1,375 murders cases is still unsolved

New Delhi, July 10: At least 1,375 murder cases here are yet to be solved by Delhi Police, and almost half of them are over five years old, a right to information (RTI) activist has said.

In their reply to RTI applicant Dev Ashish Bhattacharya, police said 644 of the 1,375 unsolved murder cases took place more than five years ago.

Om Puri’s home burgled

Mumbai, July 10: Bollywood actor Om Puri Saturday lodged a police complaint that his Andheri flat was robbed of Rs.100,000 in cash and jewellery worth Rs.90,000.

The First Information Report (FIR) was lodged at Versova police station, a police official said.

“Om Puri has reported about the robbery. The house was locked at night. But in the morning, they found the lock was broken and the house ransacked,” the official told IANS.

“He has claimed that cash of Rs.100,000 and jewellery worth Rs.90,000 has been stolen,” he added.

Jagan can aspire, dream and try to be CM: Rosaiah

Hyderabad, July 10: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K. Rosaiah Saturday said Congress MP Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy can dream and aspire for the chief minister’s post and that there is a method to it.

“Jagan is a young boy with a future. He needs proper advice. He can dream, aspire and try for the CM’s post but there is a method to get it,” Rosaiah said in an interview to NDTV.

“He could’ve waited for sometime and staked his claim,” he added.

Europeans back veil ban, Americans opposed: Survey

Europe, July 10: While most Americans oppose banning face-covering Islamic veils, most western Europeans questioned in a new global poll say the garments should be forbidden – especially in France, where a ban may soon be a reality.

Several European countries have been considering bans on such veils, with special attention on France, home to western Europe’s largest Muslim community and a strongly secular government.

The lower house of France’s parliament is expected to approve a divisive bill Tuesday that would make it illegal to wear full-face veils in public.

Gadkari sends BJP team to Punjab to review flood losses

New Delhi, July 10: BJP President Nitin Gadkari has deputed a committee comprising party secretaries Navjot Singh Sidhu and Captain Abhimanyu to visit flood affected areas in Punjab and take stock of the situation. “This two-member committee, along with respective state leaders, will be going into the preliminary review of the losses caused by the devastating flash floods in Punjab & Haryana,” the party said in a statement.

Body Found On Saudi Airplane Wheels

Riyadh, July 10: The remains of a body were found on the rear wheels of an airplane that landed in the Saudi capital of Riyadh from Beirut, Lebanon’s transportation minister said Saturday.

Minister Ghazi Aridi confirmed that the remains were found on an Airbus 320 jet from the Saudi Nasair company that landed in Riyadh just after midnight with 130 people on board.

The remains were discovered shortly after the plane landed while maintenance was being done.

Aridi said the body has not been identified and no further details were immediately available, pending investigation.

Pak security forces kill 25 militants

Islamabad, July 10: At least 25 militants including a Taliban commander have been killed as Pakistan’s military jets continue to pound the militants’ hideouts in the Orakzai tribal region.

According to a local TV channel, security forces launched attacks on Friday backed by gunship helicopters and fighter jets on the hideouts of militants in Nandarmela and Kot Taley regions of Orakzai agency near the Pak-Afghan border, killing 25 militants and injuring 21 others, a Press TV correspondent reported.

The air strikes also killed a key Taliban commander, identified as Wasi-ur-Rehman.

Afghans protest US killing of civilians

Kabul, July 10: Angry Afghans have taken to the streets of Mazar-e-Sharif to protest against the rising number of civilian casualties at the hands of US-led troops.

Hundreds of protesters chanted slogans against foreign forces and Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

The demonstration followed the killing of two civilians by US troops on the outskirts of the northern Afghan city on Wednesday.

NATO soldiers also killed one Afghan and arrested nine others in Paktia province.

More RSS activists involved in Ajmer blast?

Ahmedabad, July 10: More members of the Rashtriya Swayam Sevak may have been involved in planning the Ajmer blast in October 2007, according to sources in the Central Bureau of Investigation.

Devender Gupta, who was arrested in connection with the Ajmer blast and the Mecca Masjid blast, has reportedly revealed that RSS members Varshney and Ashok Berry were also involved in planning the blast.

PCC warns rebels to withdraw nominations

Hyderabad, July 10: The Pradesh Congress Committee on Saturday warned rebel candidates to withdraw their nominations for the forthcoming by-elections to five of the 12 Assembly constituencies in Telangana region or face disciplinary action.

Rebel Congress candidates have filed their nominations from Dharmapuri, Vemulawada, Sircilla, Huzurabad and Korutla constituencies, denting the prospects of the party’s officially named candidates.

The Congress told the rebel candidates to withdraw their nominations on or before July 12.

No progress in US Woman’s rape case

Hyderabad, July 10: The alleged rape of an American woman in Banjara Hills is giving sleepless nights to the police brass who have so far failed to crack the case even as pressure is building on them from the US Consulate.

Lalu, Paswan arrested during Bihar shutdown

Patna, July 10: Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad and Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) chief Ram Vilas Paswan were arrested here Saturday while protesting on the streets during a day-long shutdown called in Bihar against the hike in fuel prices, police said.

Holding their party flags and shouting slogans, both protested along hundreds of their party workers at Dak Bungalow Square in the heart of Patna.

Paswan was arrested along with his party legislators and workers and taken to transit camp, a police official said.

Drug that grows new nerve cells identified

Washington, July 10: Researchers have identified a drug that makes new nerve cells grow and replace damaged ones, a discovery that could help treat dementia.

The researchers infused 1,000 different chemicals into the brains of mice to see their effects.

Then, they identified eight potential chemicals before focussing their attention on P7C3, reports Cell.

P7C3 was identified as successful in the hippocampus, the part of the brain that is used for learning and memory, says a Alzheimer’s Society release.

20 needles in woman’s body in Brazil

Rio De Janeiro, July 10: Doctors discovered more than 20 needles in the body of a Brazilian woman, the media reported Saturday.

The 35-year-old woman in the state of Para complained of aches in her ear, and the needles were discovered accidentally during an X-ray examination.

Doctors found 24-26 steel needles in the woman’s soft tissues. They will decide whether to subject her to surgery to remove the objects.

Death toll from Pakistan bomb attack reaches 102

Islamabad, July 10: The death toll from a suicide attack in a volatile border region of Pakistan climbed to 102 on Saturday, showing the militants’ continued ability to stage deadly strikes despite losing ground in army offensives.

The Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), or Taliban Movement of Pakistan, claimed responsibility for Friday’s attack in Mohmand, a Pashtun region on the northwestern border with Afghanistan, where security forces have stepped up operations against militants in recent months.

Man hangs self on court premises

Visakhapatnam, July 10: A man committed suicide by hanging himself, in the court premises here on Saturday.

Police identified the person as a canteen owner. Police believe that he has resorted to the extreme step, due to financial problems. Police sent the body for post mortem and registered a case. (NSS)

Yemen accuses rebels of kidnapping oil workers

Sana’a, July 10: Yemen accused Shi’ite rebels on Saturday of kidnapping five oil workers this week and said it had foiled an attempt to blow up an oil pipeline.

Yemen is struggling to curb a separatist movement in the south and cement a ceasefire with Shi’ite rebels in the north, and is under pressure to combat a resurgent al Qaeda wing.

The Interior Ministry said that five employees of a state oil company were kidnapped by the rebels on Thursday.
