Suspected militants kill three policemen in Lahore

Lahore, May 30: Suspected militants opened fire at a police picket killing three policemen in this eastern Pakistani city, officials said today.

A sub-inspector and two constables were killed instantly when two armed men riding motorcycles sprayed a volley of bullets at the picket in Samanabad area at around midnight.

The attack occurred a day after heavily-armed terrorists stormed two mosques of the minority Ahmedi sect, killing 95 people and injuring over 100.

Bones found after pond dries up; police probe underway

Etah, May 30: Human skulls and bones were found on the dry bed of a pond here, police said today.

Following this recovery on Saturday, an inquiry by police indicated that the bones were “very old” and could have been disposed into the pond by someone from a nearby mortuary which was set up in 1880, Senior Superintendent of Police R K Chaturvedi said.

About 8-10 human skulls and some bones were found lying on the bed of a dry pond.

Police said, the bones have been lying in the pond for a long time but were discovered only after the water body dried up this summer.

Two policemen injured rescuing ‘man-eaters’

Darbhanga (Bihar), May 30 (PTI) Two policemen were injured in a clash with mob after the men in uniform refused to hand over to them six people of a nomadic community who, according to the locals, were man-eaters.

The mob threw stones at the Mabubi police station where the six nomadic people were kept after being rescued by the police from a section of the people of Kothia and Makhnai villages, Sub-Divisional Officer Sanjay Singh said.

Two policemen were injured in the brick-batting following which the force used batons to disperse the mob, the SDO said.

Consensus on the merger issue eludes UDF meeting

Kochi, May 30: The crucial United Democratic Front meeting, convened to discuss merger of the two Kerala Congress factions led by K M Mani and P J Joseph, failed to arrive at any consensus with both Congress and Kerala Congress(M) not prepared for any compromise.

This was the first UDF meeting after merger of Kerala Congress factions, led by Mani and Joseph. While Mani faction is with the opposition UDF, Joseph’s party had been with the ruling Left Democratic Front.

Soren resigns after failing to cobble up majority

Ranchi, May 30: Three-time Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren resigned tonight after failing to get the support of Congress and its ally JVM(P) ahead of tomorrow’s trust vote in the assembly that may pave the way for a spell of President’s rule in the state.

The beleagured chief minister, who has only 25 MLAs behind him in the 82-member house, submitted the letter to Governor M O H Farooq shortly after 10 pm at Raj Bhavan. Soren needed to muster a strength of 42 to sail through the trust vote.

Delhi Police solve blind murder case

New Delhi, May 30: Claiming to have solved a blind murder case, police have arrested a person who had lodged a complaint in a murder case for allegedly sodomising and killing the victim.

Mukesh, a resident of Inderpuri in south-west Delhi, was arrested for the offence after he confessed his complicity during sustained interrogation, police alleged.

The accused allegedly had consensual sex with victim Ajay, a resident of same area, on the night of May 27 and it was agreed between them that the former would pay Rs 20 for the act, they said.

Now withdraw 1 lakh at ATMs, shop for 1.25 lakh a day

New Delhi, May 30: Bank customers can soon withdraw up to Rs one lakh in a single day from ATM machines, and can shop for even an higher amount of Rs 1.25 lakh with their debit cards.

Also, as much as Rs three lakh can be transferred in a day to another account through ATMs as also over phone.

Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II to skip CWG in Delhi

London, May 30: For the first time in 44 years, Queen Elizabeth II will miss the Commonwealth Games owing to “heavy workload”, leaving it to Prince Charles to represent the British Royal family in Delhi this October.

“Prince Charles will represent the Royal Family in India and a message of support from the Monarch to the athletes will be read out,” the ‘Daily Mail’ reported.

A spokesman for Buckingham Palace said the Queen had a packed schedule of appointments during autumn which did not include a visit to Delhi in October.

Soren’s fate uncertain before trust vote

Ranchi, May 30: The fate of the minority Shibu Soren government in Jharkhand remained uncertain on the eve of trust vote tomorrow with the Congress and its ally JVM(P) not spelling out their stand.

In a last ditch attempt, the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) today asked legislators to listen “to their inner voice” and vote for Soren to avoid President’s rule or mid-term polls.

Court official’s house burgled, room torched

New Delhi, May 30: Unidentified persons burgled the house of a senior court official in north-west Delhi and set a room on fire, a modus operandi similar to that of the ‘burgle and burn’ gang led by a teenager operating in the south Delhi.

The incident took place in the Bharat Nagar residence of Apa Toppo, the head of video conferencing in Teez Hazari courts complex, late last night. Topo and her husband Ashit were not at home when the burglary took place, a senior police official said.

It came to light when the couple returned home, found the door broke open and the house ransacked.

Two motorcyclists killed in road accident

New Delhi, May 30: Two men riding a motorbike today died in an accident here after being hit allegedly by a driven bus belonging to the Haryana Roadways.

Nitin, 26, who was riding the motorcycle and an unidentified pillion were declared dead at a hospital, police said.

The victims, who were going towards Ghaziabad, were hit from behind at Sarita Vihar around 1 pm today in south Delhi by the bus that was being driven in a rash manner, they said, adding its driver fled from the spot.

BJP issues whip on trust vote

Ranchi, May 30: BJP today issued a whip to its legislators to vote against the minority Shibu Soren government in Jharkhand on the trust vote tomorrow.

“The whip is issued to all our 18 legislators to vote against the trust vote,” BJP spokesman Sanjay Seth said.

BJP with 18 MLAs and JD(U) with two, had on May 24 withdrawn support to the Soren government, necessitating the floor test.

The trust vote will be taken at 11 am tomorrow.

Four trained teachers climb water tank to protest

Sangrur, May 30: Four activists of the Unemployed Elementary Trained Teachers’ Union agitating for appointment today kept the authorities here on tenterhooks as they climbed a water tank to press for their demand and refused to get down despite much pesuasion.

The protesting trained teachers climbed the water tank in the middle of a sit-in being staged by the union near the court complex here.

Soren seeks appointment with Governor

Ranchi, May 30: Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren tonight sought an appointment with Governor M O H Farooq, a day ahead of his floor test tomorrow.

“He has taken appointment at 10 pm”, the Principal Secretary to the Governor Sudhir Tripathy told PTI here.

BJP with 18 MLAs and JD(U) with two had withdrawn support to the Soren government on May 24 after the JMM chief had backed the UPA government by voting against cut motions sponsored by the opposition in the Lok Sabha.

Five of a family die in road accident in Chittoor

Hyderabad, May 30: Five members of a family from Coimbatore, including two women, were killed and three others injured when the car carrying them dashed against a stationary vehicle after overturning in Chittoor district, police said. The incident occurred at Mamadugu village at midnight when the family was on its way back to Coimbatore, they said.

Israeli planes pound Gaza

Gaza City, May 30: Israeli warplanes launched a double air strike overnight on targets in the Gaza Strip after militants fired two rockets at the Jewish state, Palestinian and Israeli military officials said on Sunday.

No casualties were reported in Gaza or Israel. The Israeli aircraft twice struck a target in the area of
the disused and wrecked Gaza airport at Rafah in the south, bordering Egypt, a Palestinian medical source said.

Jnaneswari Express tragedy: 148 dead so far

Midnapore, May 30: The death toll in Jnaneswari Express derailment rose to 148 after some more bodies, trapped under the engine of the goods train which had rammed into the derailed coaches, were extricated by rescuers this morning.

West Midnapore district magistrate N S Nigam said search was continuing for 25 missing passengers after 13 coaches of the Mumbai-bound train went off the tracks and then were crushed by a goods train coming from the opposite direction.

Pakistani extremists joining Taliban, Al Qaeda: Rehman Malik

Lahore, May 30: Several banned extremist outfits in Pakistan have now become part of Taliban and Al Qaeda and are working together to destabilise the country, Pakistani Interior Minister Rehman Malik said Sunday.

Extremists belonging to outlawed outfits like Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, Jaish-e-Muhammad and Sipah-e-Sahaba received training in Pakistan’s northwestern Waziristan tribal region and have now formally joined Taliban and Al Qaeda, Malik said.

Times Square bomber got crash course in terror

New York, May 30: Pakistani-American Faisal Shahzad who tried to bomb Times Square had received a crash course in terror in Pakistan, said an official, adding: “He might have gotten some briefings, but not much”.

Shahzad, a naturalised US citizen of Pakistani origin, was arrested at John F. Kennedy International Airport while trying to board a flight to Dubai May 3, two days after he planted an explosive-laden vehicle in Manhattan’s Times Square. The bomb failed to detonate.

In Iran, action called on UAE claims

Tehran, May 30: A senior member of Iran’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission has called for decisive action against the UAE’s oft-repeated claims to three Iranian Persian Gulf islands.

Spokesman for the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Kazem Jalali criticized the country’s foreign ministry on Sunday for what he described as a lack of action against such blatant falsehoods.

“Raising issues such as claims to the Iranian islands in the Persian Gulf by certain Arab countries is undoubtedly a conspiracy,” Jalali told Mehr news agency.

Uruguay announces World Cup team

Montevideo, May 30: Uruguay Sunday announced final 23 members of their football World Cup squad travelling to South Africa in June.

Trainer Oscar Tabarez released the names after a friendly closed-door game between the national team and a selection of Uruguayan football professionals. The national team won 3-2.

Humans’ big brains linked to stem cells

London, May 30: Researchers say they have discovered a new type of stem cell in the human brain that might be responsible for big and complex brains in human beings.

Scientists say the newly-discovered stem cells, originally formed in an area of the brain known as the subventricular zone, will help make the neocortex, the outer layer of the brain, via producing more neurons.

Animals also have the stem cells but humans are likely to have more of the active ones, Livescience.com quoted Arnold Kriegstein, a researcher at the University of California as saying recently.

Israeli nuclear subs ‘to set sail for Iran’

Tehran, May 30: Amid speculations about Israel’s hostile future policies against Iran, a report says Israel is to deploy three submarines equipped with nuclear cruise missiles in the Persian Gulf.

Three German-made submarines belonging to Israel’s Flotilla 7 will be sent near the Iranian coastline, The Sunday Times reported.

The nuclear-armed vessels named Dolphin, Tekuma and Leviathan have previously been sent to the region but according to the British daily’s report, the Israeli Navy has fresh plans to keep at least one of the submarines in the region on a permanent basis.
