OMC case: Gali, others custody extended till Jan 25

Hyderabad, January 12: The CBI Special Court on Thursday extended the judicial custody of former Karnataka minister Gali Janardhan Reddy, his brother-in-law and Obulapuram Mining Corporation managing director B V Srinivasa Reddy and former mines director V D Rajagopal to January 25 in the Obulapuram Mining Corporation’s illegal mining scam.

The court issued these orders when they were produced before the Nampally court after the expiry of their remand on Thursday. Following the court directions, the police have again shifted them to the Chanchalguda Central Jail.

Director V Madhusudhana Rao passes away

Hyderabad, Jan 12: Veteran film director V Madhusudhan Rao passed away after prolonged illness. He is survived by his wife Saroja and two sons.

Madhusudhana Rao provided great hits from Rata Sambandham to Bhakta Tukaram and directed all the top heroes. Known as a director for family films, he also has to his credit mythological and period films.

He won the Raghupathi Venkaiah Award and also started Madhu Film Institute, which has been the breeding ground for many actors and directors who tasted success in filmland.

Defer 4.5% Quota to Minorities Till Polls: EC

New Delhi, January 12: The Election Commission today asked the government to put on hold its decision on 4.5 per cent sub-quota for minorities in five poll-bound states till election process ends there as a controversy raged over the issue.

“It has been brought to the notice of the Commission that the Central Government has carved out 4.5 per cent sub-quota for minorities from within 27 per cent quota for OBCs in violation of the Model Code of Conduct and should be stopped by the Commission,” the EC said in a statement.

Odisha gangrape: One suspect arrested

Bhubaneswar, January 10: After a public outcry, the Odisha government Tuesday asked police to probe the alleged gangrape of a woman in Puri district nearly a month and a half ago. A criminal case was registered against four people and one of them was arrested.

The action came a day after the state human rights commission took suo motu cognizance of the matter and directed police to register a case and submit an action taken report within three days.

Vote for clean candidates, Aamir Khan

New Delhi, January 10: Bollywood actor Aamir Khan will urge people not to vote for candidates with criminal background in upcoming elections in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur.

The National Election Watch and the Association for Democratic Reforms said Tuesday: “Aamir’s recorded message will be sent through automated calls to lakhs of voters till elections in the five states are over.”

Besides English and Hindi, the message will go out in regional languages too, ADR said. The actor has already recorded a one-minute video clip.

Mayawati’s assets: Highest at Rs.87 crore

New Delhi, January 10: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati has topped the list of chief ministers in the five election-bound states with maximum assets: worth Rs.87 crore, according to the National Election Watch and the Association for Democratic Reforms.

“RTI responses from five states showed Mayawati has the highest assets at Rs.87 crore,” said the study. “Chief Minister of Manipur Okram Ibobi Singh has the lowest assets worth — just Rs.6 lakh.”

Naidu arrested: Power crisis

Hyderabad, January 10: The police on Tuesday arrested Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu, who was on a padayatra from NTR Trust Office to Vidyut Soudha, protesting the government proposal to increase power tariff and unscheduled power cuts in the state.

Talking to media persons after his arrest at Road No 3, Banjara Hills in the city, the TDP chief stated that the government cannot burden the common man, who is already struggling with skyrocketing prices of essential commodities. He said that the government should bear the additional tariff burden of Rs 16,000 crores.

Iran judge sentences American to death for spying

Tehran, January 10: An American ex-Marine, who also holds Iranian citizenship, has been sentenced to death by an Iran judge for spying for the CIA, the Fars news agency reported on Monday.

Amir Mirzai Hekmati, 28, was “sentenced to death for cooperating with a hostile nation, membership of the CIA and trying to implicate Iran in terrorism,” the verdict said, according to Fars.

Islamabad, January 09: Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari has questioned the judiciary’s inaction against his predecessor Pervez Musharraf despite an email Benazir Bhutto sent before her assassination holding him responsible for anything happening to her on returning to Pakistan.

Former prime minister Bhutto, Zardari’s wife, was assassinated Dec 27, 2007, while leaving Rawalpindi’s Liaquat Bagh after addressing an election rally.

Zardari, in an interview with Geo TV, also said Interior Minister Rehman Malik was not responsible for Bhutto’s security during the Liaquat Bagh rally.

AP still best investment destination: CM

Hyderabad, January 08: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy today said the state continued to be one of the best investment destinations in the country.

”Andhra Pradesh today stands at the top, thanks to the pro-active policies of the state government,” an official statement quoting Mr Reddy said, on the eve of the three-day Global Partnership Summit which would begin from January 11.

The release said in order to make Andhra Pradesh the investment magnet of the country, the Chief Minister had been striving to make the state one of the best investment destinations.

Fake currency racket having Pakistan-link busted, 11 arrested

Hyderabad, January 08: In a major breakthrough, the city-based National Investigation Agency (NIA) has busted a Pakistan-based Fake Indian Currency Note (FICN) racket and arrested a gang of 11 persons, including the kingpin, involved in smuggling of fake Indian currency from Pakistan, here last evening.

As many as Rs 27,000 fake currency notes were seized from the gang, who had already managed to circulate fake notes worth a crore of rupees, according to NIA sources here.

Indian-origin cop accused of using database for sex

London: An Indian-origin UK police constable has been accused of using his force’s database to target vulnerable women for sex while on duty.

Police constable Jasbir Singh Dhanda, 52, is accused of misusing the database while he was a serving officer with Derbyshire Police over a seven-year period, The Daily Mail reported.

The officer allegedly had sex with two women while he was working after tracking them down on the police systems.

Dhanda has denied all charges.

HC rejects Nithyananda disciple’s bail plea

Chennai, January 07: Madras High Court has rejected the anticipatory bail plea of former disciple of controversial self-styled godman Nithyananda and another person, who apprehended arrest in connection with a blackmail complaint.

The complaint by one Nithya Atma Prabhananda had accused the duo – Lenin alias Dithya Dharmanantha and K Kumar – of having blackmailed Nithayananda using a video film showing the godman in a compromising position with an actress.

Anuj Bidve’s body arrives at his hometown Pune

Pune, January 07 The mortal remains of 23-year-old engineering student Anuj Bidve, who was shot dead in Greater Manchester in the UK in an ‘unprovoked attack’ ten days ago, was brought back to India here today.

The body of Anuj arrived at Mumbai airport this afternoon and it was brought to Pune by ambulance late this afternoon.

The Bidve family had travelled to United Kingdom to collect Anuj’s body on Wednesday.

Woman arrested for killing daughter

Jaipur, January 07: A woman was arrested in Rajasthan on the charge of killing her one-year-old daughter by throwing her into a well, police said Saturday.

The incident took place Friday in a village near Guda Engla town of Pali district, some 300 km from here.

The woman, identified as Kuldeep Kaur, was arrested Saturday after her husband Jagtar Singh registered a first information report (FIR) against her implicating her in the murder.

Malegaon Blast: NIA Opposes Bail Petition of Pragya

Mumbai, January 07: National Investigating Agency today opposed the bail plea of a key accused in the Malegaon 2008 blast, Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur, in the special MCOCA court, saying she aided and abetted the other accused with the full knowledge of the strike and had offered all support.

On November 18, Thakur had filed a bail application in the special Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) court for the third time saying that she was falsely implicated in the case.

Bangalore, January 06: The Karnataka High Court Friday served notice to the Bangalore police commissioner for not registering an FIR against former cricketer Anil Kumble in an impersonation and forgery case.

Serving the notice, Justice S. Abdul Naseer directed the police commissioner to explain by next week why a First Information Report (FIR) was not registered against Kumble, who had been accused of forging the signature of petitioner Kumar V. Jahgirdar in an application for renewing the passport of the latter’s minor daughter Aaruni Kumar Jahgirdar in April 2011.

Every fifth murder in Delhi sexually motivated: Police

New Delhi, January 06: Every fifth murder in the capital is sexually motivated, Police Commissioner B.K. Gupta said Friday.

Addressing the annual press conference of the Delhi Police, Gupta said: “According to the latest data, 18 percent of murders in Delhi are sex-related. Other prominent reasons for murders are sudden provocation and crime-related.”

According to Gupta, family disputes were found to be behind only nine percent of murders. Enmity and disputes were the other chief motives during 2011.
