‘Dead’ Taliban leader threatens revenge on internet

Islamabad, May 04: the leader of the Pakistani Taliban, Hakimullah Mehsud, reported killed in a CIA drone aircraft attack in January, has appeared alive in internet videos, threatening revenge suicide strikes in the United States.

Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), the Taliban Movement of Pakistan, has focused on fighting the Islamabad government and never yet proved capable of carrying out overseas operations.

Construction of security wall starts

Baghdad, May 04: Iraqi authorities have started the construction of a security wall around the capital Baghdad, reports the country’s Al-Iraqiya TV citing a Baghdad security spokesperson.

The concrete wall with eight checkpoints is to be completed in mid-2011.

It will be equipped with modern surveillance systems to ‘block terrorists and prevent them from getting into Baghdad’, Major General Qassim Atta was quoted as saying.

As soon as the construction is complete, the city’s authorities plan to remove checkpoints inside the city.

Lynn Redgrave dies

New York, May 04: Actress Lynn Redgrave has died at the age of 67 following a long battle with breast cancer, her family said in a statement on Monday. Redgrave, who was a member of Britain’s Redgrave acting dynasty, died peacefully at her home in Connecticut.

The London-born Redgrave received two Oscar nominations during her long career, for her role as an awkward teacher in the 1966 film Georgy Girl and also for the 1998 movie Gods and Monsters, in which she played a shocked housekeeper. She was married to actor-director John Clark from 1967 to 2000 and they had three children together.

‘All political parties sought term limitation regulation’

New Delhi, May 04: Sports Minister MS Gill today said the new regulation that seeks to limit the tenure of sports administrators has the backing of all political parties and is in fact a softer version of the original 1975 guideline.

Gill was rather taken aback by the reaction of the chiefs of various National Sports Federations (NSF) who vehemently opposed the regulation, questioning its timing since it came barely five months before the Commonwealth Games in the capital.

Scared of Salman, Vivek locks himself

Mumbai, May 04: The saga of Vivek Oberoi and Salman Khan might have been a thing of the past but the former is still scared to cross paths with Sallu.

Believe it or not but in a recent incident, Vivek Oberoi locked himself in his vanity van for as long as 75 minutes just to avoid coming face to face with Salman Khan. And the actor only emerged from his hiding place once Salman left the shooting venue.

170 striking motormen taken into custody

Mumbai, May 04: At least 170 striking motormen were taken into custody on Tuesday at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) here on charges of unlawful assembly and obstructing rail employees from reporting to their duties.

“About 170 motormen have been taken into custody for the offence of unlawful assembly. We have deployed adequate police force at all the stations in Western and Central Railway to avoid any violent situation,” Government Railway Police (GRP) Commissioner Tukaram Chavan told PTI.

The motormen taken into custody will be subsequently arrested, he said.

Though rumours of their affair have been providing all kinds of publicity to the film, the director has spoken up about it.

He states that the rumours about him dating Sonam are baseless. He clarifies that he is single at present and that the buzz about their relationship was all rubbish. However, he didn’t say anything more than that.

Even voting for himself or having friends who urged people to vote for him did not get Shah Rukh Khan a spot in Time Magazine’s list of the world’s most influential people.

The list, which was released by the magazine on April 29, has quite a few Indians on it, but not Shah Rukh. He had been one among the top 20 in the online voting, and had even tweeted about that, but since the list was released, Shah Rukh has not remarked on the disappointment.

Kabul, May 04: The trial of a former civil servant accused of carrying hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes from Saudi Arabia for a government minister in Afghanistan opened on Monday.

Mohammad Noor worked as an aide to a former minister for hajj and religious affairs who is charged with taking bribes from a foreign catering company during last year’s Hajj pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia.

Exercise early for stronger bones in old age

London, May 04: Exercises early on increase bone density and size, which may spell a reduced risk of osteoporosis later, says a study.

Around 3,200 men had their bones examined and their exercise habits mapped. Of these, just over 2,300 18-year-olds were selected at random to have their heel bone studied by the researchers.

The heel bone is particularly useful to study as it is directly impacted by exercise, being loaded with the full weight of the body.

• 2 cups Maida (Flour)
• ½ cup Mashed Banana(ripe)
• 3 tbsp of Ghee
• 1-2 tbsp of Milk

Procedure:
• Add the banana pulp with the maida, milk and add just little water to knead into a dough.

• Divide dough into 5 portions.
• Roll each portion into a thick chapatti with a rolling pin.

• Now lavishly spread ghee on the chapatti and cut into half inch broad long strip.
• Carefully pick up each strip and twist gently.

Maliki supporters disrupt poll recount

Baghdad, May 01: Iraqi election officials argued publicly with supporters of the Prime Minister who demanded a halt to a partial recount of votes just as the process got under way yesterday, a sign of tensions over the measure that could change the outcome of the closely fought contest.

The recount of 2.5 million votes cast on 7 March in Baghdad was ordered at the request of the Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, a Shia, who narrowly lost to the former Prime Minister Ayad Allawi, who has heavy Sunni support.

SP leader arrested for involvement in arson

Auraiya (UP), May 04: A Samajwadi Party leader has been arrested for his alleged involvement in arson during nation-wide bandh organised by 13 political parties to protest against price rise, officials said here today.

Pramod Gupta, Chairman of Vidhuna Nagar Panchayat, was arrested from his house late last night in connection with arson during Bharat bandh on April 27 in which a bus was torched by mob, they said.

Killed scribe’s mother tightlipped during questioning

Ranchi, May 04: Sudha Pathak, arrested for alleged involvement in the murder of her journalist daughter Nirupama, has been tightlipped during interrogation but seems to know a lot, police in Jharkhand said Tuesday.

Pathak was arrested Monday; her husband and sons were also quizzed about what some believe could be a case of “honour killing”.

“She is not revealing anything but it seems that she knows much about the murder,” Superintendent of Police (Koderma) G. Kranti Kumar told IANS.

US has 5,113 nuke warheads: Pentagon

Washington, May 04: The United States has a total of 5,113 nuclear warheads in its stockpile as of September 30, 2009, the Pentagon has revealed, following which Congressmen sought similar move from India, Pakistan, China and Russia.

The newly declassified information was released as part of America’s effort to increase the transparency of global nuclear stockpiles — a step which it thinks is important to nonproliferation efforts.

Rain, hailstorms cause chaos in Riyadh

Riyadh, May 04: Flooding killed over 120 people in Saudi Arabia last year.
Heavy rain and hailstorms have struck Riyadh, causing traffic jams, accidents, and school closures.

There were no official reports of injuries after Monday’s meteorological surprise caused the flooding of some of the main roads of the Saudi capital, reported, citing witness accounts, television broadcasts, and videos posted on the internet.

Gloomy forecasts have prompted the Riyadh region’s governor to order schools to remain closed on Tuesday.

Volcanic ash prompts Ireland to close its airports

Dublin, May 04: Ireland’s Aviation Authority said it was banning all flights in and out of Ireland this morning because of a renewed risk of volcanic ash drifting south from Iceland.

All flights to and from Irish airports will be prohibited from 7 am to 1 pm local time today, the authority said in a statement. The restrictions will not affect planes flying over Ireland from Britain and Europe.

“The decision is based on the safety risks to crews and passengers as a result of the drift south of the volcanic ash cloud caused by the northeasterly winds,” the statement said.
