New Delhi, July 01: The Delhi government has decided against sending samples of H1N1 influenza cases to the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, as the institute takes up to 48 hours to report back.

Experts say test results should not take more than six hours. Officials say since suspected patients are kept in the same wards as patients confirmed with H1N1 flu, it increases chances of getting infected. Now, the government will send samples only to the Delhi-based National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD).

Cousin, call centre man held for bank exec’s kidnap

New Delhi, July 01: Two men, an exporter and a call centre employee, have been arrested on charges of abducting a manager of the HDFC Bank in Vasant Kunj, the police said on Tuesday.

Among the abductors is a distant cousin of the victim, identified as 25-year-old bank manager, Rahul Kumar. Officers said the ransom demand was for Rs 25 lakh.

Officers said both kidnappers, Rahul’s exporter cousin Naveen, 25, and his friend, the call centre employee, Kuldeep, 26, were heavily in debt and Rahul was their ticket to easy money.

Failed in SSC? Could get another chance soon

Pune, July 01: Those who have failed in two subjects in the SSC or HSC examinations this year may not lose the whole academic year. The government is keen on conducting early supplementary exams for Classes X and XII from this year itself.

“The government has conveyed its intent to the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) to conduct early supplementary exams from this year,” Education Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe- Patil told Newsline on Tuesday.

Sydney, June 30: Skim milk helps people feel full, thanks to its high protein content, lactose sugar and its thickness.

Researchers found that drinking fat free milk in the morning helped increase satiety and led to decreased calorie intake at the next meal, compared to a fruit drink. Those who drank milk ate about 50 fewer calories (or nearly nine percent less food) at lunch.

Washington, June 30: Elderly people who are active show better cerebral health than those who are inactive, says the latest study.

Researchers led by Elizabeth Bullitt, neurosurgeon at the University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Medicine, used non-invasive magnetic resonance (MR) angiography to examine brain blood vessels in the elderly, aged 60 to 80 years.

The subjects were equally divided into two groups. The high activity group reported participating in an aerobic activity for a minimum of 180 minutes per week for the past 10 consecutive years.

Four Hindi-speaking persons shot dead in Assam

Guwahati, June 30: At least four Hindi-speaking persons were shot dead and two others injured by outlawed National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) militants in Assam on Tuesday.

Heavily-armed NDFB ultras fired from AK-47 rifles on a group of people near Naharani tea estate at Rangapara in central Assam’s Sonitput district at 9.30 am killing the four, police said.

Besides the two women, a man and a boy of the same family were shot dead by the militants.

Four killed in Pakistan blast

Islamabad, June 30: At least four people were killed and three wounded Tuesday in a blast at a petrol pump in Pakistan’s southwestern Balochistan province, TV reports said.

According to Geo TV, the blast occurred in a car parked at a petrol pump in the Sorab area.

The police have cordoned off the area and begun an investigation.

US military says four soldiers killed in Baghdad

Baghdad, June 30: Four U.S. soldiers were killed in combat on the eve of the withdrawal of American troops from Baghdad and cities, the U.S. military said, as Iraqi forces on Tuesday assumed control for security in urban areas.

The U.S. military said the four soldiers served with the Multi-National Division-Baghdad but did not provide further details pending notification of their families. It said they died as a “result of combat related injuries.”

New timings in place, employees in govt depts report late for work

Ludhiana, June 30: As the Punjab government’s order of introducing early and reduced timings in its offices came into effect on Monday, several employees reported late to work on the first day of the changed schedule.

Many of the employees were seemingly happy and hailed the decision aimed at saving power, saying they would now be spending less time in the office and also the reduced working hours would be able to save energy for the government. Some, however, said it was difficult to start work so early in the day which generally follows a night interspersed with power cuts.

‘Natural gas find at Krishna Godavari basin can cross 20 tcf’

Gandhinagar, June 30: The Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation (GSPC) has found 10.8 tcf (trillion cubic feet) of natural gas in the Krishna Godavari (KG) basin off the Andhra Pradesh coast, as against the 20 tcf earlier announced by Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

Minister of State for Energy and Petrochemicals Saurabh Patel announced this during Question Hour in the state Assembly on Monday. He said the GSPC has successfully drilled 11 of the 15 wells in the KG basin, and the gas find could be over 20 tcf.

Unidentified car passengers harass women in Sola

Ahmedabad, June 30: Residents of Ajanta-Ellora Park Society in Sola have registered a complaint with the police that the women in the society are being harassed by some miscreants who deliberately pass by the area in a white coloured car. The police have now decided to deploy a patrolling van in the area from Monday night onwards.

Pune, June 30: With water supply badly hit because of delayed monsoons, the parched city is praying for rain, or even a water tanker. But this time around, even the water tankers, particularly those operated by private ones are being scarcely seen, even though people are ready to pay more.

The reason, many tanker operators say, is that Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has restricted tankers from getting water from their refilling stations, as water availability is poor. However, private water tankers having access to borewells are making a killing.

9-year-old girl with swine flu dies; UK toll rises to three

London, June 30: A nine-year-old girl, infected with swine flu, has died, taking the death toll due to the H1N1 virus influenza in the UK to three.

The girl, who was undergoing treatment at the Birmingham Children’s Hospital, died Friday, the hospital authorities said, adding she had already suffered from what was described as an “underlying health problem”.

Meanwhile, the Department of Health announced a big jump in the number of patients in England confirmed with swine flu – up 1,604 since Friday, taking the UK total so far to 5,937, the ‘Telegraph’ reported.

Booked for ‘rash driving’, accident victim dies

Chandigarh, June 30: Gagandeep (21), the accident victim who was allegedly dragged by a car driven by Sub-Inspector Jaspal Singh Bhullar on Saturday night, succumbed to his injures on Monday morning. He was admitted in PGI.

The only child of a poor farmer living a village in Moga, Gagandeep wanted to go to Canada for which he had completed all formalities. “He was waiting for the visa,” his father Balwinder Singh Dhaliwal said.

Top Manipuri actress arrested for terror links

Mumbai, June 30: Popular Manipuri actress Urikhinbam Devita was arrested by police on charges of terror links after she was caught from a hotel room in New Delhi with a top separatist leader, police said here Tuesday.

A police spokesperson said the award winning 24-year-old film star was arrested from Imphal airport Monday evening upon her return from New Delhi.

‘Devita was arrested and is being interrogated,’ the official said without elaborating on the nature of her crime.

Dilip Kumar recovering, docs suspect both malaria, dengue

Mumbai, June 30: Veteran actor Dilip Kumar, who was admitted to Lilavati Hospital with suspected malaria infection on Sunday morning, was said to be recovering on the second day of hospitalisation on Monday. The doctors, however, said that they now suspect a dual malaria-dengue infection.

Lucknow, June 30: For the second time, Chief Minister Mayawati has decided to virtually clip the wings of Rakesh Dhar Tripathi, Uttar Pradesh Higher Education Minister, by taking away his power to grant no-objection certificates for opening new degree colleges in the state as well for introducing new subjects in the colleges.

It may be remembered that in September 2008, Mayawati had taken a similar decision and formed a committee headed by Anil Kumar Mishra, cousin of Satish Chandra Mishra, to give NOCs.

U.N. to discuss Honduras coup as rival presidents seek power

Tokyo, June 29: The president of the U.N. General Assembly scheduled a noon session Monday to discuss the situation in Honduras, following a military-led coup that ousted the sitting president.

Honduras President Jose Manuel Zelaya was detained and sent to Costa Rica, the government said.

Tehran, June 29: No Iranian presidential candidates had filed complaints as a Monday deadline approached in the country’s disputed presidential election, state-run Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting reported.

The powerful conservative Guardian Council last week extended the deadline for filing complaints after two candidates — Mir Hossein Moussavi and Mehdi Karrubi — questioned the legitimacy of the June 12 vote count.

Mortar hits Pak mosque killing 3 tribesmen

Islamabad, June 29: Pakistani fighter jets bombed suspected Taliban hideouts on Monday and a stray mortar crashed into a mosque during prayers as violence in the volatile northwest on claimed more than 20 lives.

The air strikes hit a guest house being used by militants in the village of Kani Guram, in South Waziristan, where government forces are readying an offensive against Pakistani Taliban leader Baitullah Mehsud. Four militants were killed, three intelligence officials said.

Bangladeshi woman whipped over 200 times, critical

Dhaka, June 29: A widow was whipped 202 times and a man 101 times following a fatwa by a religious leader for their alleged involvement in “anti-social activity” in a village in southeastern Bangladesh, prompting local protests and action by the police.

Piara Begum, a widow of 40, and Mamun Miah, 25, were whipped before hundreds of people at Khaiyar in Comilla district on Saturday night.

The woman fell unconscious and was rushed to hospital. Doctors said she was critically injured and needed to be given intensive treatment.

Chandigarh to become international gateway

Chandigarh, June 29: Travelling abroad from Punjab and Haryana will not mean travelling to Delhi anymore with Chandigarh airport being upgraded to an international airport. The first flight for Dubai will take off July end.

Sunil Dutt, director of Chandigarh airport, told “We have got confirmation from Fly Dubai. They have got permission from the union civil aviation ministry to fly a daily direct flight to Dubai from Chandigarh.”
