Hyderabad, June 24: The positive aspects in Congress policies and the negative conditions in the Grand Alliance influenced the voters in the State.

This was the outcome of the CPI State council meetings.

Briefing the media on the council meetings, CPI state secretary K Narayana said that the positive aspects in Congress Government’s policies such as pension scheme, National Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) influenced the voters much.

Washington subway collision: Toll up to 9

Washington, June 24: The death toll from a collision between two subway trains in the US capital Monday has risen to nine, broadcaster CNN reported Tuesday.

At least 76 people were injured in the accident that has been described as the deadliest in the Washington Metrorail system’s 33-year history.

A train that had apparently stopped between stations was struck from behind by a second train at about 5 p.m. (2100 GMT), just inside Washington, near the Maryland state line.

“The scene is as horrific as you can imagine,” Washington Mayor Adrian Fenty said.

AP government orders probe into Chamundi affair

Hyderabad, June 24: Based on a complaint received from women cricketers, Home Minister P Sabitha Indra Reddy on Tuesday directed DGP SSP Yadav to constitute an inquiry committee headed by a senior IPS officer to probe into alleged ‘highhanded and objectionable’ behaviour of suspended Andhra Cricket Association secretary V Chamunmdeswarinath. It is learnt that Additional DGP (Recruitment) M Ratan will be heading the probe panel. The Minister held oneon- one’s with each of the women cricketers (victims) before ordering the inquiry.

YSR wants a slum-free Hyderabad

Hyderabad, June 24: Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy on Tuesday asked the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to speed up slum development programmes and the Weaker Section Housing project. He expressed concern over conditions in many slums in and around the city. The Chief Minister wanted a special cell to be set up by the HMWS&SB to ensure good quality drinking water. The water quality should be checked constantly and Bholakpur incident should be taken as a lesson, he said.

Oscar winning song writer accused of multiple rapes

New York, June 24: Joseph Brooks, who won an Oscar in 1978 for the song You Light Up, was arrested Tuesday and charged with sexually assaulting 11 women. According to Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau, Brooks, 71, used Craigslist and a talent web site to lure his victims by promising private auditions at his Manhattan apartment. Brooks pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Tuesday and was freed on bail of 500,000 dollars.

Pakistan not to hand over 26/11 suspects to India

Islamabad, June 24: Pakistan said today it would not hand over to India its citizens suspected of causing the 26/11 mayhem but would try them under its own laws.

“No Pakistani would be handed over to any other country including India,” Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Malik Amad Ahmed Khan said during the debate in the National Assembly, the lower house of parliament, on the budget for fiscal 2009-10, a news agency reported.

The decision was taken at a crucial meeting of Uttarakhand BJP MLAs in the national capital on Wednesday. One Candidate Withdraws Iran Election Complaints

Tehran, June 24: A losing candidate in Iran’s disputed presidential election formally withdrew complaints of vote rigging Wednesday, state television reported, opening a rift among those who had challenged the outcome even as other opponents called for continued protests.

Iran Mohsen Rezai, a former hardline commander of the Revolutionary Guards, had complained that he had evidence of 900,000 votes cast for him, while the official count was 680,000, less than two percent of the turnout in the official tally of 40 million.
