Sri Chaitanya boy surfaces in Gudivada

Hyderabad, november 02: The Intermediate second year student from Sri Chaitanya Junior college, who was allegedly kidnapped from the city a couple of days back, was reportedly traced in Gudivada in Krishna district on Sunday.

The ‘kidnapped’ 17-year-old boy, Hanupam Veer reportedly called up his family members in Tadepalligudem in West Godavari district informing them that the ‘abductors’ had released him in Gudivada.

BTech student jumps to death

Hyderabad, November 02: An engineering final year student, harassed by her husband and in-laws for dowry, jumped to death from the fourth floor of a building at Kukatpally on Sunday morning. The husband and in-laws were allegedly harassing the victim to sell a four-acre site that was on her name.

Mamata bid to woo Muslims

Kolkata, November 02: In an apparent bid to woo the minority population, Railways Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee today said she had supported the Vajpayee government “under compulsion” and had not “wasted time” to condemn the Babri mosque demolition.

“We (TC) had supported the Vajpayee government (in 1998 and 1999) under compulsion and never wasted time to condemn Babri Masjid demolition. Nor did we approve of Ram mandir in Ayodhya. We also protested the communal riots in Gujarat under (Chief Minister) Narendra Modi,” she told a gathering of Muslims.

Abducted doctors freed in Bihar

Samastipur/Begusarai (Bihar), November 02: Two doctors who were abducted from neighbouring Samastipur was freed today in Bihar’s Begusarai district.

Dr A K Sahay, Orthopaedic surgeon, and Dr Santosh Kumar Sahni, physician, were abducted yesterday, the police said.

The unknown abductors also stabbed and injured Dr Sahay who was admitted to a hospital, they said.

A group of three gunmen kidnapped Sahay and Sahni when they were on the way to Muzaffarpur on a motorcycle, Samastipur SP Ajitabh Kumar said.

Alampur temples to dazzle again soon

Hyderabad,November 02: The 1,400-year-old Navabrahma group of temples at Alampur in Mahaboobnagar district, which had been completely submerged for a full one week in the recent floods, are all set to regain their glory.

The temples, built by the Badami Chalukyas in the 6th century AD, had been under eight feet of water. “We deployed about 50 workers and spent Rs 2 lakh to clear 2 feet of mud and silt. Nearly 300 truckloads have been removed so far,’’ Conservation Assistant of ASI K Krishna Chaitanya told Express.

TTD officials put Board members in the dock

Tirupati, November 02: In an unprecedented move, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams’ (TTD) Vigilance Department has conducted raids on the camp offices of some of the temple’s Trust Board members following credible information that their personal assistants are selling darshan and seva tickets in the black market.

The raids, which have been going on for the past three days, were initiated after the receipt of written complaints from the public against the PAs of some TTD Board members.

Hyderabadis say boo to helmet rule

Hyderabad, November 02: Traffic police have registered hundreds of cases against citizens who are not wearing helmets while surveillance cameras have captured violators at various junctions. It has been found that more than 60 per cent of two-wheeler riders are not wearing helmets.

A Ravi Chander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Traffic, Hyderabad told Expresso that helmets are compulsory in the Twin Cities. Even as Traffic police are registering several cases on a daily basis, the nonchalant attitude of the public continues.

Raids continue at Jharkhand ex-CM’s properties

Ranchi, November 02: Income Tax raids on properties of Jharkhand’s former chief minister Madhu Koda in connection with alleged hawala transactions and illegal investments, continued for the third day today.

“Koda is at his residence here and raids and questioning are continuing,” a senior IT official told PTI.

He refused to comment whether Income Tax department would move Interpol to facilitate investigation into alleged hawala transactions in the wake of the department claiming of unearthing documents that suggested he had allegedly sent Rs 560 crore abroad.

SHGs selling superfine rice at Rs 20

Hyderabad, November 02: With supermarkets and even neighbourhood kirana shops selling rice at astronomical prices, it is the Self-Help Groups (SHGs), which are coming to the rescue of the common man. The SHGs are selling superfine rice at the rate Rs 20 per kilo.

As of now, 15 SHGs operating from different parts of the Twin Cities are selling rice at this rate since the last 15 days. Officials of the Civil Supplies Department supply 10 quintals of rice per day to each SHG. To the surprise the department, SHGs are not only providing the service but are also making good business.

Police unable to trace Maoist movements

After a long lull, they surfaced at once and shot dead four persons branding as informers in the forest region adjoining Khammam, Warangal and Karimnagar district borders in the recent times.

‘Witchcrafts’ killed in Jharkhand village

Chaibasa (Jharkhand), November 02: Three members of a tribal family were killed for allegedly practising witchcrafts in West Singhbhum district, making it the second such incident in the last four months.

The bodies of Gura Balmuchu (50) and his two wives — Nanika (45) and Radi Kui (40) — who were practising black magics, were found in their house at Padapahar village in a jungle, police said.

Four months ago, a woman and her two children were killed in similar circumstances and their bodies dumped in a well in the village.

No one was arrested in this connection, police said.

AI pilots threaten strike from Nov 24

Mumbai, November 02: Air India pilots today served the management a fresh ultimatum to sort out issues relating to salary and allowances in eight days, failing which they threatened to go on strike from November 24.

In a letter written to the NACIL Chairman and Managing Director Arvind Jadhav, the Indian Commercial Pilots Association (ICPA), said “if issues, including that of pending arrears, are not addressed by November 10, the letter be considered a strike notice.

Telanganites hoist black flags

Hyderabad, November 02: Several Telangana organisations, employees and students observed Andhra Pradesh State Formation Day celebrations as `Vidroha Dinam’ (betryal day) across the region today.

In response to a call given by the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), its party cadre hoisted black flags at all public places in the State capital.

However, they were soon removed by the police.

Party chief K Chandrasekhara Rao hoisted black flag at Telangana Bhavan.

TRS demands CBI probe into corruption in ‘Jalayagnam’

Hyderabad, November 02: TRS today demanded that the Andhra Pradesh government order a CBI probe into alleged corruption in the execution of ‘Jalayagnam’ (irrigation mission) programme.

“Congress MLC Muralidhar has made allegations of corruption against Major Irrigation Minister P Lakshmaiah in ‘Jalayagnam’. The government should order a CBI probe into that,” senior TRS leader B Vinod Kumar told reporters.

The TRS demand came in the wake of Muralidhar’s allegations against the minister.

Aussie oil spill hits Indonesia

Indonesia, November 02: A Huge oil spill off northwest Australia has hit Indonesia, killing fish and destroying livelihoods in poor villages along the Timor Sea, a non-governmental group says.

About 7000 fishermen in East Nusa Tenggara province have been affected by the spill from the Thai-operated West Atlas rig, which has dumped thousands of barrels of oil into the Timor Sea since August 21, the group said.

Islamabad, November 02: A Suicide bomber on a motorbike ripped through workers queuing for their salaries near a Pakistan hotel today, killing 20 people as the UN pulled expatriate staff from the northwest of the country.
The force of the explosion outside a bank near the four-star Shalimar Hotel in the garrison city of Rawalpindi showered the area with body parts.

“We were sitting on the second floor of our office. It was a huge blast,” Raja Sher Ali, a marketing manager in a local company, said.

Boy, 4, found dead in clothes dryer

California, November 02: A 14-year-old boy is suspected of killing his 4-year-old neighbour and placing the body in a clothes dryer.

Alex Christopher Mercado’s body was found in the dryer of his neighbour’s home in the Californian city of Mendota southwest of San Francisco, the Associated Press reports.

A teenage boy from the house was arrested on suspicion of killing Alex but has been named or charged.

Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims told The Fresno Bee that the boy had been killed before he had been placed in the dryer.

Cabbie watches dashboard TV, no fine

South Korea, November 02: A South Korean court has rejected an attempt to prosecute Seoul taxi drivers for one of their scariest habits – watching television while driving.

The Seoul Administrative Court ordered a district office in the capital to cancel a fine of 600,000 won ($560) imposed on a cabbie.

The city government last year passed a local ordinance banning the use of digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) systems while driving.
