bees, has become the unmistakable background sound of the World Cup.

The fatwa issued by the UAE’s General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments says that above 100 decibels, the buzzing sound of the vuvuzela is “haram”, The National newspaper reported Friday.

Water recedes, but thousands still marooned in Haryana, Punjab

Chandigarh, July 09: The water level in the flood-affected districts of Haryana and Punjab started to recede Friday but thousands of marooned people continued to suffer owing to lack of relief from government agencies, even as the toll climed to 20.

Of the 20 deaths reported so far, 15 have been in Punjab and five in Haryana, with 4-5 people missing after being washed away in both the states. Heavy rains, followed by breaches in rivers and irrigation canals in some areas of both states caused have floods since Tuesday.

New Delhi, July 09: During the interrogation of terror suspect T Nasir, the Bengaluru police have stumbled upon an interesting book that is used by Indian Mujahideen operatives to recruit jihadis.

Jerusalem to Babri is the most popular book among new recruits of the terror outfit, sources told.

“During Nasir’s interrogation, he had told us about such a book being circulated among the new cadres. Nasir also claimed that this was one of the latest additions to the IM’s ‘recruitment kit’,” said a senior official.

Andhra legislator held for poll code violation

Hyderabad, July 09: A woman legislator of the ruling Congress party and her husband were arrested Friday for violating the election code, police said.

P. Padmavathi, a member of legislative council, and her husband P. Bhaskar were arrested in Warangal district for distributing sarees to commemorate the 61st birth anniversary of late chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy Thursday.

Since the election code is in operation in the district for July 27 by-elections to Warangal West assembly constituency, police filed a case against them on a complaint by the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS).

SP asks BJP, RSS to rein in Gadkari

New Delhi, July 09: Criticising Nitin Gadkari’s remarks on the Afzal Guru issue, the Samajwadi Party today said the BJP and the RSS should ask him to desist from making such statements.

“The SP criticises such a statement coming from the president of a party which claims to be an alternative force,” party national spokesperson Mohan Singh said.

He said such statements from a politician do not look good. “We request the BJP and the RSS to ask Gadkari not to make such remarks,” he said.

Ambati issued noticed over outburst against CM

Hyderabad, July 09: The Congress Disciplinary Committee on Friday issued a notice to PCC general secretary Ambati Rambabu to appear before it on July 12 and explain his outburst against Chief Minister K Rosaiah.

The notice was issued after 20 Pradesh Congress Committee office-bearers filed a complaint against Mr Rambabu for criticising Mr Rosaiah. Mr Rambabu had said that it was wrong for the Chief Minister to celebrate his own birthday on a grand scale within a year of the death of former chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy.

Nityananda’s bail conditions

Bangalore, July 09: Karnataka High Court today relaxed the bail conditions of self-styled godman Nityananda Swami, facing rape and other criminal charges, allowing him to preach.

When the application filed by Nityananda came up, Justice Subhash B Adi relaxed the bail conditions further allowing him to report to the respective police station once in 30 days instead of once in 15 days.

EC censures Vijayashanti for inflammatory remarks

Hyderabad, July 09: The Election Commission today “censured” TRS MP Vijayashanti for allegedly making inflammatory comments in violation of the model code of conduct imposed ahead of the by-election in Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh.

“Election Commission has taken a serious note of the violation of model code of conduct by her. As a responsible political leader, she should not have made such comments,” Chief Electoral Officer I V Subba Rao told reporters here.

Gold dips by Rs 100 to Rs 18,600 per 10g

New Delhi, July 09: Gold prices fell by Rs 100 to Rs 18,600 per ten grams in the national capital today amid a weakening trend overseas and reduced offtake by retailers at existing higher levels.

Marketmen said a weakening trend in international markets, which set the price trend in domestic markets, mainly weighed on the trading sentiment. Gold in overseas markets fell 0.06 per cent to USD 1,197.80 an ounce.

Reduced offtake at existing higher levels was another dampening factor, they said.
