New Delhi, January 06: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit was today slapped with a fine of Rs 3,000 by the Delhi High Court for failing to file a reply in a defamation suit filed by her against BJP leader Vijender Gupta.

Justice Kailash Gambhir imposed the fine as Dikshit’s counsel sought adjournment of the case saying they needed more time to file the reply to Gupta’s contention questioning the high court’s power to hear her defamation suit against him.

Giving last opportunity to Dikshit’s counsel, Justice Kailash Gambhir posted the matter for March 15.

Ahmedabad, January 06: Making serious allegations against the Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT), suspended IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt today said that the agency was “reluctant” in examining key-witnesses about the February 27, 2002 meeting held at Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s residence.

In a letter to SIT chairman R K Raghavan, Bhatt has also alleged that the agency was “intentionally disregarding” important aspects of riot victim Zakia Jaffery’s complaint implicating Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and others.

Haniyeh asserted that his movement’s “presence with the Brotherhood threatens the Israeli entity,” and Badie reaffirmed the Brotherhood’s commitment to “issues of liberation, foremost the Palestinian issue” (MENA and AP, December 26).

Hyderabad, January 05: The Amberpet police of East zone on Wednesday arrested eight persons, including four women of a family, in a case of petty argument resulting in the killing of a 40-year-old woman.

Kanpur, January 05: A jilted lover enraged by his girlfriend’s refusal to marry him allegedly threw acid on her, injuring her seriously.

The girl used to run a pan masala stall to support herself and her younger brother after her parents died.

The incident took place at the busy Birhana road area in Kanpur last night when Sameer, a resident of Kuti Mall, along with his friend came on a motorbike and threw acid on the 16-year-old girl, police said.

The victim was rushed to a hospital with severe burns on her hand and chest, they said.

New Delhi, January 05:Depressed over failing in an exam, a student of Zakir Hussain College jumped to his death from the third floor of a hospital where he was being treated after slashing his wrists in an unsuccessful suicide bid, police said Thursday.

Rocky Rai, 22, a third year B.Sc student hailing from Bihar’s Darbhanga district, ended his life around 10.30 p.m. Wednesday.

“He committed suicide by jumping off from the third floor of the LNJP (Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Narayan) Hospital,” a police officer said.

Jalna, January 05: Vice president of Rashtriya Lok Manch and actress Jaya Prada today said here that though Anna Hazare was “a good and sincere” person, his associates Kiran Bedi and Arvind Kejriwal were “tainted”.

“Anna Hazare is good and sincere. But the people surrounding him…Kiran Bedi and Kejriwal, are tainted,” the actress-turned-politician said here.

On Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls, she said her party had decided to contest all seats. The people of UP were fed up with Mayawati’s corrupt government, she said.

New Delhi, January 05: Tihar Prisons will become the first jail in the country to install a full body scanner on its premises to check smuggling of prohibited items like narcotics, mobiles and weapons by inmates.

Officials said that two rounds of trials have been successfully completed in the country’s largest jail.

Lucknow, January 05: An SMS that people who doze off will be turned to rocks and a temblor is going to rock the state gave many in Uttar Pradesh a sleepless night, police said on Tuesday.

The SMS, sent by unidentified miscreants, sparked panic in several districts of the state on Monday night, they said.

The Uttar Pradesh Police have ordered an inquiry and are on the lookout for the source of the rumour.

“An inquiry is being conducted into last night’s rumour- mongering and action will be taken against those found guilty,” Inspector General of Police GP Sharma told reporters here.

Jodhpur, January 04: Bishna Ram Bishnoi, an accused in Bhanwari Devi murder case, was today arrested by police in Maharashtra and handed over to CBI which will produce him before a special court here in the next two days.

Official sources said that Bishnoi, a Rajasthan-based gangster, was arrested in Pune for his alleged involvement in the abduction and murder of Bhanwari Devi.

Dhaka, January 04: A Bangladeshi university teacher who allegedly “whished death” to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Facebook has been sentenced in absentia to six months in prison for not obeying court summons.

A high court bench Wednesday ordered the home and foreign affairs ministries to bring Ruhul Amin Khandker from Australia, where he is currently on a study leave, and arrest him upon his return, reports Xinhua.

Khandker, a teacher at Jahangirnagar University near Dhaka, had moved to Australia in 2009.

New Delhi, January 04: Widening its probe into the finances of yoga guru Ramdev, the Enforcement Directorate has summoned his aide Balkrishna in connection with a foreign exchange violation case registered against their trusts.

The agency, according to sources, has asked Balkrishna or an authorised representative on his behalf to be present before agency officials here on January 10. The representative also has been asked to bring along documents and letters related to the firms run by Ramdev’s trusts.

Beijing, January 04: Hundreds of Muslims in a northwestern China village trying to prevent the demolition of their mosque clashed with police, causing several deaths, Hong Kong media and residents said on Tuesday.

Fighting between police and members of the largely Muslim Hui ethnic group broke out on Friday in Ningxia region, adjacent to Inner Mongolia province, after authorities declared their newly built mosque illegal, the South China Morning Post said.

Hundreds of residents in Taoshan village confronted police armed with teargas, truncheons and knives, the newspaper said.

Tehran, January 04: Feeling the toll on its economy from sanctions imposed by the U.S. and EU, Iran released a threat to take action against the U.S. Navy if an aircraft carrier is moved into the Gulf.

After sanctions targeting the nation’s oil sector were imposed, Iran’s currency has fallen 40 percent against the dollar in the past month.

Last week the U.S. Navy moved the USS John C Stennis, an aircraft carrier, out of the Persian Gulf because of Iran’s naval exercises. Iran says they will take action if the ship returns.

Hyderabad, January 03: Upset over the murder of her coach during New Year celebrations, a woman hockey player Tuesday committed suicide in the port city of Visakhapatnam.

Two days after G. Bhaskar Rao was murdered by his junior, Meena ended her life by immolating herself at her residence. A police officer said she was upset and unable to bear the loss of her coach and hence committed suicide.

Tehran, January 03: The daughter of influential former Iranian president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani was on Tuesday sentenced to jail and banned from political activities for “anti state propaganda” dating back to the 2009 disputed presidential election, Iranian media reported.

The Islamic state has piled pressure on the opposition ahead of a parliamentary election in March 2, the first test of the clerical establishment’s popularity since the 2009 vote that critics say was rigged to re-elect Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Hyderabad, January 03:The Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind will organise its second State-level convention on January 5 at Nizam College Grounds.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Jamiat’s state president Hafiz Peer Shabbir Ahmed and national secretary Moulana Hakimuddin Qasmi said that nearly 50,000 members from across the State would participate in the convention.

Jaganmohan Reddy, will be produced before court Tuesday.

The vice-president of Jagati Publications Private Limited (JPPL), owned by the Kadapa MP, spent the night at government-run Dilkusha guest house, which is serving as the camp office of the CBI.
