Karimnagar police prevents Kavitha from unveiling statue

Telangana Jagruti president K Kavitha was taken into custody by the Karimnagar police on Sunday while she was proceeding to a village to unveil the statue of tribal leadeer Kommaram Bheem.

Kavitha was arrested near Chittakani in Kataram mandal. She was scheduled to go Yemenpalli near Manthan of Karimnagar district. Police said that the statue was installed without permission and therefore, its unveiling was disallowed by the police.

Kavitha was later released by the police. (INN)

Jagan will be next CM: Sabbamhari

Anakapalli MP K Sabbamhari on Sunday claimed that YS Jagan Mohan Reddy will become the Chief Minister after next elections.

Talking to reporters here, Sabbamhari said that only Jagan Mohan Reddy could fill the political vacuum created due to the untimely death of former Chief Minister YS Rajasekhar Reddy. He said the people vote for the YSR Congress party as the best alternative to Congress Government which has ignored people’s welfare after YSR’s death.

Britain draws up battle plan against Iran

Britain is reportedly drawing up a battle plan for a war with Iran as top defence officials believe London will be “sucked into” any new conflict with Tehran.

Plans are being made to send hundreds of troops and an nuclear submarine to the Gulf region, The Sun reported.

Defence officials believe it is just a matter of when the war breaks out — with the timescale set between 18 and 24 months.

41 MRDS to come up in Hyderabad : NDMA VC

Forty-one Mobile Radiation Detection Systems (MRDS) will set up in the state capital soon to detect radioactive material using in acts of terrorism and disruption.

Talking to mediapersons here today, National Disaster Managment Authority (NDMA) Vice-Chairman M Shashidhar Reddy said such systems would come up at all major cities across the country as part of the preparedness to handle radiological emergencies like the one that hit the Mayapuri area in Delhi in 2010 when one person died and eight people were hospitalised for radiation exposure.

Obama calls US commander over Afghan violence

US President Barack Obama telephoned the top American commander in Afghanistan Saturday to discuss the ongoing violence over the Quran burning.

Obama thanked Gen. John Allen, commander of the US and NATO forces in Afghanistan, for the “measures he is taking to protect our service members and civilians”, the White House said in a statement.

Washington “remains committed to a partnership with the government and people of Afghanistan, as we work to realize our shared goal of disrupting, dismantling and defeating Al Qaeda,” Xinhua quoted the statement as saying.

Shoaib Akhtar escapes unhurt in car accident

Former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar escaped unhurt after his car rammed into the barricades near the Prime Minister Secretariat here Sunday.

Akhtar was returning home from a five-star hotel when the accident took place. The front portion of his car was badly damaged but he was lucky tocome out of it unhurt, The Express Tribune reported.

The police did not file any case and allowed the retired cricketer to go home.

Don’t get offended by ‘sexy’, says chief of National Commission for Women

In a bizarre comment, the Chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW), Mamta Sharma has claimed that the word ‘sexy’ should not be considered offensive.

She says the word actually means ‘beautiful and charming’ and it should not be taken in a negative sense.

However, her argument has angered the BJP and women’s groups who say that the NCW Chief’s remark is shocking and demoralising for women.

The BJP’s Women’s Wing in Rajasthan has asked the NCW Chief to resign.

‘Face’ of Gujarat riots to launch Mumbai protest initiative

Quran-Burning: Afghans Attack UN Complex in Protest

Rock-throwing protesters attacked a UN compound and clashed with police in northern Afghanistan today, as a fifth day of protests over the burning of Quran left at least three dead.

Thousands attacked the complex in Kunduz but did not get in as violence flared across the city, in unrest that raised to 27 the death toll from protests at Quran burning by troops from the US-led NATO force, according to an AFP tally.

A UN spokeswoman confirmed the attack but refused to say how many UN staff were on site at the time.

Minor raped, thrown on rail line

An eight-year-old girl was abducted, raped and abandoned on railway track here, police said Friday.

The incident came light Friday morning after the injured girl managed to return home and inform her parents, who filed a police complaint.

The girl, a resident of of Arthala area, left home to buy groceries from a nearby shop when an unidentified man abducted her and took her towards a deserted area near the Delhi-Kolkata railway track where he raped the girl and fled, leaving her badly injured and unconscious.

Hadi elected as Yemen’s new president

Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi was elected as Yemen’s new president with 6.6 million people voting in his favour, said the country’s Supreme Committee for Elections and Referendum Friday.

Hadi, 66, who was the sole candidate in the election, will lead Yemen’s transitional government for next two years, Xinhua reported.

The new president has pledged to carry out reforms during his transitional term and is set to launch a national dialogue with all political factions in Yemen after he takes office.

He also vowed to combat resurgent Al-Qaeda off-shoot, Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP).

Man insured wife two days before killing her

A Briton who took out an insurance policy on his wife two days before brutally killing her has been sentenced for a minimum term of 22 years.

Mohammed Tariq Aziz was found guilty of battering to death 41-year-old Zarina Bibi by a jury at Aylesbury Crown Court, the Daily Mail reported.

Bibi was found dead at the family home in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, March 16 last year. She had suffered multiple head injuries.

Detective Chief Inspector Vince Grey, of Thames Valley Police, said: “We are pleased with the decision that the jury has reached today in the trial of Mohammed Tariq Aziz.

Malaysians protest Quran burning in Afghanistan

A group of Malaysian Muslims marched from a mosque to the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur after Friday prayers to protest against the burning of Qurans at a NATO base in Afghanistan.

The protesters, who were members of Malaysia’s Islamist political party Pan-Malaysia Islamic Party (PAS), chanted “Down with the US”, carried banners reading: “Damn You, US” and “Respect our Quran”, Xinhua reported.

They submitted a protest note to a representative of the embassy.

Quran burning protests rage in Afghanistan

Thousands of Afghans Wednesday staged demonstrations in Kabul and Jalalabad over the alleged burning of the holy Quran by foreign soldiers, with three injured in clashes with police.Protests erupted Tuesday here after media reports said copies of the Quran were found in the rubbish that NATO transported in a truck Monday night to a pit where waste is burned.

On Wednesday, demonstrations were also held in Jalalabad, capital of eastern Nangarhar province.

Obama apologises over Quran burning

President Barack Obama has apologised over the burning of Qurans by NATO troops at a US base in Afghanistan, calling it an inadvertent error, the Karzai’s office said Thursday.

“We will take the appropriate steps to avoid any recurrence, including holding accountable those responsible,” the CNN quoted Obama as saying.

The apology came as the Taliban called on Muslims to attack NATO military bases and convoys and kill its soldiers following the admission that NATO troops had incinerated Islamic religious material at Bagram Airfield.

Scolded by father, Class 8 girl ends life

A 12-year old girl in Rajasthan jumped into a well and died after she was scolded by her father for not studying property, police said Wednesday.

The incident took place late Tuesday night at a Tikaria village in Banswara district, some 500 km from here.

Police said Deepika, a Class 8 student at a government school, was rebuked by her father Dhanpal Yadav, a famer, for not studying well.

“Yadav told her to concentrate more on studies. However, the father did not hurt her physically,” a police officer said.

I could have used ‘Gandhigiri’: Saif

Saif Ali Khan, who is in the midst of a controversy after a scuffle with an NRI businessman, says he could have used ‘Gandhigiri’ to sort out the matter peacefully, provided the situation allowed him to do so.

“I think I could have reacted to the incident using ‘Gandhigiri’. But that time the situation was worse. I am not saying that I am totally innocent but I was not guilty alone,” Saif told reporters here late Wednesday night.

At least four people were killed and 19 injured Wednesday after thousands of Afghanis for the second day staged angry demonstrations in Kabul and Jalalabad over the alleged Quran burning by US military, Xinhua reported.

Shakir Ahmad Rayees fled to Pakistan along with a group of people in 1995 when militancy broke out in the state.
