Manager held for accidental death of man in theatre

Chennai, June 15: Police on Saturday arrested the manager of the cinema hall where a 40-year-old man died last week when he tripped and fell on an iron
rod protruding from the seat. He has been booked for negligence. Hunt is also on for the owner of the theatre who is said to be in Singapore.

The identify of the man, who died in the theatre last Thursday, is yet to be established. “We have printed pamphlets with the victim’s photograph and circulated them in the Kothavalchavadi area to trace his identity,” inspector G Hari Kumar of Kothavalchavadi police station told The Times Of India.

Anchorage, June 14: Alaska’s Rat Island is finally rat-free, 229 years after a Japanese shipwreck spilled rampaging rodents onto the remote Aleutian island, decimating the local bird population.

After dropping poison onto the island from helicopter-hoisted buckets for a week and a half last autumn, there are no signs of living rats and some birds have returned, according to the US Fish and Wildlife Service.

Moscow, June 14: A volcanic eruption on a remote Russian island north of Japan has created a giant ash cloud that threatens passing airplanes, the RIA-Novosti news agency reported on Sunday, citing Russian geologists.

The eruption of Sarychev Peak on uninhabited Matua Island, part of the Kuril Islands archipelago in the north Pacific Ocean, began overnight between Thursday and Friday and is still underway, the news agency said.

Kusum Kumari (38) attached to Charminar police here was found dead in her house at Kukatpally area here this morning with blunt injuries on her face even as her husband Bikshapati, an autodriver who is suspected to have “killed” her is absconding after the incident, Kukatpally police said.

Biden still eyeing WH

Washington, June 14: US Vice-President Joe Biden isn’t ruling out his own presidential aspirations.

The two-time presidential candidate says the current line-up is the right one, with Biden as President Barack Obama’s No. 2. The Vice-President says he is a close adviser to Obama and is satisfied with his role in the administration.

For instance, Biden says, he reacted to Supreme Court nominees as a veteran Senator. Now, he gets to help pick them.

But he says he still has his eye on the Oval Office.

Hostage-takers get €10m

Helsinki, June 14: The daughter of a Finnish industrialist was released this weekend following a two-and-a-half-week kidnapping ordeal after payment of a €10m ransom, police reported on Sunday.

Minna Nurminen, 26, was released in a forest near the city of Turku on Saturday after the ransom’s payment. Police said she was in good health. She had been reported missing May 27.

She is a daughter of Hanna Nurminen, an heir to the Herlin family and owner of elevator manufacturer Kone. The mother is considered to be Finland’s richest woman.

Al Qaeda financier held in Yemen

Yemen, June 14: Yemeni police have detained a Saudi man suspected to be the main financier of Al Qaeda operations in Yemen and neighbouring Saudi Arabia, the defence ministry said Sunday.

It said in a statement posted on its website that the suspect, identified as Hassan Hussein bin Alwan, was ‘the financier of the operations carried out by members of Al Qaeda in Yemen and Saudi Arabia’.

It further described him as ‘one of the most dangerous Al Qaeda terrorists’. The statement gave no further details on the suspect or location of the arrest.
