Pak arrests 11 Indian fishermen from Arabian Sea

Ahmedabad, October 02: Pakistan Marine Security Agency (PMSA) has arrested eleven Indian fishermen and seized their boats from Arabian Sea along Jakhau coast of Gujarat, Porbandar Boat Association said Friday.

“Eleven Indian fishermen were arrested yesterday by PMSA while they were fishing in the Arabian sea near the International Marine Border,” Porbandar boat association secretary Manish Lodhari told reporters.

“We got the information from our counterparts in Karachi this morning after the fishermen reached there,” he said.

Lodhari said fishermen and two boats belong to Porbandar.

Brother-sister duo found dead, girl raped

Sitapur (UP), October 02: A brother-sister duo, aged 9 and 8 years respectively, were strangled to death after the girl was allegedly raped in Mahuwadana village, police said here.

Akash and the girl had gone out to play yesterday but did not return home till late in the evening following which the family members reported the matter to police, they said.

Their naked bodies were found late last night lying near a field, police said.

Superintendent of Police Ramkumar did not rule out the possibility of rape of the girl before both the children were strangulated.

SMS threat to kill Nitish Kumar

Patna, October 02: Suspected Maoists have sent SMS messages to several journalists threatening to kill Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar if two of their top leaders were not released from jail.

The threat was sent to about half-a-dozen journalists, a police official said.

The SMS was in chaste Hindi, said one of those who received it early Friday and informed the police.

Man beaten with shoes for raping 13-year-old

Lucknow, October 02: A rapist in an Uttar Pradesh village was punished in a strange way — the village heads asked the victim’s family to blacken his face and beat him with shoes till he faints or falls on the ground.

According to locals, the bizarre form of justice was delivered Thursday evening in Ghsainwalla village in Amroha, about 300 km from state capital Lucknow.

Sharif, 43, allegedly raped a 13-year-old girl residing in his neighbourhood Thursday morning. He was a resident of Peshthana area of Ghsainwalla village.

Investor wealth soars by Rs 4.33 lakh cr in September

Mumbai, October 02: September proved to be fruitful for investors as they grew wealthier by Rs 4.33 lakh crore in the period, with the benchmark index gaining over 10 percent.

The investor wealth, measured in terms of combined market capitalisation of all listed companies on the Bombay Stock Exchange, rose by Rs 4,33,651.31 crore in September to Rs 57,08,337.29 crore.

The cumulative market valuation was Rs 52,74,685.98 crore at the beginning of the month.

Detroit, October 02: US auto sales tumbled by 23 percent in September as showrooms emptied after the government-funded boom from the “cash for clunkers” program, with General Motors Co and Chrysler hardest-hit.

Sales for General Motors Co and Chrysler — the two US automakers struggling to regain momentum after emerging from bankruptcy — dropped by 45 percent and 42 percent, respectively.

Ford — the only US automaker to have avoided bankruptcy — managed to hold its sales decline to 5 percent from a year earlier despite low inventories and reduced incentives for car shoppers.

Don’t mistake revival as end of eco crisis: IMF to countries

New Delhi, October 02: The signs of revival in the global economy should not be confused with the financial crisis being over and the countries should be ready with policies to sustain the recovery, multilateral lending agency IMF has said.

“The current numbers should not fool governments into thinking that the crisis is over,” IMF Chief Economist Olivier Blanchard said while releasing the World Economic Outlook.

He also asked countries around the world to coordinate policies to achieve a global rebalancing and sustain the recovery.

Andhra to release 950 lifers on Gandhi Jayanti

Hyderabad, October 02: The Andhra Pradesh government Thursday ordered the release of 950 prisoners who are serving life imprisonment in various jails across the state.

State Home Minister P. Sabita Indra Reddy told reporters that the prisoners, whose prison terms were being shortened, would be released Friday on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti.

The state government had decided to release the prisoners on Independence Day (Aug 15) but a petitioner had challenged the move in the Supreme Court.

Educational institutions in Manipur shut for three weeks

Indian, Chinese stocks lag behind Brazil, Russia in Q3

New Delhi, October 02: Indian and Chinese stocks turned under performers in the third quarter of this year, compared with their BRIC counterparts, Brazil and Russia, which gave investors an average return of as much as 26 percent in the period.

According to an analysis of MSCI Barra indices, a measure of returns from various stock markets across the world for foreign investors, although performing better than China, Indian stocks have lagged behind Brazil and Russia in terms of quarterly returns.

Trade unions to oppose investment of PF funds in stock markets

New Delhi, October 02: Trade union representatives on Friday said they will strongly oppose the proposal allowing EPFO to park part of its fund in the capital market when the issue comes up for final decision at key advisory body Finance and Investment Committee next week.

“Investment in stock markets can be beneficial and at the same time involves risk of heavy losses also. This is a retirement fund. Who will compensate the subscribers for losses?” Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) President G Sanjeeva Reddy said.

India owes $82.5 billion to foreigners: RBI

New Delhi, October 02: India owed USD 82.5 billion to foreigners as on June-end this year, 39 percent higher than USD 59.4 billion three months back, in terms of the country’s assets and liabilities to the international community.

“Net claim of non-residents on India as reflected by the net IIP (international assets minus international liabilities) as at June-end 2009, increased by USD 23.1 billion to USD 82.5 billion from USD 59.4 billion as at March-end 2009,” RBI said.

Geneva, October 02: Iran has agreed to international inspections of a suspect atomic facility and to hold further talks about its nuclear activities during a full day of meetings with six world powers.

The announcements came alongside a direct meeting — the first of its kind in 30 years — between United States Under Secretary of State William Burns and his Iranian counterpart Saeed Jalili Thursday.

German defence satellite launched

Munich, October : The first of two planned satellites for Germany’s defence forces blasted off late Thursday from the European space launch centre outside Kourou, French Guiana, officials said.

The satellite separated from its rocket and was placed into orbit about 30 minutes after launch.

The satellites, both weighing 2.5 tonnes and code-named SatcomBw, will provide communications links to troops in Afghanistan and German Navy vessels in distant seas.

German defence forces already operate sensors from space that can peer through clouds and make radar images of the ground.

At India Infiltrator BSF Kills-Pakistan Border

Srinagar, October 02: Border Security Force (BSF) soldiers killed a suspected infiltrator along the international border in Jammu sector Ranbirsinghpora and Kashmir, an official said Friday.

The man died in a shootout between the troops of the FSF and suspected infiltrators near a Mangla in Ranbirsinghpora sector, some 30 km west of Jammu, on Thursday night.

“Our troops were fired upon from the other side (the border). Also retaliated. The fire left a dead infiltrator,” a BSF official IANS.
