Bihar court asks Raj Thackeray to appear on July 25

Bettiah (Bihar), June 30: Taking cognizance of charges against MNS chief Raj Thackeray for allegedly inciting violence against aspirants from the state for Railway jobs in Mumbai, a Bihar court has asked him to appear before it next month to explain his position.

Chief Judicial Magistrate of West Champaran M K Dwivedi passed the order yesterday while hearing a criminal revision petition and asked Raj to appear on July 25.

KCR should provide proof of allegations against Congress: Ponnam

Hyderabad, June 30: Congress Member of Parliament from Karimnagar Ponnam Prabhakar on Wednesday challenged Telangana Rashtra Samithi chief k Chandrasekhar Rao to provide proof of his statement that the Congress was responsible for the postponement of by-polls to the Sircilla and Vemulawada Assembly constituencies.

Talking to media persons on Wednesday, Mr Prabhakar said that he was willing to provide proof to his statement that the rift between Harish Rao and K Tarakarama Rao was the reason behind the postponement of voting in the two constituencies.

TRS will become redundant after T-State is formed: Congress

Hyderabad, June 30: “The most worrying factor for Telangana Rashtra Samithi president K Chandrasekhar Rao is that the TRS will become obsolete once a separate Telangana State is announced. This is the reason why KCR is in favour of a United Andhra Pradesh,” said Congress MLA from Sangareddy, T Jayaprakash Reddy on Wednesday.

Talking to media persons, Mr Jayaprakash Reddy said that the frequent elections forced on the people by TRS MLAs resigning on the slightest pretext will be the reason for the party’s defeat in the forthcoming by-elections.

Gazan kids suffer from malnutrition

Gaza, June 30: A Palestinian report says more than half of the children in the Gaza Strip suffer from malnutrition due to the ongoing Israeli siege of the impoverished region.

The Palestinian Medical Relief Association conducted the study on the situation of children in Gaza, saying that 52 percent of the young Palestinians suffer from malnutrition, and severe vitamin deficiency.

According to the study, a significant number of the children also suffer from infections in their respiratory systems, International Middle East Media Center reported.

Funds to 2,700 unaided madrassas

Patna, June 30: Ignoring alliance partner Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) strong reservation on promoting madrassas in Bihar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has decided to provide financial support to 2,700 unaided Islamic seminaries.

The 2,700 madrassas are affiliated to the Bihar State Madrasa Education Board but have not been getting any financial aid from the government till now.

Human Resource Development Principal Secretary Anjani Kumar Singh told IANS over telephone Wednesday that the state government has decided to provide financial aid to 2,700 madrassas.

Probe politically motivated, says Jaya

Chennai, June 30: Describing as “mischievous” and “politically motivated” the probe ordered by Tamil Nadu Government into the reported “unauthorised” construction of a tea factory, AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa today said it would fail like other cases against her.

In a statement here, Jayalalithaa denied there was any unauthorised construction and said only renovation of a 122- year-old dilapidated factory had been undertaken after taking permission of the officials.

The present condition of the factory posed danger to the lives of the workers, she said.

Cop shoots himself to death inside police station

New Delhi, June 30: A Sub-Inspector of Delhi Police today shot himself dead in a police station in the capital, police said.

The incident was reported from Kanjhawla police station and the victim has been identified as Rohtas, who hails from Haryana. He is in his forties.

Rohtas allegedly shot himself dead using the service revolver inside the police station premises, a senior police official said.

The reason for him taking the extreme step was not known immediately.

He was an ex-serviceman and inducted into Delhi Police as a Sub-Inspector.

Police lob teargas shells to quell protestors in Srinagar

Srinagar, June 30: Police today fired teargas shells to disperse stone-pelting mobs at a few places in Srinagar even as more violence-hit areas were brought under curfew in South Kashmir, where three youths have been killed in alleged CRPF firing.

Protestors, including women, took to the streets at Natipora and Batmaloo areas here and staged demonstrations against the killings that have rocked the valley for the past few days, police said.

Dikshit condemns rape of Brazilian woman

New Delhi, June 30: Condemning the rape of a Brazilian woman in the city, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today said police should step up efforts to ensure safety of the citizens, particularly women.

“This kind of incident should not happen…There should be a sense of safety and security for everybody, particularly women,” Dikshit said when asked about the incident.

A 27-year-old Brazilian woman, pursuing a Mass Communication course in Noida, was raped allegedly by her landlord in C R Park locality. Police have arrested the accused.

RAW, IB deny information in cases of sexual harassment

New Delhi, June 30: Country’s intelligence agencies, Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) and Intelligence Bureau (IB), have refused to make public information related to any in-house case of sexual harassment in the last 10 years.

Both the agencies cited provisions under the RTI Act which exempt them from disclosure of information, provided they are not related to allegations of human rights violation or corruption.

Airport body scanners ‘could cause cancer’

London, June 30: Airport body scanners have a potentially greater risk of cancer than previously thought, a scientist has warned.
The devices emit radiation up to 20 times more powerful than it was believed.

Dr David Brenner, head of the centre for radiological research at Columbia University in New York, said that the concentration of the radiation on skin could pose a greater risk of cancer than expected.
The risk is due to inability of a body to repair X-ray damage to its cells.

Taliban attacks NATO base in Afghanistan

Kabul, June 30: The Taliban has taken responsibility for an attack on a NATO airbase in which several militants were killed Wednesday.

The attack occurred at an airfield outside Jalalabad near the border with Pakistan, the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said in a statement.

ISAF and Afghan forces repelled a number of insurgents when they attacked the airfield.

The militants set off a car bomb and fired rocket-propelled grenades and small arms, the statement said.

Militants killed after Afghan airport bombing

Kabul, June 30: Eight militants were killed today in a gun battle after a suicide car bombing at the entrance to an Afghan airport, authorities said.

After the car bombing, a group of militants, using light weapons and rocket-propelled grenades, battled international forces for 30 minutes, according to information provided by the media office at the airport outside the eastern city of Jalalabad.

Congress not a factor in Bihar Assembly polls: JD(U)

New Delhi, June 30: Congress is “not a factor” in Assembly polls in Bihar as the situation in the state is vastly different from that in Uttar Pradesh, which had seen the revival of the ruling party at the Centre, JD(U) chief Sharad Yadav claimed today.

Yadav, who is also the NDA convenor, was upbeat over the prospects of the JD(U)-BJP alliance, which was shaken by the recent row between Bihar Chief Nitish Kumar and his Gujarat counterpart Narendra Modi over flood relief advertisements.

He said the RJD-LJP combine was its main rival in Bihar.
