Death anniversary begins at Taj Mahal

Agra, July 10: The 355th Urs (death anniversary) of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan is being observed at the greatest of all monuments he built — the Taj Mahal.

Tens of thousands of devotees thronged the 17th century marvel especially for the three-day event that began Friday.

During this period, people pay homage at the graves of Shah Jahan and his wife Mumtaz, in whose memory the Taj Mahal was built. The graves otherwise are not open for public viewing.

Security personnel expect a big rush until Sunday. Entry to the Taj is free Saturday and Sunday.

Curfew relaxed in Kashmir Valley, 20 people arrested

Srinagar, July 10: Barring Sopore and Pulwama, curfew relaxation continued in the Kashmir Valley today to allow people to offer special prayers on the occasion of a Muslim festival as police cracked down on stone pelters and arrested 20 people allegedly responsible for instigating mobs.

The four-day-old curfew was relaxed in the entire valley last night after a high-level meeting presided over by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to enable people offer special prayers overnight at the Hazratbal shrine for Shab-e-Mehraj, an important occasion on the religious calendar here.

Sunita Williams headed for the stars again

Washington, July 10: Indian American astronaut Sunita Williams, who holds the record of the longest spaceflight (195 days) for female space travellers, will head for the stars once again in June 2012.

Williams, 44, would take over as station commander at the International Space Station that was her home in the sky from Dec 9, 2006 to June 22, 2007.

She will be joined on the Soyuz 31 flight to the space station by flight engineers Russian cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko and Japanese astronaut Akihiko Hoshide, the space agencies of the three nations announced Friday.

Obama calls Abbas, favours direct Palestine-Israel talks

Washington, July 10: US President Barack Obama called up Palestinian National Authority (PNA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas and discussed ways to “advance to direct talks” towards building peace between Palestine and Israel, the White House said.

Obama, in the phone talk Friday, expressed his “strong support” for Abbas’ leadership on behalf of the Palestinian people, and noted progress in the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian proximity talks, Xinhua quoted a White House statement as saying.

Online consultant groomed teenagers for sex

London, July 10: An online consultant whose job was to advise young people on their sexual development groomed teenagers for sex and was caught red-handed while arranging to meet a “trained” girl.

Simon Beard, 56, a consultant at the National Youth Agency, was caught red-handed in an undercover investigation by Sky News reporters who were looking into cases of men who attempted to groom children for sex.

The reporters entered a teenage online chat room and posed as a 13-year-old girl called “Amy”.

UAE fatwa bars blasts from vuvuzelas

Dubai, July 10: The horns that have blared at World Cup matches in South Africa make an unholy racket, according to a religious edict in the United Arab Emirates.

A fatwa by the UAE’s General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments declares that the now-famous blast from the plastic vuvuzela is not permitted in the Gulf country if it exceeds 100 decibels, about the sound of a passing train. It says the typical vuvuzela blast is up to 127 decibels.

Centre blocked several mega projects in Bihar: Nitish

Patna, July 10: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar today criticised the Centre for allegedly blocking implementation of proposals for mega projects for ethanol and power in the state and renewed his demand for according a special state status to it.

“Several private enterpreneurs submitted proposals for investing thousands of crores of rupees for setting up projects for manufacturing ethanol and thermal power,” Kumar told a press conference.

German Archbishop admits mistakes in sex abuse scandal

Freiburg (Germany), July 10: The head of the German Catholic church, Archbishop Robert Zollitsch, admitted Friday that he made mistakes in his handling of a sex abuse scandal during the 1990s, and asked the victims for forgiveness.

Zollitsch said the diocese of Freiburg, which he heads, had known about abuse cases in a small town in the Black Forest far earlier than it had previously let on.

Quran doesn’t call for stoning: Expert

Tehran, July 10: International outcry and the pleas of a devoted son seem to have saved an Iranian woman from being stoned to death for adultery.

But while Sakineh Mohammedie Ashitani has been granted a reprieve, she is not the only woman sentenced to be stoned for adultery in Iran. There have been at least six sentences carried out since 2006, says Ann Harrison, an Iran expert at Amnesty International in London.

Adultery is the only crime that carries such a penalty in Iranian law, she said.

Shaikh has been arrested for allegedly raping and killing a nine-year-old girl in Kurla (east) last month. Not just food, the 19-year-old has also been demanding an air-conditioned space to sleep in.

“We are being driven up the wall, fulfilling his demands,” said an officer from Nehru Nagar police station. “He has been constantly demanding VIP treatment.”
