Canadian woman molested on train, accused arrested

Kanpur, June 11: A rape bid was made on a 25-year-old woman of Canadian origin allegedly by a hawildar of 14 Rajputana Rifles here on Wednesday. The
victim and the accused both were travelling on Guwahati-New Delhi Sampark Kranti Express.

While the victim along with her husband was coming from New Jalpaigudi in West Bengal, the accused was coming from Assam. The incident, occurred at around 10.45 am when the train was passing through Bihar, came to light after it reached the Kanpur Central railway station at around 8 pm.

Ex-serviceman arrested for raping daughter

New Delhi, June 11: A 40-year-old ex-servicemen was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly raping his teenaged daughter in Sultanpuri area of outer Delhi. Police said the accused had repeatedly raped his 16-year-old daughter over the last two-and-a-half months.

The girl, a class XI student at a government college in the area, narrated the incident to her mother after which her mother took her to the police station and lodged a complaint.

Airport tanker on fire, close shave for 268

Kolkata, June 11: Two hundred and sixty-eight passengers on board a Singapore Airlines flight had a narrow escape at Kolkata airport late Wednesday night when a tanker caught fire seconds before it was to start refuelling the plane.

Thanks to a quick-thinking Indian Oil driver, who put his life at risk, no one was hurt.

Judicial remand of Raju, others extended till June 24

Hyderabad, June 11: The judicial remand of former Satyam Computer Chairman B Ramalinga Raju has been extended for another two weeks in the multi-crore accounting fraud at the IT company.

The XIV Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate extended the judicial remand of Raju by 14 days till June 24, after their remand ended on Wednesday.

The remand of Satyam’s former MD Rama Raju and ex CFO V Srinivas, former auditors of Price Waterhouse S Gopalakrishnan and T Srinivas and three former Satyam employees has also been extended till June 24.

Britney Spears dating her agent?

Mirror.co.uk reports that the “Toxic” singer, currently in Britain on her “Circus” tour, was visited by the media man here last weekend and love sparked between the two.

Friends of 27-year-old singer said even her dad Jamie approves of her choice and thinks Trawick apparently makes her very happy and is said to get on well with her two sons, Sean Preston, 3, and Jayden James, 2, by ex-husband Kevin Federline.

Israel fears Hezbollah may get US arms for Lebanon

Jerusalem, June 10 Israel fears that some US military aid to Lebanon may fall into the hands of Hezbollah, the Shia militia with which it fought a war three years ago, Defence Minister Ehud Barak said on Wednesday.

‘When it comes to Lebanon… we have not much appreciated the delivery of American arms these past months,’ Barak told public radio. ‘We fear that a part of this materiel falls into the hands of Hezbollah.’

Barak’s comments came after a pro-Western coalition defeated a Hezbollah-led alliance in a parliamentary election in neighbouring Lebanon on Sunday.

Prabhakaran was tortured before being killed, says report

New Delhi, June 10: Tamil Tigers leader Velupillai Prabhakaran was tortured by the Sri Lankan military before being killed, a leading human rights body said in a report released Wednesday.

The University Teachers for Human Rights (UTHR) quoted high-level military sources as saying that Prabhakaran was tortured in the presence of ‘a Tamil government politician and a general’.

The torture, it said, took place probably at the headquarters of the army’s 53 Division, which battled the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) before crushing it last month.

YSR wants private schools’ fee structure monitored

Death toll in Pakistan hotel blast rises to 16

Islamabad, June 10: The death toll from a suicide car bombing at a luxury hotel in Pakistan’s northwestern city of Peshawar rose Wednesday to 16, which included two foreign UN officials and a Spanish national, while up to 60 people were injured, a police official said.

Three suicide attackers in a pickup truck entered the Pearl Continental Hotel late Tuesday after shooting the security guards and rammed the explosives-laden vehicle into its main building.

32 killed in Iraq car bomb blast

Baghdad, June 10: At least 32 people were killed and 47 injured when a car bomb exploded at a market in the southern Iraqi city of Nasriya Wednesday, a security official said.

The explosion took place in al-Bathaa market in the north of the city during a busy morning.

The injured were transferred to a nearby hospital. Many of the city’s residents remained indoors following the attack.

Nasriya, the capital of the relatively peaceful province of Dhi Kar, is situated some 375 km south of Baghdad.

contemplating to quit Telugu Desam and join Congress.

The rumour spread like wild fire as Prasanna Kumar distributed a letter which he said he had written to party president N Chandrababu Naidu. In the letter, Reddy has advised Naidu to be wary of `chamchas’ and `buffoons’ who had “surrounded him and giving wrong advice leading to hasty decisions on important issues.”

Protests continue in Shopian

Srinagar, June 10: Normal life remained paralysed in Shopian district of south Kashmir for the 11th day today in protest against the alleged rape and murder of two women of the town, but there were no incidents of violence reported.

All shops and business establishments, banks, government offices, educational institutions remained closed and all modes of transport remained off the road in Shopian, 52 kms from here, official sources said here.

Patients’ deaths lead to protests at Gandhi, NIMS

Hyderabad, June 10: Alleged negligence of doctors at two city hospitals led to the death of two patients sparking protests by the family members. In the first incident, an auto driver from Neredmet, who got admitted to the Gandhi General Hospital died of alleged negligence of the doctors. The auto driver, Krishna Murthy (35), fell off a bed in an inebriated condition late on Tuesday night. Krishna Murthy was shifted to the Gandhi Hospital where the doctors asked his wife, Susheela, to pay Rs 500 for a CT scan.

GHMC will complete regularisation in a month

Delhi: Nursing student commits suicide

New Delhi, June 10: A 22-year-old nursing student at a government medical college in the capital allegedly committed suicide in her hostel room on Wednesday.

Kaushika, who was studying at Lady Hardinge Medical College, was found hanging in her room, a police officer said.

“We received a call from the hospital that one of the rooms in the hostel is closed from inside. We broke open the door and found the girl hanging,” the officer said.

The reasons for the extreme step were not immediately known. Police have informed her parents in Panipat, Haryana.

RJD leader shot dead, mob violence in Patna

Patna, June 10: Senior RJD leader Pervez Alam was killed and his two brothers were critically wounded on Wednesday by unidentified men who fired at them near Digha area here, triggering protests by angry locals, police said.

The assailants fired at Alam, a contractor, and his two brothers at Banskothi locality this morning. Though the RJD leader was rushed to the Patna Medical College and Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries there.

Man held for allegedly raping teenage daughter

New Delhi, June 10: A man was arrested here after his 16-year-old daughter alleged that he had been raping her for two and half years at their northwest Delhi home, police said Wednesday.

The police said the victim’s mother took her to the Sultanpuri police station Wednesday afternoon and reported the matter.

After initial investigation, the police registered a case and took the victim to the Sanjay Gandhi hospital where doctors confirmed she had been raped. The man, a former soldier, was then arrested.

Ten-year girl identifies Kasab

Mumbai, June 10:A ten-year-old girl, rendered disabled during 26/11 terror strikes, today identified in court arrested gunman Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab as one of the two gunmen who had fired indiscriminately at passengers inside the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus.

Devika Rotawan, the youngest eyewitness to depose in the terror strikes trial, was asked by the court if she could identify the gunman among the three accused present in the dock.

All three accused, including Kasab stood in the dock, and the ten-year-old pointed at the Pakistani gunman. He, however, did not react.

BSE Sensex rises 2.25 pct to best close in 10 mths

Mumbai, June 10: The BSE Sensex rose 2.25 percent on Wednesday to its best close in 10 months, as markets across Asia and Europe were boosted by cash-flush investors buoyed by signs of revival in global economic growth.

Energy giant Reliance Industries and state-run explorer Oil and Natural Gas Corp were among the leading gainers as oil topped $71 a barrel, a day after settling above $70 for the first time in seven months.
