Bachchans to attend Akhilesh’s swearing-in

Jaya Bachchan is set to attend Akhilesh Yadav’s crowning as Uttar Pradesh chief minister despite the political distance she has been keeping from the Samajwadi Party since 2010.

A message from Abu Azmi, the Samajwadi representative in Mumbai, on Monday confirmed the Bachchans are likely to show up at Wednesday’s swearing-in, sources said.

“Amitabh Bachchan, who is recovering from a surgery, may attend if the doctors permit him, but Jaya Bachchan is all set to attend the programme,” a message from Azmi said.

Samajwadi Party leader shot dead

Shammi Kohli, a Samajwadi Party leader here, was shot dead overnight in a bus going to Lucknow by men who escaped into the dark, police said Tuesday.

Family members said she boarded the Volvo bus around 11.30 p.m. When the bus halted at a roadside eatery in Oraiya, passengers told the police that the killers barged in and shot her dead.

Two bullets pierced her chest and head, resulting in instant death.

The Delhi-born Shammi Kohli, who was locked in a legal battle with her daughter-in-law, was in the lottery business in the 1990s.

Indian American mother accused of drowning baby

A 30-year-old Indian American pharmacist, suffering from postpartum depression, allegedly killed her one-year-old son she hated by drowning him in a bathtub.

According to police reports, Neha Patel, of Florida allegedly drowned her infant son Ishan on February 16, then wrapped him in a blanket and went on a 13-hour drive through Florida, including the Tampa International Airport, where she intended to jump from the parking structure.

We have not received ACB report on cops arrest: DGP

Andhra Pradesh Director General of Police V Dinesh Reddy today said he has not received a report from the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on the arrest of seven police personnel on March 11 for collecting bribes from the liquor syndicates to overlook the violations of the provisions of AP Excise Act.

Mr Reddy made these comments after a journalist at a press conference asked him on the action he was going to take against the erring policemen following their arrest.

Twin cities to get 4 commissionerates soon: DGP

The twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad will soon get four police commissionerates under Greater Hyderabad Commissionerate, Andhra Pradesh Director General of Police V Dinesh Reddy said today.

Addressing a press conference here, he said the four new Commissionerates– Hyderabad Commissionerate, Hyderabad South, Secunderabad Commissionerate and Cyberabad Commissionerate– will have equal number of Commissioners of Police and it would be headed by Chief Commissioner of Police (CCP).

The Opposition parties on Tuesday demanded that the State Government take up discussion in the House on 26 controversial GOs issued by ministers and IAS officers against whom the Supreme Court has issued notices. Major Industries Minister Dr J Geetha Reddy on Tuesday said that the ministers who were served notices by the Supreme Court in connection with issue of controversial GOs, would respond on the issue once they receive notices from the apex court.

Talking to media persons after emerging out of meeting with Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, Geetha Reddy said that the Ministers did not take any decision on the issue except discussing it with the Chief Minister. She said that the GOs were issued as per the established rules and regulations.

82 students booked for malpractic

As many as 82 students have been booked for malpractice during the intermediate examination held across the State on Tuesday.

A total of 10,24,345 students in General category and 88,271 vocational students appeared for the Physics – I and Economics Paper – I of the intermediate. However, as many as 86,505 or 7.77 per cent students abstained from the examination.

Russian woman was living with husband’s body

An elderly woman in Russia’s Far East city of Khabarovsk has been found to be living in a flat alongside the body of her deceased husband, investigators said Sunday.

On March 5, doctors arrived at a 72-year-old retiree’s residence to render her medical assistance. They noticed a mummified body of her husband lying on the bed in one of the rooms.

The visiting doctors immediately informed the police about this.

‘35% of MLAs Have Criminal Cases, 66% are Crorepatis’

More than one-third of candidates elected in the just concluded Assembly polls have criminal cases against them, with Uttar Pradesh topping the list.

35 per cent or 252 of the 690 MLAs elected to the five Assemblies — Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhan, Manipur and Goa — have criminal background, a rise of eight per cent since 2007.

Black flags were shown to Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan here, by those opposing the appointment of a Saudi national as the caretaker of the ‘Rubaat’ (guest house) of the Nawab of Bhopal in Saudi Arabia.

The protesters belonged to the Arif Masood fan club and were led by its president Abdul Nafees last night.

Tens of thousands demonstrated across Syria on Friday after the main weekly Muslim prayers, notably in northern Aleppo, with security forces opening fire on protesters in various regions, killing at least one, activists said.

“There are 15 demonstrations taking place in the city of Aleppo and about 40 across the province,” said Mohamed Halabi, a local activist reached by telephone from Beirut.

“Security forces have opened fire at most of the demonstrations to disperse the crowds,” he added. “In Aleppo city, there is a heavy security presence and arrests taking place.”
