Aligarh, July 18: A team of Aligarh Muslim University officials led by Vice Chancellor P K Abdul Azis today visited Murshidabad in West Bengal for on the spot assessment of the 350 acres of land donated by the state government for the proposed off-campus of the university.

Kambli and Tendulkar come face-to-face

Nagpur, July 18: Barely five days after his remarks against Sachin Tendulkar created a controversy, former Indian player Vinod Kambli today came face-to-face with his celebrated childhood friend at a public function here.

Tendulkar and Kambli made their first joint appearance at a felicitation programme where their coach Ramakant Achrekar was also honoured.

At the event, titled “Gaurav Guru Shishyancha” (in honour of the coach and his pupil), the two childhood friends were seated on either side of Achrekar and were seen talking to each other.

Pinki to smile again, to be given free education

Lucknow, July 18: Eight-year-old Pinki Sonkar, the protagonist of the ‘Smile Pinki’ documentary that won an Oscar, has just got another reason to smile with the Lucknow Public Schools and Colleges (LPSC) authorities deciding to provide free education to her.

The LPSC made the announcement after a section of media reported that the little waif still washes utensils in her village in Mirzapur, in order to meet the expenses of her family.

Ascetic arrested with bombs in Jharkhand

Ranchi, July 18: A Hindu ascetic has been arrested after six bombs were found in his possession in Deoghar district of Jharkhand Saturday, police said.

According to police, the bombs were recovered from the sadhu’s house, situated at Hirna colony of Deoghar district, around 400 km from Ranchi, early Saturday morning.

On a tip-off, police raided the house and found the bombs. Police are trying to ascertain the reason for keeping the bombs.

Terrorist nabbed in Dhaka linked to attacks in India

Dhaka, July 18: Bangladesh authorities claim that an Indian militant arrested here has been living in the country since 1995 and has links with Pakistan-based terrorist groups as well as underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, media reports said Saturday.

Mufti Obaidullah, who was paraded before the media Friday, was described by Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner A.K.M. Shahidul Hoque as ‘one of the most wanted Indian terrorists’.

A total eclipse occurs when the Sun is completely obscured by the Moon. The intensely bright disk of the Sun is replaced by the dark silhouette of the Moon, SPACE President C B Devgun said.

Endevaour astronauts prepare for first spacewalk

Washington, July 18: Astronauts from the US space shuttle Endeavour prepared for their first spacewalk of the mission on Saturday, aimed at completing a Japanese space laboratory at the International Space Station.

During their first full day in space, the Endeavour crew inspected the spacesuits that they will use in the five spacewalks planned during the mission.

The seven-person crew, including six Americans and one Canadian also tested rendezvous equipment, installed a camera for the orbiter docking system and extended the docking ring that sits on top of the system.

Pakistani jets kill 6 militants in northwest

Islamabad, July 18: Pakistani fighter jets flattened a suspected Taliban hide-out in the northwest early on Saturday, killing six associates of a top local Taliban leader, intelligence officials said.

Pakistan has targeted Baitullah Mehsud and his commanders in recent months in various tribal regions. Mehsud is accused of orchestrating the killing of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and launching a string of suicide attacks across the country.

Rita Bahugana Joshi granted interim bail

Lucknow, July 18: UP Congress Chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi was granted interim bail by a court in Moradabad on Saturday. Joshi was arrested after speaking against BSP supremo and state chief minister Mayawati.

The bail plea had been turned down by the Chief Judicial Magistrate on Thursday, who remanded Joshi to judicial custody for 14 days.

Bahuguna faces a string of charges, including making inflammatory speeches and using abusive language. She also faces charges under the prevention of atrocities Act.

Pak file 2nd chargesheet against 26/11 suspects

Islamabad, July 18: A second and supplementary chargesheet against five LeT operatives accused of involvement in the Mumbai attacks, including its operations chief Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, was Saturday filed before an anti-terror court in the garrison city of Rawalpindi by Pakistani investigators.

The investigators from the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), which probed the Mumbai attacks, submitted the chargesheet to the court, following which the judge adjourned till July 25 the trial, which is being held in-camera in the high-security Adiala Jail.

Silver surges on firm global cues, gold remains subdued

New Delhi, July 18: A divergent trend developed in the bullion market in the national capital today as silver prices surged by Rs 180 to Rs 22,200 per kg on emergence of buying by stockists while gold lost Rs 10 to end at Rs 14,990 per 10 grams due to selling by stockists.

Buying in silver picked up as stockists and jewellery makers indulged in enlarging their positions ahead of festival season and a firming global trend.

Reduced offtake at existing higher levels caused gold to trade in the negative zone.

Obama mulling overhauling system to interrogate terrorists

Washington, July 18: The Obama Administration is considering overhauling the system to interrogate terrorists by creating a small team of professionals drawn from across the government, a sharp contrast to the Bush era when the ‘high-value’ detainees were handled by the CIA only.

The new unit, comprising members of spy services and law-enforcement agencies, would be used for the so-called high-value detainees, ‘The Wall Street Journal’ reported Saturday.

Former teachers surrender in student rape case

Udaipur (Tripura), July 18: Two former lady teachers of a government school in South Tripura district, who had allegedly abetted the principal of the institute in raping a girl student have surrendered before the court, official sources said here today.

Mita Dutta, a former teacher of Kakrabon Navodaya School today surrendered before the district court and was sent to two months imprisonment in Udaipur jail, sources said.

The other teacher, Moutusi Deb surrendered in the same court on Thursday and was also sent to jail.

‘Ind can do more on climate change if funds given’

New Delhi, July 18: Noting that India has prepared an action plan and set up eight missions to fight climate change, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said the country is willing to do more if there are “credible arrangements” to provide more financial support and technology from developed nations.

Making a statement in Parliament, he said the problem of climate change cannot be addressed by “perpetuating the poverty” of developing countries.

Baby ‘dies of salt overdose’

London, July 18: A baby boy has died in hospital from a suspected salt overdose, it was revealed today.

The infant was born prematurely and had recently been placed on a saline drip but it apparently left him dehydrated.

He died on July 7, three days after the problem was spotted by staff at the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham.

A coroner’s investigation will now be held and there will be an inquest, Nottinghamshire Police said.

But detectives will not be carrying out their own inquiry into the death of the baby, who was born in March.

LeT Role In Mumbai Attacks Admited by Pakistan

New Delhi, July 18: A 36 page dossier handed over by Pakistan has for the first time admitted that Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) 2008 Mumbai attacks, according to Times Now.

The dossier terming Lashkar operations chief Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi as the mastermind and admitting the Pakistan nationality of Ajmal Amir Kasab along with some others is said to have prompted India to be more accommodating with Pakistan at the NAM summit in Sharm-el-Sheikh, Egypt.

Rita Bahuguna Joshi’s House Burning, MLA Of BSP Booked

Lucknow, July 18: Lucknow police on Saturday filed a case against Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA and a local party leader for their role in attacking Uttar Pradesh Congress unit chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi’’s house.

The names of BSP MLA Jitendra Singh and local party leader Imtizar Abdi have been added to the FIR filed in connection with the arson attack on Joshi’’s house.

The Congress had lodged a written complaint against the two BSP leaders for allegedly ransacking Joshi’’s residence here and setting it on fire on July 15.
