He harked back to the sequence in RED ALERT which had an uncanny resemblance to the real life drama, in which he was required to carry the bodies of dead policemen, dump them on to a cycle rickshaw, and peddle them to a town square to be hanged.

Illegal torture plagues government

London, June 30: The Britain’s High Court judges and the New-York based Human Rights Watch are pressing government to reconsider an interrogation permit that resulted in illegal detention and torture of terror suspects.

Reprieve, a legal charity in the High Court, said the governmental advice to MI5 and MI6 officers interrogating suspects detained in other countries since the 9/11 attacks in 2001 justifies torture.

Why CRPF keep falling victim to Maoists?

Raipur, June 30: The Chhattisgarh Police and experts on Maoist warfare are blaming the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) for repeatedly falling victim to Maoist guerrillas.

Police sources speaking on the condition of anonymity say that the CRPF personnel are not only poorly trained to operate in jungle terrain but are also reluctant to take on the well-entrenched Maoists.

Last date for submission of Haj passports extended

Lucknow, June 30: In a bid to facilitate Haj pilgrimage, the Uttar Pradesh Haj committee has extended the last date for submission of passports from June 30 to July 15, officials said here today.

The order regarding extension of submission dates has been issued after a government order in this regard, Officer on Special Duty of the committee M A A Khan said.

Khan said that the decision was taken in wake of the problems faced by successful applicants to procure their passports.

Ker Assembly: Walkout over irregularities in voters list

Thiruvananthapuram, June 30: The Congress-led UDF Opposition in Kerala today staged a walkout in the Assembly, alleging that government was trying to sabotage the coming local body polls by delaying voters list and delimitation of wards.

Rejecting the Opposition charge, Finance Minister T M Thomas Issac said draft of voters list would be published tomorrow. Anomalies, if any in the list, could be rectified as per the established procedure.

CBI seeks second opinion: few fresh reports on Raju by July 1

Rome, June 30: An appeals court in Italy has convicted an ally of Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi to seven years in prison on charges of Mafia association.

Marcello Dell’Utri was handed down a verdict clearing that he previously had links with Cosa Nostra, the original Mafia.

Dell’Utri had been sentenced to nine years in prison. The appeals court upheld his conviction but reduced his term in prison to seven years.

No envoy before Israel apology: Turkey

Ankara, June 30: Turkey says the strain in its diplomatic ties with Israel will not heal unless it formally apologizes for the killing of Turkish nationals aboard a Gaza aid convoy.

Nine Turkish citizens, including a Turkish-American teenager, were killed in the May 31 attack by Israeli navy commandos on the Gaza Freedom Flotilla while the civilian aid convoy was in international waters.

The move drew strong condemnation from the international community and prompted several countries to summon Israeli ambassadors while an enraged Turkey recalled its envoy from Tel Aviv.
