Don’t behave like ‘narad munis’, Goa speaker to media

Panaji, July 22: Goa assembly Speaker Pratapsing Rane Wednesday reprimanded the media for “misreporting” assembly proceedings and warned that he would complain to the Press Council of India (PCI) if “erroneous reporting” was repeated.

Rane said this after Congress legislator Agnelo Fernandes moved a privilege motion claiming that a regional vernacular daily and a national daily had misreported his assembly speech.

Supreme Court summons Musharraf on judges’ sacking

Islamabad, July 22: The noose seems to be tightening around former Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf with the Supreme Court Wednesday summoning him to defend his Nov 3, 2007 moves to impose emergency and sack the apex court judges.

A 14-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammed Chaudhry issued summons to Musharraf to appear in person or through his counsel on July 29 after the federal government refused to defend him in court.

“Determining responsibility for the steps taken on Nov 3, 2007 is necessary,” the chief justice observed before issuing summons.

Raveena Tandon excited about playing lawyer

New Delhi, July 22: National award winning actress Raveena Tandon, who essayed a variety of roles in movies in her nearly two decade-long Bollywood career, is excited about playing a lawyer for the first time in her forthcoming movie “Chassni”.

“It’s for the first time in 20 years that I’m getting to play a lawyer in a film and I’m excited because this is going to be my comeback film,” Raveena told IANS in an interview.

Girl falls into cauldron, dies

Ranchi, July 22: A seven-year-old girl was killed when she fell into a cauldron of hot food cooked for students in a Jharkhand school, an official said Wednesday.

Class I student Afsari Parveen was in a queue waiting for the midday meal to be served when someone pushed her from behind, an education department official said.

The incident took place Monday in Kolhaiya Kanadu village, about 45 km from Ranchi. The girl was taken to a hospital where she was declared dead.

Sensex falls below 15,000 in midsession trade

Mumbai, July 22: The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex, after rising nearly two per cent, fell by 1.03 per cent to dip below 15,000 at midsession today on heavy selling by funds amid a weak opening at European markets.

The Sensex, which had started with a hefty gain of 120 points, fell sharply to record a loss of 172.47 points at 14,889.02 at 1330 hrs.

Similarly, the wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty lost 59.15 points at 4,409.95. It touched the day’s high of 4,557.95.

Centre not helping Orissa counter Maoists: Patnaik

Bhuvneshwar, July 22: Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik Tuesday blamed the central government for not helping the state in countering the Maoists effectively.

‘There is not enough central assistance to counter the Naxalites (Maoists) in our state effectively,’ Patnaik said replying to an adjournment motion moved by the opposition in the state assembly on growing Maoist activities in the state.

New Delhi, July 22: Counterfeiting licensed software products of global giants Microsoft Corp and Adobe Systems proved costly for a businessman here as the Delhi High Court Tuesday asked him to pay Rs.1 million in compensation to the two firms.

Justice Manmohan Singh held Mahindra Saxena guilty of counterfeiting the products of the two global software giants that fought a seven-year legal battle to nail him.

First eclipse passenger flight a hit among passengers

New Delhi, July 22: For seventy-two passengers on board a special flight, the view of the solar eclipse could not have been closer as they watched the “mesmerising” celestial event at a height of 41,000 feet today.

The flight took off today at 4:57 am and came back at 8:10 am after intercepting the middle of the total eclipse shadow at 6:26 am for four minutes.

Divorce cases on rise in Bangalore

Highway blocked, thousands hit as heavy rains lash Chhattisgarh

Raipur, July 22: Traffic was blocked on the Kolkata-Mumbai National Highway-6 in Chhattisgarh early Wednesday and thousands of people of low-lying areas were hit as heavy rains continued to lash the state.

All the 18 districts of the state have been receiving heavy rain since Tuesday with low-lying areas and roads being inundated. About 30,000 people of state capital Raipur were hit as their houses were submerged.

The situation is likely to worsen with the meteorological department predicting more rains across Chhattisgarh.

Ruined Husain painting on Gandhi family to be restored

New Delhi, July 22: Four paintings done by renowned artist M F Husain on the Nehru-Gandhi family and India’s freedom struggle, which were ruined due to dust and rodents, are being given a new lease of life.

The paintings, some of which were displayed at the gallery of Rajiv Gandhi foundation, are now being restored to their past glory at the INTACH laboratory here.

Earlier, the INTACH had restored eight paintings, including one on Indira Gandhi’s assassination, done by Husain and sent to the Foundation, where it is displayed now.

Woman confesses to have killed husband at Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer, July 22: A woman here has confessed to have murdered her husband with the help of her lover and dumped his body in the nearby canal, police said today.

The woman Kelam alongwith her lover Chokharam killed her husband Gulabram some three months ago, they said.

Gulabram’s brother, Hemaram, had lodged an FIR with Jodhpur police station on July 10 saying that Gulabram was missing since April 29, and alleged that Kelam was staying with another person at Jaisalmer.

On this, police interrogated Kelam and Chokaram who confessed to have murdered Gulabram.

Computer programmer Anthony Wesley was doubly happy because the impact he photographed Sunday came on the 15th anniversary of the Shoemaker-Levy 9 comet, which slammed into Jupiter in 1994 – an event that represented the first observed collision of two celestial bodies in the solar system.

Woman dies of suffocation, 13 injured in stampede in Varanasi

Varanasi, July 22: A woman died of suffocation at the heavily crowded Dasaswamedh ghat here this morning triggering a stampede that left 13 others injured in the holy city where thousands had gathered on the occasion of solar eclipse.

District Magistrate Ajay Kumar Upadhaya said an 80-year-old woman collapsed due to the heavy rush of devotees at the ghat while another woman fainted following which people panicked and started running helter-skelter.

Russia, China kick off military exercises

Moscow, July 22: Russia and China on Wednesday launched massive joint military drills aimed at fighting terrorism and ethnic separatism, Russian news agencies reported.

The five-day exercises near the two nations’ common border “must show the international community that Russia and China have the necessary resources to ensure stability and security in the region,” Ria Novosti quoted the chief of Russia’s general staff, General Nikolai Makarov, as saying.

Rupee gains 17 paise at 48.25 against dollar in early trade

Mumbai, July 22: The Indian rupee turned stronger after a brief break yesterday and was quoted higher at 48.25 against the greenback in early trade today on the back of bullish equity markets and dollar sales.

In fairly active trade at the Interbank Foreign Exchange (forex) market, the domestic currency resumed higher at 48.38/40 a dollar and later surged to 48.25 level before being quoted at 48.32/34 a dollar in late morning deals.

Ban, Gilani may have discussed Kashmir issue: UN

United Nations, July 22: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani may have discussed the Kashmir issue during their recent meeting on the sidelines of the NAM Summit in Egypt.

“It (Kashmir) may have come up in passing, but that wasn’t the focus of their discussion,” UN spokesman Farhan Haq told reporters at the UN headquarters, in response to a question on this issue.
