Iran has sent its troops to help the regime of embattled Syrian President Bashar al-Assad fight opposition forces, a senior commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards has said.

“Before our presence in Syria, too many people were killed by the opposition but with the physical and non-physical presence of the Islamic republic, big massacres in Syria were prevented,” said Ismail Gha’ani, deputy head of the Quds force, a branch of the Revolutionary Guards in charge of overseas operations.

Jagan arrested in assets case, Andhra on alert

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Sunday evening arrested YSR Congress party leader Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy in a disproportionate assets case.

YSR party leader J. Prabhakar Rao told reporters outside Dilkusha Guest House, the CBI camp office, that the CBI has arrested Jagan, as the young leader is popularly known.

The MP and son of late chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy was arrested after the CBI grilled him for the third consecutive day.

Violence continues, Syria situation remains serious

The situation in Syria “remains extremely serious” and UN efforts to end the political crisis in the country have seen only “small progress”, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has said in a report to the Security Council.

Doctors among four charged with rape

Four people, including two government doctors, have been booked for gang-raping a teenage girl for nine days in Haryana’s Mewat district, police said Friday.

Police in Punhana area of Mewat said they were looking for all four who are absconding since the girl lodged a complaint.

The doctors include senior medical officer (SMO) Munish Bhalla and medical officer Ashish Kumar.

The 17-year-old victim told police that the doctors, posted at Punhana, 350 km from here, and two others raped her for nine consecutive days.

CPI (M) opposes Somapeta power project

Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary B V Raghavulu on Friday demanded that the State Government recover 1,046 acres of land allotted to the Nagarjuna Construction Company for the gas-based power project at Sompeta in Srikakulam district.

Talking to media persons at party office, Raghavulu said that the NCC was establishing the power plant in Sompeta against the wishes of people and it would cause huge damage to local environment.
