Mum’s Life Saved By 2 Years Old

London, July 15: A two-year-old tot saved her mum’s life after she learnt to dial emergency services from a television show ‘The Tweenies’ broadcast on the BBC.

Little Isabelle Keeling called 999 after her mum Joanne, from Bournemouth, Dorset, collapsed following an allergic response to latex.
The youngster gave out her name and address to the operator, and later went on to let paramedics into the house.

Sharif, Zardari Meeting, PML-N Rouled Out

Islamabad, July 15: The Pakistan Muslim League–Nawaz (PML-N) is not optimistic about any talks between party president Nawaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari in the near future.

Speculations about a thaw in the relationship between both leaders gained momentum when Zardari called Sharif recently.

In his telephonic conversation, Zardari reportedly thanked Sharif for his party’s unconditional support to the government on the issue of mass displacement of people due to the military offensive in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP).

Eight people get trapped in Parliament lift, rescued

New Delhi, July 15: Eight people today went through some tormenting moments when they got trapped in an elevator in Parliament House complex before being rescued after about one and a half hours.

Seven Rajya Sabha reporters and a liftman were going from ground floor to third floor in the elevator No 5 which got stuck between second and third floor at about 2.20 PM, sources said.

They made frantic calls for rescue and operations were launched immediately to bring them out.

India expects Pak to bring 26/11 perpetrators to justice

New Delhi, July 15: India expects Pakistan to bring to justice all perpetrators and conspirators of the 26/11 terror attack in Mumbai and uncover the entire conspiracy, the government said in the Lok Sabha today.

“We expect Pakistan to act on the information provided by us to uncover the entire conspiracy, and to bring all the perpetrators and conspirators of the heinous terrorist crime to justice,” Minister of State for External Affairs Preneet Kaur said during the Question Hour.

Over 5 lakh child labourers mainstreamed into education

New Delhi, July 15: About 5.21 lakh children have been “mainstreamed” into formal education system under a Government scheme for rehabilitation of child labourers, the Rajya Sabha was informed today.

The National Child Labour Projects scheme, which has brought them into the mainstream education system is in operation in 271 districts, Minister of State for Labour Harish Rawat said.

“About five lakh children have been enrolled in schools under the scheme after being rescued and 5.21 lakh have already been made part of the mainstream education system,” he said in a written reply.

Sebi was perplexed, but allowed trading in Satyam after fraud

New Delhi, July 15: Satyam founder B Ramalinga Raju’s communication about an accounting fraud left market regulator Sebi in a fix over halting trade in the stock, but it allowed the scrip to change hands although the US markets did not.

“At that time the issue was do you close the market or do you allow the market to operate?

“Now if there is somebody who knows about the confession (and) wants to buy (or sell) at price ‘X’, should we as a regulator be coming in the way?” C B Bhave, Chairman of Securities and Exchange Board of India, told PTI.

Mubarak Gul is advisor to J-K CM

Srinagar, July 15: Senior National Conference MLA Mubarak Gul today took over as advisor to Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah with the status of cabinet rank.

However, Gul would not draw any salary or remuneration for the assignment, an official spokesman said.

The Chief Minister himself accompanied Gul to his office in the secretariat and remained with him for a while.

Born on February 22, 1951 at Srinagar, Gul is a law graduate.

Orissa’s Dams and Rivers Cross its Water Limits

Bhubneshwar, July 15: The water level in almost all rivers and dams in Orissa has been increasing, thanks to the relentless rain since the last four days.

Major rivers of the state like Mahanadi, Brahmani, Bansadhara and Rushikulya are flowing above the danger mark at many places.

According to sources, nearly six-lakh cusec of floodwater was flowing in the Mahanadi River due to heavy rain in catchments areas.

Similarly, the water level in the reservoirs at Hirakud, Rengali, Balimela, Machkund and Upper Kolab are also increasing consistently.

Dehli Stock Exchange Teams Up With IBM

New Delhi, July 15: IBM today announced that it has signed a 10-year information technology (IT) services agreement with Delhi Stock Exchange, one of the leading stock exchanges in India.

As part of this Rs 11 crore agreement, IBM will provide business continuity and disaster recovery services to DSE as well as remotely host and manage its IT infrastructure.

Fake Currency Of Rs. 500 Displayed By BSP MP In Rajya Sabha

New Delhi, July 15: Bahujan Samaj Party member Brajesh Pathak created a scene in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday when he displayed a currency of Rs 500, which the MP claimed to be ‘fake.’

Pathak, who was participating in a debate on General Budget, tried to grab the attention of the members by displaying Rs 500 currency and claimed that he got the currency from an ATM in the Parliament Annexe.

P. J. Kurian who was, in the Chair of the presiding officer, asked Pathak to table the currency as there is no provisions to display any items in the rule.

Security stepped up in Mumbai after IB warning

Mumbai, July 15: Security has been stepped up across the financial capital and in neighbouring districts following Intelligence Bureau (IB) inputs warning of possible terror strike.

“We have increased our vigil at some banks in the city and also railway stations following the IB warning on July 8,” Maharashtra Minister of State for Home Naseem Khan told PTI here today.

Such warnings and inputs from the IB are received on a regular basis and accordingly security is beefed up at necessary locations, he said.

Sensex goes past 14,000-mark

Mumbai, July 15: A key index of the Indian equities markets went past the 14,000-mark today, the first time this week, as buying interest picked up, especially in realty stocks. It was ruling 232 points above its last closing figure, about 90 minutes before closing bell.

Around 2 p.m., the 30-scrip benchmark index of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), the Sensex, which opened higher at 13,917.27 points, was at 14,086.04 points — 232.34 points or 1.68 percent higher than Tuesday’s closing figure.

Chemical blast kills five, injures 100 in central China

Beijing, July 15: An explosion and fire killed at least five people, left two missing and injured more than 100 at a chemical plant in central China’s Henan province on Wednesday, state media said.

The blast ripped through the plant owned by the Luoran chemical dye company in Henan’s Luoyang city in the early hours of Wednesday, killing five night shift workers, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

Two other night shift workers remained missing, while more than 100 local residents were injured, most of them apparently suffering from smoke inhalation.

LeT trying to increase Indo-Pak tensions: UN

New York, July 15: Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) is still active and trying its best to increase the tension between India and Pakistan, a top UN official mandated to monitor the Security Council sanctions against al Qaida, Taliban and other terrorist groups said today.

LeT, which is responsible for holding a series of terrorist attacks in India including the Mumbai terror strikes, has been declared as a terrorist organization by the United Nations Security Council.

Foetus’ memory starts to function at 30 weeks, scientists find

Amsterdam, July 15: The short-term memory of a foetus begins functioning at 30 weeks, Dutch gynaecologists have found, according to a report Tuesday. Gynaecology Professor Jan Nijhuis and his team at the Maastricht Medical Centre teaching hospital used sound as well as touch stimulation on the unborn baby’s legs to discover when the human memory would begin to function.

They found that after a baby had heard a certain noise or felt a certain touch several times, it would recognize it the next time it happened.

London, July 15: Ricky Ponting’s rant about England’s alleged lack of respect for the spirit of the game rings hollow because Australia is the team which violates it most, said Ashes winning coach Duncan Fletcher.

Writing in The Guardian, the Zimbabwe-born Fletcher, who guided England to 2005 Ashes victory, said Ponting’s homily on spirit of the game was a manifestation of his frustration after Australia failed to separate the last English pair in the first Ashes Test and settled for a draw.

Hong Kong man, 81, begins jail term for attempted rape of maid

Hong Kong, July 15: An 81-year-old Hong Kong man has begun a two-year jail term for the attempted rape of his family’s maid, a news report said Wednesday. Wong Pak-sum, who was jailed after a High Court hearing on Tuesday, is believed to be the oldest man to be convicted of the offence in the former British colony.

He assaulted the 36-year-old maid after being left alone with her in the family’s flat in Hong Kong’s Tai Po district in October. Wong’s son and daughter-in-law live in the same flat.

‘Israel used reckless force in Gaza’

Jerusalem, July 15: The Israeli military used reckless force during the fighting in Gaza earlier this year, resulting in needless deaths and damage, a group of former Israeli soldiers charged in a report on Wednesday.

In testimonies collected by the organization Breaking the Silence, formed by Israeli army reservists, soldiers who participated in the Gaza fighting describe demolishing homes for no reason and using firepower beyond what was necessary given the relatively light resistance they encountered. None of the soldiers are identified.

Obama warned of ‘spectacular terror threat’

Washington, July 15: Top security officials in the United States and Britain fear a “spectacular” assault from terrorists linked to the al Qaida during the presidential transition in Washington, a news report said on Saturday.

US President-elect Barack Obama is being given ominous advice from leaders on both sides of the Atlantic to brace himself for an early assault from terrorists, The Times newspaper said.

The Bush Administration has been defined largely by the 9/11 attacks, which came within a year of his taking office.

US House lays groundwork for CIA probe

Washington, July 15: The CIA spent at least $1 million on the secret intelligence program that aimed to develop hit squads to kill al Qaida leaders but never went beyond the planning stage, a congressional official said on Tuesday.

The highly classified program, which never became operational but remained in existence until it was shut down by CIA Director Leon Panetta in June, is expected to trigger a congressional investigation, other officials said.

NASA plans sixth shuttle launch attempt

Nasa, July 15: The weather has been anything but cooperative for the launch of the space shuttle Endeavour, but NASA has promised a sixth attempt late Wednesday for the International Space Station mission.

The shuttle is now set to lift off at 6:03 pm (2203 GMT) on Wednesday from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral, Florida, with the US space agency saying there is only a 40 percent chance of unfavorable weather conditions this time.

Uproar in Lok Sabha over drought

New Delhi, July 15: Lok Sabha was adjourned for half-an-hour Wednesday following uproar that followed heated demands by MPs demanding a discussion on the drought situation in the country.

The issue was raised by Janata Dal-United (JD-U) leader Sharad Yadav soon after the house met at 11 a.m. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Left parties supported Yadav’s demand for a discussion, saying that the country was facing a severe drought condition.
