Ahmedabad,September 18:GUJARAT chief minister Narendra Modi may be talking peace nine years after the post- Godhra riots. But victims of the 2002 communal violence are clearly not impressed.

“ The sins of 2002 cannot be washed away with a fast,” says Amina Begum, sitting in her motley house behind Ahmedabad’s garbage dump. She lost her home at Guptanagar near Naroda Patiya.

“ We lost everything in the riots; our house was burnt,” she says.

New Delhi, September 14:An engineer from Hyderabad, who runs an education society, was arrested for allegedly raping and cheating a woman of Rs 2.5 lakh on the pretext of marrying her, police said today.

32-year-old Mohammad Sirajuddin Ahmed, who is also into organising cricket matches, landed into the trap laid by Delhi Police in the Andhra Pradesh capital last week and was arrested.

The chief minister, who has timed the fast in Ahmedabad with his 62nd birthday, declared it would be part of a “Sadbhavana Mission” that would continue even after the fast ends and “strengthen Gujarat’s environment of peace, unity and harmony”.

New Delhi,September 13 :The Jamia Millia Islamia has decided to file a case against a guest lecturer at the Centre for Management Studies (CMS) for alleged derogatory remarks during a lecture last Friday. Students have complained that the lecturer said a burqa did not suit a management student.

The university said the remarks were “communal”. Jamia Registrar S M Sajid said the guest lecturer had made some derogatory remarks about students wearing hijab. The students submitted an application to the Dean, demanding action against the lecturer.

Chennai,September 12 :Five persons were killed and 30 others injured when the trigger happy police opened fire on a stone-pelting mob at Paramakudi about 35 km from Ramanathapuram on Sunday.

Paramakudi town, which drew a large number of people, particularly Dalits, to pay homage to their leader Immanuel Sekaran on the occasion of his 54th death anniversary, turned into a battlefield between the agitators and the police personnel. Scores of policemen were injured and a number of government vehicles including a riot control vehicle and fire tenders torched down by the agitators.
