Dargah in Mysore razed, grave spared for now

Mysore, January 21: Continuing its demolition drive against illegal structures, including places of worship appropriating public spaces, the Mysore City Corporation on Wednesday night pulled down a dargah on the D Devaraj Urs Road.

The operation was conducted amid tight security more than a thousand police personnel were present at the site after midnight, with top district officials overseeing the demolition.

New Delhi, January 20: The Congress Friday said Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s Sadbhavna mission fast at Godhra “lacked sincerity of purpose” and wondered if he was expiating for the 2002 communal riots in the state.

Rushdie Cancels India Visit, Claims Threat to Life

Jaipur, January 20: Controversial author Salman Rushdie today cancelled his visit to India for the Jaipur Literature Festival citing threats to his life, ending days of speculation over his participation in the event.

In a statement read out to the press by festival producer Sanjoy K Roy, the Booker Prize winning author stated that he had been told by intelligence sources in Maharashtra and Rajasthan that “paid assassins” from the Mumbai underworld may be on their way to Jaipur to “eliminate” him.

20-yr-old child murderer found dead in jail

A maintenance worker who this week pleaded guilty to molesting and killing a 7-year-old girl was found dead of an apparent suicide in his prison cell Thursday, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections.

20-yr-old Ryan Brunn was found unresponsive at 4:15 p.m. at the state prison in Jackson, said spokeswoman Kristen Stancil. Brunn was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 5:37 p.m., Stancil said in an email to The Associated Press.

Narendra Modi begins fast in Godhra, six activists arrested

Godhra, January 20: As Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi began his day-long fast in Godhra on Friday, activist Shabnam Hashmi and five others were arrested on the outskirts of the city as they had planned to hold a parallel ‘sammelan’ to his fast.

“They have stopped and arrested us. We just want to go ahead with our convention. I don’t understand what are they afraid of? What are we saying?” asked Shabnam.

CM hopes for Cabinet rejig before Budget

Hyderabad, January 20: The Chief Minister, Mr N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, is before the state Assembly Budget Session in February.

The party leadership seems to have asked the CM to reexamine the proposals after a thorough scrutiny of the consequences that may follow a reshuffle.

Sources said the CM had discussed the Cabinet reshuffle with the central leaders for close to eight hours weighing the pros and cons, but was finally told to do some more analysis on the likely fallout of the changes that are going to be effected.

New Delhi, January 20: The Congress on Friday slammed Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s Godhra fast calling it a ‘political drama’. Gujarat Congress leader Shaktisinh Gohil also accused Modi of wasting public money in his fasts.

“This is a political drama. Modi is wasting public money. Why is he not visiting any riot victims,” Gohil questioned.

Reacting to the arrest of six activists protesting against Modi’s fast, Gohil said, “The arrest of activists outside Godhra shows Modi’s dictatorial approach.”

2 PR MLAs in, Shankar Rao sacked

Hyderabad, January 20: The Chief Minister, Mr N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, on Thursday inducted MLC Mr C. Ramachandraiah, and the Anakapalle MLA, Mr Ganta Srinivasa Rao, both belonging to the erstwhile Praja Rajyam, into the Cabinet taking the total strength to 38.

In a simple ceremony held in Raj Bhavan lawns, the Governor, Mr E.S.L. Narasimhan, administered the oath of office and secrecy to the two leaders who got Cabinet berths as part of the deal the Praja Rajyam struck with Congress for the merger.

Man arrested for sexual harassment

Bhopal, January 20: A man was held here Tuesday after a non-resident Indian woman accused him of sexually harassing her on a Delhi-Bhopal flight, police said.

The woman, who lives in Singapore, complained first to the Central Industrial Security Force and then to the local police that she was sleeping when a co-passenger, Rajul Agrawal, molested her.

The man, an officer with the Bharat Heavy Electrical Ltd, was arrested and then let off on bail, police officer G.D. Sharma told IANS.

20-year-old girl raped in Dwarka

New Delhi, January 20: A 20-year-old girl from Manipur was raped allegedly by an unidentified man who gave her a lift while she was returning home from office, police said on Thursday.

The incident took place in south-west Delhi’s Dwarka on Wednesday night and a case has been registered.

The victim claimed she was waiting for public transport after she finished her office work around 8:45 pm in Gurgaon.

A man offered her lift to her residence in Mahipalpur but instead of driving her there, he forcefully took her to Dwarka, she claimed.

Salman Rushdie now back on Twitter, no comment on India

New York, January 20: After days of silence, India-born author Salman Rushdie is back on Twitter but has not posted a single word on his appearance at the Jaipur Literature Festival which remains in limbo.

In his latest post on the microblogging site today, he said, “Simi said the only Salman she liked worked in Bollywood. So all that smarming up to me last time I was in Bombay was fake? Such a surprise.”

Minutes later, there was another post that read “Yes, I know it was a satirical news report about Simi. Couldn’t resist joining in the fun.”

Police officer sacked for having sex on duty

London, January 19: A married British police officer has been sacked after he had sex with women in police stations, The Telegraph reported Thursday.

An internal investigation found Troy Van-Eda, 44, a constable for Greater Manchester Police, had sex at two stations and also at the women’s homes.

In one instance, he had intercourse with one woman in a station’s boiler room in April 2004, less than 24 hours after she was stopped for failing to wear a seat belt.

Actress banned from Iran over nude photo

London, January 19: Iranian actress Golshifteh Farahani has been banned from returning to her homeland after appearing naked in a photoshoot.

Government officials have reportedly told Farahani she is no longer welcome in Iran after posing naked in French news magazine Madame Le Figarom, reports contactmusic.com.

“I was told by a Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guide official that … you may offer your artistic services somewhere else,” contactmusic.com quoted the 28-year-old as saying.

Port Blair, January 18: The controversial video showing semi-naked Jarawa tribe women dancing before tourists was shot sometime in September-October 2008 and the police sought the help of the Defence establishment in ascertaining the identity of the man shown in the film in Army fatigue.

According to sources privy to the probe, the police sought the help of Adim Janjati Vikas Samiti (AAJVS), the interface between the local administration and tribals, which helped identify the dancing women and children.

Rushdie’s Visit: Rajasthan, Delhi Police to Remain Alert

New Delhi, January 18: The Centre today asked the Rajasthan and Delhi Police to take all possible steps to deal with any law and order situation arising out of a possible visit of controversial writer Salman Rushdie to take part in the Jaipur Literature Festival.

The Home Ministry advisory asked the two police forces to remain alert and deploy adequate forces in all sensitive locations to deal with any situation and protests that may be staged if Rushdie turns up in the country in the next few days, official sources said.
