Have nuts ‘to cut heart disease risk’

London, June 26: A new study by Havard Medical School has revealed that eating nuts could cut women’s risk of developing heart disease particularly those suffering from diabetes — in fact, it can slash the risk by almost half.

“These data suggest frequent nut and peanut butter consumption is associated with a significantly lower CVD risk in women with Type 2 diabetes,” the authors of the study were quoted by ‘The Daily Telegraph’ as saying.

IIT-Patna to start PhD programmes from July

Patna, June 26: The newly set-up Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in this Bihar city will start its doctoral programmes from next month, an official said Friday.

“IIT-Patna will become the first among the eight new IITs set up last year to start PhD programmes,” institute official Subhash Pandey said.

The IIT will have PhD programmes in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Humanities and Social Sciences.

Pandey said that interviews of the applicants are underway and there are 30 vacancies.

Solar plane to soon fly around the world

London, June 26: Bertrand Picard, a Swiss adventurer is all set to unveil a prototype of a solar-powered plane he hopes eventually to fly around the world.

According to a report by BBC News, the initial version of the solar plane, spanning 61m but weighing just 1,500kg, will undergo trials to prove it can fly at night.

Picard, who made history by circling the globe non-stop in a balloon in 1999, said he wants to demonstrate the potential of renewable energies.

Picard’s Solar Impulse team has invested tremendous energy in trying to find what they believe is a breakthrough design.

China accuses Google of spreading pornography

Beijing, June 26: China’s government accused Google Inc. of spreading pornography after Chinese Internet users were temporarily unable to gain access to the U.S. search giant’s main Web site or China-based service.

“We have found that the English version of google.com has spread lots of pornographic, lewd and vulgar content, which is in serious violation of Chinese laws and regulations,” said foreign ministry spokesman Qin Gang.

He said authorities “summoned representatives of Google.com in China and urged them to remove the content immediately.

Surat gang rape accused slapped on way to court

Surat, June 26: Shahid Saiyad, who has been accused of raping a teenager with two other men here, was slapped by a youth while he was on his way to a local court Friday, police said.

“The youth who slapped Saiyad has been detained and is being questioned,” a police officer with the Surat Crime Branch said.

“It was only one person who slapped one of the accused. There was no mob involved,” the officer added.

Indian-origin woman is US special envoy to Muslim world

Washington, June 26: The United States has appointed Farah Pandith, a Kashmiri-origin Indian woman, to reach out to the Muslim world, providing momentum to President Barack Obama’s efforts for a “new beginning” with the community.

Pandith’s appointment was made early this week but the State Department communications staff failed to make the key nomination public.

State Department spokesman Ian Kelly told reporters that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton appointed Pandith, a Muslim, as a Special Representative to Islamic communities two days ago.

Ahmadinejad asks Obama not to interfere in Iran

Tehran, June 26: President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called on Barack Obama not to interfere in Iran’s internal affairs after the US president said he was “appalled and outraged” by post-election violence.

Iran’s tough security crackdown after its disputed June 12 presidential election has led Obama to ramp up his previously muted criticism of the Islamic Republic.

Deputy Tahsildar in ACB net for bribe

Hyderabad, June 26: Kalidindi Mandal Deputy Tahsildar Shaik Latheef Pasha was trapped by the ACB officials at his office today when he accepted Rs 5,000 as bribe from a complainant for doing an official favour.

The amount and connected file was seized from the accused, who was arrested.

The accused will be produced before the Special Judge for SPE and ACB cases Vijayawada, a press release here said.

Four men burn woman for protesting eve teasing

Chhatarpur, June 26: In a bloodcurdling incident, four miscreants set a young woman on fire at her house after being annoyed by her protest for eve-teasing at Kotwali thana area here this morning, police said.

City Police Superintendent of Police Sameer Yadav said that Rakesh Kori, Brajesh Kori, Siaram and Nisar Mohammad stormed into the house of Ruksana (18) when she was alone, poured kerosene over her and set her ablaze.

The miscreants soon fled from the spot.

On getting information, police admitted the victim, who sustained 80 per cent burn injuries, to the district hospital.

Maoists trigger landmine, fire at forces in Lalgarh

Lalgarh, June 26: Maoist rebels fired at security personnel and triggered landmines in jungles as troopers advanced to reclaim new areas and flush out far-left radicals from West Midnapore district in West Bengal, officials said today.

A joint team of central paramilitary troopers and state armed policemen set out from their camp in Goaltore bordering Bankura district today morning to retake some strategic pockets still held by the ultras but met with resistance at a forested stretch in Pingboni after a 1 km march, an official said.

Cong’s Greater Hyderabad meet postponed
