Kiran failed to redress people’s grievances: Venkaiah

Hyderabad, February 01: Bharatiya Janata Party senior leader M Venkaiah Naidu on Wednesday said that Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy had totally failed in redressing the grievances of people.

Talking to media persons at the state party office here, Venkaiah Naidu said that the governance in the state came to stand still during the Kiran Kumar Reddy government.

He said that development of state was affected due to agitations on various issues—fee reimbursement, junior doctors’ protest and dharna by textile traders against VAT.

Body found in Renigunta was not Bhanu’s

Tirupati, February 01: There was confusion when a dead body found in the Agraharam tank at Renugunta was suspected to be that of Bhanu Kiran, prime accused in the murder of Maddelacheruvu Suri.

However, police said that it might not be Bhanu’s. CID officials said measurements of the body did not match Bhanu’s and even by looks, it did not resemble the accused. They, however, said they were trying to match the moles and height of the body with Bhanu’s known description.

Narendra Modi not to depose before 2002 riots panel: HC

Ahmedabad, February 01: The Gujarat high court rejected an application seeking direction to the Nanavati commission to summon chief minister Narendra Modi and question him in regard with the 2002 riots.

A division bench of justices Akil Kureshi and Sonia Gokani upheld a single judge’s order passed in November 2009, and observed that the issue of summoning any person was the discretion of the quasi-judicial body, which could take decision on the basis of its appreciation of evidence gathered during the proceedings.

Telangana issue delayed due to elections: Keshav Rao

Hyderabad, January 31: Telangana Congress Steering Committee Chairman K Keshav Rao has said that the Telangana statehood issue was delayed because of the elections in five states.

Talking to mediapersons after the Steering Committee meeting at MP Komatireddy Rajagopal’s residence here yesterday, he said that the demand for Telangana statehood was not weakened.

Once the elections are over, the MPs will focus the issue before the Congress high command and mount pressure on the Centre to introduce a Bill on Telangana in the Budget Session of Parliament, he said.

Emirati walker reaches Makkah after 47 days

Dubai, January 31: He has finally reached his destination, 47 days after he began the most ambitious journey of his life on foot, walking from Ruwais in Abu Dhabi to Makkah.

Emirati walker Jalal Bin Thaneya, who undertook the walk to raise funds for the Dubai Centre for Special Needs, tweeted this minutes after arriving at the Al Masjid Al Haram in Makkah late on Monday night: “Al Hamdulillah I have reached the sacred Masjid Al Haram on foot from the UAE… I have ended the mission, I will perform Umrah now. Subhanallah, no road is too far .”

Geelani opposes fatwa to expel Christian priests

Srinagar, January 31: Senior separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani Tuesday locked horns with the local Sharia board over a fatwa seeking expulsion of four Christian priests from the Kashmir Valley.

Geelani, a Hurriyat leader, said in a statement from New Delhi: “Muslims should protect their religion themselves. Expelling somebody from Kashmir is no solution.

“Kashmiris cannot ignore the contributions of Christian missionary schools towards the educational system in the Valley.

Leaked Radia tapes doctored, government tells SC

New Delhi, January 31: The central government Tuesday told the Supreme Court that the versions published in the media of the controversial conversations of corporate lobbyist Niira Radia did not match the original tapes.

The court was told this in a report given in a sealed cover in the course of the hearing of a petition by industrialist Ratan Tata, who contended that though his phone was not tapped his privacy was violated because his conversations with Radia were recorded.

IAS officer’s wife held for slapping cop

Banglore, Janaury 31: Cubbon Park police on Monday night arrested Anuja Kumar Pandey and produced her before VIII ACMM judge Kiran Kini, who granted her interim bail. Anuja, wife of IAS officer and Hescom MD Pankaj Kumar Pandey, had on Sunday night assaulted a woman police officer on duty.

Earlier in the evening, a special police team traced Anuja to a relative’s house in Koramangala VII Block and arrested her. “She was preparing to get anticipatory bail. But she’s only been given interim bail,” a senior police officer said.

4 accused acquitted in Adnan murder

Mumbai, January 30: A Mumbai sessions court on Monday acquitted the four men arrested for the 2007 murder of teenager Adnan Patrawala.

A fifth accused was a minor at the time of the murder and was tried separately by the Juvenile Justice Board.

Sujit Nair, Ayush Bhat, Rajeev Dharaiya and Amit Kausha were acquitted of charges of extortion, kidnapping and murder as the court felt that evidence collected by Mumbai Police was weak.

The fifth person was not named as he was a minor at the time of the murder.

Sania reaches career-best 7th spot in doubles ranking

New Delhi, January 30: Sania Mirza’s semifinal finish in the women’s doubles event at the recently-concluded Australian Open has catapulted her to a career-best ranking of seventh position in the latest WTA Team Rankings, issued today.

Sania jumped from 11th spot to be inside the top-10 in doubles rankings and if she manages to stay in the top 10 till June 21, 2012, she will get a direct entry into the London Olympics. The Hyderabadi girl though slipped in the singles rankings to be placed at 111th spot from 106th position.

Baby Falak’s case: Five developments today

New Delhi, January 30: A two-year-old relentless abused by unidentified adults is fighting for her life at Delhi’s AIIMS hospital. Her doctors and nurses have named her “Falak”, meaning “the sky.” She went through a gruelling brain surgery – her second in recent days – this morning.

1. In critical condition: Doctors who operated on Falak today say they needed to remove fluid from her brain. They say there is “a high likelihood” of post-operative complications. Her chances of survival have worsened.

Shutdown by Dalit groups in Andhra

Hyderabad, Janaury 30: A day-long shutdown began in Andhra Pradesh on Monday on a call given by Dalit groups to protest the recent desecration of statues of B.R. Ambedkar.

Schools, colleges, shops and business establishments remained closed in many districts while protestors blocked roads to stop buses of state-owned Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC).

Student organistations, especially Osmania University student Joint Action Committee has also called for a shutdown to protest the desecration of statues in Amlapuram and other parts of East Godavari district.

IAS officer’s wife being investigated for slapping police woman

Bangalore, January 30: A police woman in Bangalore has alleged that an IAS officer’s wife beat her up on Sunday when she was trying to do her job. The police inspector, Anjumala T. Naik, claims that the bureaucrat’s wife has just one pass to watch a cricket match. But she insisted on being accompanied by her daughter for the match which featured local celebrities.

When Inspector Naik tried to stop her, the woman allegedly asked members of the Karnataka Cricket Association to intervene. They allowed her daughter and her to enter the stadium.

Child was promised snacks and Rs.5 to bathe in R-Day tableau

Bhopal, Jan 30 (IANS) An eight-year-old boy who was made to bathe in cold water for hours at a tableau put up for the Republic Day parade in Dewas district said Monday that he was promised snacks and Rs.5 in return for the act.

The child, named Sunny, said that a bald man, Babulal Mandloi, contacted him.

“I had gone to watch jhanki (tableaux) with my aunty. One bald man came and told me he would give me snacks and Rs.5 if I take bath in the jhanki,” said Sunny.

CPI holds shirt-less rally against VAT

Hyderabad, Jan 29 (INN): Communist Party of India (CPI) state secretary K Narayana on Sunday demanded that the State Government withdraw VAT on textiles.

In a symbolic protest, Narayana and other CPI activists took out a rally to Indira Park by removing their shirts. Later, talking to reporters Narayana said that the continuation of VAT on textiles would put additional burden on the common man to the extent that they would not able to buy clothes.

Karimnagar police seize huge quantity of explosives

Karimnagar, Jan 29 (INN): The police on Sunday seized a huge quantity of explosive material and detonators at Medipally in Karimnagar district.

The seized explosives include 200 detonators, 600 gelatin sticks and 16 bags containing ammonium nitrate. The seizure was made during routine checks by the Karimnagar district police. On suspicion police intercepted an auto-rickshaw at Medipally and on search, explosive that were concealed in gunny bags were found.
