New Delhi, September 04: In a strong indictment of the public distribution system, the Supreme Court on Friday said PDS was virtually non-existent in the country and even if they exist the same is being used for diverting the material into the black market.

“The PDS is not working in many states. There is no PDS at all. Not a single thing is available in the PDS. The same is being diverted to the black market,” a bench of Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan, Justices P Sathasivam and B S Chauhan observed.

Cuba, North Korea hold talks

The move was meant to satisfy demands by watchdog groups who have insisted on greater public transparency about the role of lobbyists in decision-making.

South Africa’s current account deficit decreases

Pretoria, September 04: South Africa’s current account deficit has decreased, BuaNews reported Friday quoting the South African Reserve Bank (SARB).

“The negative imbalance on the current account of the balance of payments improved from 7 percent of gross domestic product in the first quarter of 2009 to 3.2 percent in the second quarter,” said the Reserve Bank in its September quarterly bulletin.

The current account is the difference between a country’s imports and exports of goods. It also includes the payment of services and income received or paid to foreigners.

At 9.7 percent, US unemployment rate highest in 26 years

Washington, September 04:The US unemployment rate jumped to 9.7 percent in August, as employers slashed an additional 216,000 jobs, the Bureau of Labour Statistics reported Friday.

While employers cut fewer jobs in August than in July – when 276,000 jobs were lost – the unemployment rate soared to a 26-year high.

The rate is up from 9.4 percent in July. The number of unemployed people increased by 466,000 to 14.9 million, the government said.

Black box of YSR’s helicopter recovered

Hyderabad, September 04: The black box of the ill-fated Bell 430 helicopter that crashed killing Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy and four others has been recovered, officials said Friday.

The black box or cockpit voice recorder was recovered from Nallamalla forests in Kurnool district, where the helicopter crashed Wednesday.

The anti-Maoist Greyhounds force, which found the black box during search operations in the area, handed it over to a team of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) which began a probe into the crash.

New Delhi, September 04: Jamia Milia Islamia’s new vice chancellor Najeeb Jung Friday said he would work towards getting better infrastructure for the university instead of focusing on incidents like the Batla House shootout here last year, in which a police inspector and two suspected Islamist militants were killed.

Teenager stripped, assaulted during ragging at Delhi institute

New Delhi, September 04: Five students of a technical institute in east Delhi were arrested Friday for allegedly making a junior strip and dance as part of ragging and later severely assaulting him, police said.

“The incident took place at an Industrial Training Institute in Vivek Vihar area (in east Delhi) Wednesday when nearly 10 seniors caught the 17-year-old victim. They took him to a hall where they asked him to sing a song. But when he refused, he was forced to strip and dance naked,” a senior police officer said.

Mayawati inaugurates new building of Lucknow Jail

Lucknow, September 04: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati Friday inaugurated the new building of Lucknow Jail, located on the outskirts of the city, that has the capacity to house more than 3,500 prisoners and is equipped with high-class security.

The chief minister inaugurated the new jail from the confines of her heavily guarded official residence here.

Moulana Naseeruddin granted bail

Hyderabad, September 04: The Supreme Court Of India today Granted the conditional bail to the Muslim cleric Moulana MOhammed Naseeruddin who has been languishing in the Sabarmati jail for more than five years.

He was arrested by the Detection Crime Branch of Ahmedabad Police on 30 November 2004 in connection with the former Gujarat Home Minister Haren Pandya murder case conspiracy and during this incident one youth Mujahid Saleem was killed by the Gujarat police near the DGP’s office.

India’s swine flu deaths jump to 116

New Delhi, September 04: Five people died of swine flu in India Friday, taking the toll due to influenza A (H1N1) virus to 116, health authorities said here.

While four deaths were reported from Bangalore, Karnataka, one person died in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

Also during the day, 124 fresh cases were reported in the country, taking the total number of affected people to 4,488.

According to health authorities in Karnataka, the four deaths have taken the toll due to the H1N1 virus to 35 in the state.
