PAC to verify audit paras on project works

Hyderabad,October 30: The first meeting of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has decided to verify all the audit paras relating to various works right from 1996.

PAC chairman Nagam Janardhan Reddy said that today’s was a preliminary meeting and the next meeting would be held on November 16 and 17.

The priorities of PAC would be decided at that meeting, he said.

He said the PAC would be activated and it would closely examine the money sanctioned under various heads to several works. The action taken reports (ATRs) would also be scrutinised by the PAC, Reddy said.

Narendra Modi down with swine flu, isolated for a week

Gandhinagar, October 30: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi is down with swine flu, doctors said Friday, two days after his return from Russia. He has been quarantined for a week, is on a liquid diet and those who
interacted with him recently have been advised medical caution.

The 60-year-old Modi’s sample was found positive at the government civil hospital in Ahmedabad, doctor Atul Patel said Friday morning.

Over half of Mumbaikars are migrants, Uttar Pradesh tops list

Mumbai, October 30: Over 50 percent of those ,living in Mumbai are migrants, the largest numbers coming from Uttar Pradesh, a report released by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) Friday said.

The report says that between 1991-2001, Mumbai’s population increased by 43.7 percent, all because of migration from all over India.

The 200-page ‘Human Development Report’ has analysed in detail the issues of poverty, education, health, sanitation, gender and other problems. It also confirmed that 50 percent of the city’s population lives in slums.

Rahul Gandhi addresses huge rally in Firozabad

Uttar Pradesh, October 30: A massive crowd waited patiently for over two hours to catch a glimpse of Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi who addressed a rally here Friday in support of party candidate and actor Raj Babbar for the Lok Sabha by-election.

Addressing a huge rally at the PD Degree College ground here, Rahul Gandhi said the Mayawati government had not utilised the funds provided by the central government properly. “Only a fraction of what was allocated was reaching the target,” he said.

The government is now pinning all its hopes on the report to be submitted by the Central team which visited the flood-affected areas and returned to Hyderabad today.

62-year-old woman found murdered in Delhi home

New Delhi, October 30: A 62-year-old woman was Friday evening found allegedly murdered in her Delhi home, police said.

The woman, identified as Virender Kaur, was found strangulated in her third-floor house in East Patel Nagar when her husband Amarjeet Singh returned home.

“The entry into the house seems to be friendly and nothing appears to be missing from the house. We have sent the body for post-mortem examination and are investigating,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Jaspal Singh.

Honduran Congress to decide on Zelaya’s reinstatement

Washington, October 30: The international community saluted Friday an agreement between ousted Honduran President Manuel Zelaya and de facto leader Roberto Micheletti to solve the political crisis in the Central American country.

The Organisation of American States announced late Thursday that an agreement has been reached, whereby the Honduran Congress is to decide whether Zelaya is reinstated as president, after being authorised to handle the matter by the Supreme Court.

BJP legislator acquitted in a Kandhamal riots case

Bhubaneswar, October 30: A fast track court in Orissa’s Kandhamal district Friday acquitted Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Manoj Pradhan due to lack of evidence in a case of arson during Kandhamal violence in 2008, an official said.

Udayagiri legislator Manoj Pradhan was accused of torching a house in Banjamaha village under Raikia police station area Oct 1, 2008.

Vani’s father hoped she’d be a lawyer

Hyderabad, October 30: She was just 15 and studying in Class X but her father had pitched his hopes on her. P Vijaya Vani from Saidabad, who hanged herself to death, allegedly due to ill-treatment by her school authorities, was good at academics and meant the world to her parents.

“Vani’s father had several dreams for his daughter. My brother (Kotesh) wanted to make her a lawyer and was certain that she would take care of the family even in his absence,” Vijaya Vani’s uncle Arun said.

Fire breaks out at Somajiguda

Hyderabad, October 30: A minor fire broke out in a scrap godown at Somajiguda on Thursday evening. The fire broke out in an abandoned house which is being used to store waste paper and used tyres at around 6.35 pm. Two fire tenders rushed to the spot and doused the flames immediately.

There was no loss of property or human life, officials said.

Prisoner’s bid to end life foiled

Hyderabad, October 30: A property offender, taken into custody by the police in a snatching case, set himself ablaze in an attempt to end his life in the Tukaram Gate police station on Thursday.

The offender, K Kanaka Raju (20), is a resident of Vaddera Basthi in Addagutta.

Kanaka Raju was nabbed by the Tukaram Gate police on Wednesday evening and was supposed to be produced before a court.

GHMC polls: Weapon holders to deposit arms

Hyderabad, October 30: In view of the forthcoming elections to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), the city police have asked the licensed arms holders to deposit their weapons and also prohibited processions and rallies in the city without prior permission. The elections are scheduled for November 23.

City Police Commissioner B Prasada Rao, in a notification issued on Thursday, asked all the arms licence holders to deposit their weapons with the police stations concerned or authorised arms dealers before Nov 11.

Govt following parameters laid down in 2006: A-G

Hyderabad, October 30: A division bench of the High Court today took on record the statement of Advocate-General DV Sitaram Murthy that the parameters laid down for identifying the creamy layer of Backward Classes through an order made by the government in 2006 was being implemented.

He made the statement on a writ petition filed by Prof Jayaprakash of the Osmania University challenging a recent government order keeping in abeyance the exercise of identifying the creamy layer among the Backward Classes in the State.

Salman snubs Asin

Mumbai, October 30:It seems to be the week of controversies. The latest buzz doing the rounds in B-Town is that Salman Khan recently ignored his co-star Asin in full public glare.

The story goes that the two stars were in for a media meet and Asin who wanted to meet Salman was openly ignored by the actor who even refused to acknowledge her presence.

Though Asin and Salman got along pretty well during the shoot of their film LONDON DREAMS, it seems Salman decided to keep a safe distance from Asin after rumours of the two getting close started doing the rounds.

Nalsar student ends life

Hyderabad, October 30: A final year law student at the prestigious NALSAR University at Shamirpet is believed to have committed suicide, allegedly unhappy with his performance in the recent semester examinations.

Police said the youngster’s body was found outside the campus and the injuries on the body suggested that he jumped to his death, possibly from the overhead tank abutting the campus compound wall. The student, D Venkat Ram Reddy (22), was pursuing his final year BA LLB (Hons). His father, DP Reddy, is a serving IAS officer in Chandigarh and the family hail from Kadapa district.

Man with knife held near Sabita ’s house

Hyderabad, October 30: A man wielding a knife who was passing by the residence of Home Minister P Sabita Indra Reddy at Srinagar Colony, set off panic among police officials on Thursday.

The person was caught near the barricaded road that leads to the Home Minister’s residence in Srinagar Colony.

Tenant can be evicted if property is sublet: SC

New Delhi, October 30: The Supreme Court has held that a tenant can be evicted if he or she sublets the premises to another person without the consent of the landlord.

A bench of Justices Tarun Chatterjee and R M Lodha said the tenant may carry out a partnership business but the same cannot be a camaflouge to conceal the illegal act of subletting.

Delhi Metro makes trial runs to all stations till Noida

New Delhi, October 30: The Delhi Metro Friday conducted successful trial runs of its service between Yamuna Bank station in the national capital and 10 newly-built stations across the river and Noida township in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh.

According to the Delhi Metro officials, the trials began around 2.30 p.m. and were conducted on the entire 13.1-km stretch. This section will be integrated with the existing 34.3 km Yamuna Bank-Dwarka Sector-9 section.

“This stretch would be open for public in December,” Delhi Metro spokesman Anuj Dayal said.
