Head Constable commits sucide

Hyderabad, February 04: Disgusted with family problems, a Police Head Constable allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself at Erragudapalm police station in Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh today.

Police said, two bullets had pierced the chest and abdomen of 52-year-old Krupanandam’s body.

Police also said, they were ascertaining the exact cause of death as to whether he had shot himself or the carbon rifle which he had during the time of his death had misfired.

Krupanandam was recently transferred to Erragudapalem police station. He is survived by his wife and two children.

SMS will now be treated as train ticket

Mumbai, February 04: Booking an outstation train ticket is much easier now. All it requires is a few keystrokes on your cellphone. The ticket comes in the form of an SMS, which can be shown to the ticket checker instead of a paper ticket.

Railway officials said there was good response to the Mobile Rail Ticket Booking Service, which has been introduced by the IRCTC. Tickets can be booked on the mobile website: www.irctc.co.in/mobile.

The IRCTC mobile website is convenient and easy to use, and can be accessed from any browser enabled mobile having basic GPRS activated on the phone.

Nurse case: CBI custody of accused extended till Feb 6

Jodhpur, February 04: A court here Saturday remanded two accused arrested in connection with the disappearance of nurse Bhanwari Devi to judicial custody for 14 days, while the CBI custody of another accused was extended till Feb 6, officials said.

Three accused – Pukhraj Bishnoi, Dinesh Bishnoi and Reshmaram Bishnoi – were presented in court of an additional chief judicial magistrate after completion of their Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) remand.

US changing visa rules to attract the highly-skilled

Washington, February 04: To make America more attractive to highly-skilled foreign students and workers, the United States has announced a series of reforms, including changes in the F-1 and H-1B visa rules, that may benefit professionals from India.

The interim measures are aimed at improving the competitiveness of US companies in the world market and stimulating US job creation before comprehensive immigration reforms for “fixing our broken immigration system,” the Department of Homeland Security announced.

Another IAS officer appears before CBI in Jagan case

Hyderabad, February 04: Another senior Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer Saturday appeared before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the case involving alleged illegal assets of YSR Congress party leader Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy.

K. Ratna Prabha, an IAS officer of Karnataka cadre who worked in Andhra Pradesh on deputation for last six years, was quizzed by CBI officials for over three hours at Dilkusha guest house, the camp office of the CBI, the agency’s officials said.

Never-say-die Swamy ‘will appeal’ against judgement

New Delhi, February 04: The never-say-die Janata Party chief Subramanian Swamy Saturday said he was surprised but not disappointed and would appeal against a trial court’s decision to dismiss his plea against Home Minister P. Chidambaram in the 2G spectrum allocation case.

“I am surprised…but not disappointed because this is part of the game,” Swamy told reporters here minutes after the order of Special CBI judge O.P. Saini dismissing his plea to make Chidambaram an accused in the 2G case.

“I will appeal in the high court and if need be I will go to the Supreme Court,” said Swamy.

200 dead in government assault: Syrian activists

Beirut, February 04: In a barrage of mortar shells, Syrian forces killed 200 people and wounded hundreds in Homs in an offensive that appears to be the bloodiest episode in the nearly 11-month-old uprising, activists said Saturday.

The assault in Homs, which has been one of the main flashpoints of opposition during the uprising, comes as the UN Security Council prepares to vote on a draft resolution backing an Arab call for President Bashar Assad to give up power.

Woman’s body found near Pakistan mosque

Islamabad, February 04: The body of a young woman with deep wounds on her head was found stuffed in a sack near a mosque in Rawalpindi, police said.

The victim was identified as Nazima Perveen, 22.

She had been missing since Thursday after she left her home to teach the Holy Quran to children in Gulistan Colony, the daily Dawn reported Saturday.

“She gave lessons to one of her students but did not turn up at the houses of other two students,” said police officer Ashraf Butt, who is leading the probe.

CBI picks up pace in Jagan case, grills ex-CS

Hyderabad, February 04: With the focus now shifting away from the Emaar-APIIC township scam case, the pace has picked up in the Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy assets case. Confident 2G judgment will be out Saturday: Swamy

New Delhi, February 04: Janata Party chief Subramanian Swamy said he was confident that judgement would be delivered later Saturday after a trial court deferred his plea on the alleged role of Home Minister P. Chidambaram in the 2G spectrum case till 12.15 p.m.

“I am confident that the judgment will be delivered today. I can sense the ambience inside the court,” Swamy told a news channel.

Swamy had filed a plea seeking direction to the CBI to probe the role of Chidambaram, the then finance minister, in fixing 2G licence prices and the grant of spectrum.

Hyderabad, February 04: A leading Islamic seminary in Hyderabad has issued a fatwa asking Muslims to desist from un-Islamic practices like playing music, singing and dancing on Milad-un-Nabi, the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).

The Jamia Nizamia has asked community members to avoid excess revelry and ostentatious expenditure during Milad, which falls Feb 5. It has advised people not to put up flags with the names of Allah and the Prophet Moahmmed written on them as the flags may fall down, which will amount to showing disrespect.

IM operative linked to Jama Masjid blast nabbed: Police

New Delhi, February 04: A suspected Indian Mujahideen terrorist believed to be involved in the Jama Masjid blast was arrested in Bihar, police said Friday.

“The suspected terrorist is identified as Mohammed Tariq (35). He was arrested from Nalanda in Bihar,” police said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Ashok Chand said: “Tariq is co-founder of IM. He joined SIMI in 1998 and is an engineering student.”

The suspected terrorist was arrested by special investigation team (SIT) of Delhi Police.

Drums of war beat louder as Iran and Israel step up rhetoric

Tehran, February 04: Iran’s supreme leader threatened to attack Israel yesterday in retaliation for Western sanctions against the Islamic Republic, warning that “threatening Iran and attacking Iran will harm America”. Baby Falak taken off ventilator

New Delhi, February 03: Two-year-old Falak, who has been fighting for life at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), was taken off ventilator on Friday morning. Doctors at AIIMS said that Falak was stable but still critical.

Concerns remained on the spread of infection in her brain fluids. Doctors have claimed this could be the biggest factor in saving her life.

Meanwhile, on the investigation front, a fourth person, a woman named Aarti, was arrested for pushing the 15-year-old, who got Falak to AIIMS, into prostitution.

Russian city to slap fine for promoting homosexuality

Moscow, February 03: A city legislature in a central Russian town has approved a bill that will penalise people with fines for promoting homosexuality.

The bill, pushed by the pro-Kremlin United Russia party, was backed by 28 out of 35 deputies in Kostroma town’s legislature.

A similar ban is already in place in the southern Astrakhan and central Ryazan regions but it was shelved in St. Petersburg, Russia’s second city, last November after MPs failed to agree on its “legal definitions”.

First female train driver in Dubai

Dubai, February 02: Mariam Al Safar, 28, from Dubai, has made transport history, becoming the first female to operate a train in the UAE and in the whole of the Middle East.

Mariam is one of the few UAE residents qualified to take the reins of a Dubai Metro train, and the only woman to do so, the Dailymail reports.

Dubai has got one of the most advanced metro systems in the world, and it is actually manned by an automatic driving system, but a manual operator is still needed in case of unplanned incidents or for when the automatic system is undergoing repairs.

Modi’s Rule in Gujarat is Like That of Nazis: Cong

Ahmedabad, February 01: After facing embarrassment over some party leaders’ praise of Narendra Modi, Congress today targeted the chief minister, likening his rule with that of the Nazis.

“The Nazis also built autobahns (German expressways) but what defined the Nazi regime wasn’t those autobahns. It was Auschwitz (concentration camp). It was Treblinka (extermination camp). It was ghettos (where jews were forced to live),” party spokesperson Manish Tewari told reporters.

Tewari, however, hastened to add that he was not drawing any parallel.

Heavy police posse at Gandhi hospital

Hyderabad, February 01: Heavy police posse was posted at the Gandhi Hospital in Secunderabad, as tension prevailed on the eighth day of the junior doctors’ strike. As the medicos called for “Chalo Hyderabad”, their colleagues from various parts of the State, started pouring into the city.

Sensing trouble, police have closed the gates of Gandhi Hospital.

Addressing the media, junior doctors said that a heavy posse of police force and their trucks surrounded the hospital. They said that they failed to understand why police were over-reacting to their peaceful agitation.
