Baby Falak’s mother performs her last rites

The body of baby Falak was Friday handed over her mother Munni by the AIIMS for the last rites of the battered two-year-old who died of cardiac arrest Thursday night after a grim battle with life for nearly 60 days, doctors said.

“We had received a letter from the child welfare committee (CWC) saying that the baby’s mother Munni will be performing the baby’s last rites, which were performed at around 4 p.m.,” Deepak Agrawal, AIIMS assistant professor of neurosurgery, told IANS.

Falak’s death has left a void at AIIMS as doctors and the other staff had become attached to her.

Srilakshmi’s bail petition hearing adjourned to March 19

The CBI Special Court on Friday adjourned the hearing on bail petition of suspended IAS officer Y Srilakshmi in Obulapuram Mining Corporation’s illegal mining case to March 19.

When her petition came up for hearing on Friday, the CBI counsel filed a counter petition raising objection to sanctioning of bail to Srilakshmi. After hearing the arguments of CBI counsel, Justice Nagamaruthi Sarma posted the petition for next hearing on March 19.

Tirupati MLA and Congress leader Chiranjeevi has closed down PRP office in the Assembly, following merger of the party in Congress even in the House, formally.

A separate room was allotted to PRP after it won 18 seats in the last elections. However, last year Chiranjeevi had announced merger of his party in the Congress. He had also informed the Election Commission about the merger. However, though the party was merged in Congress later, its integration in the Assembly was not possible till recently, because of some legal problems.

Aus Court Jails Indian Taxi Driver for Raping Passenger

A 32-year-old Indian taxi driver in Australia has been sentenced to six years in jail after being found guilty of raping a female passenger who was said to be drunk.

Amrit Pal Singh was found guilty by a jury of raping the 24-year-old woman in February last year, ABC reported today.

The victim was said to have gone at a hen’s night and was severely intoxicated when Singh picked her up in his taxi.

He then drove her to a park in North Lake in Perth’s southern suburbs and raped her before taking her home.

2002 Riots: Zakia Files Fresh Petition for SIT Report

Zakia Jaffery, widow of former MP Ehsan Jaffery, today filed a fresh application in a local court seeking a copy of final report of Special Investigation Team on her complaint against Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and others on 2002 post-Godhra riots.

The hearing on the application was adjourned till March 27 by Metropolitan Magistrate M S Bhatt after SIT sought time to file its reply.

In her plea, Zakia has demanded that the Supreme Court-appointed agency’s report be declared a public document and a copy of it be provided to her immediately.

Chairman of the Legislature Committee probing the porngate episode involving three ruling BJP MLAs in Karnataka today said eight to ten other legislators had also watched sleazy clips in the Assembly.

Shrishailappa Bidarur, however, indicated these MLAs would not be summoned as it’s not part of the terms of reference of the panel.

His comments confirm the claim by committee member Nehru Olekar who created a flutter earlier this month saying 8-10 more MLAs, including those from opposition parties, had also watched the pornclips.

‘74% of Pak Minority Women Faced Sexual Harassment’

Almost three-quarters of women from Pakistan’s minority communities have faced sexual harassment while 43 per cent complained of religious discrimination at workplaces, educational institutions and neighbourhoods, according to a new report.

The report, prepared by the National Commission for Justice and Peace, states that about 74 per cent of the women faced sexual harassment.

Model Code Violation: Bukhari to Appear Before Court

A local court today issued a notice to Shahi Imam of Delhi’s Jama Masjid, Syed Ahmad Bukhari, to appear before it on April 9 in a case related to alleged violation of model code of conduct during the 2007 Uttar Pradesh assembly polls.

Chief Judicial Magistrate Suresh Shand Arya issued the notice after Bukhari failed to appear before it today as directed.

Rushdie factor: Imran Khan won’t attend India Today conclave

Pakistani cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan has refused to attend the India Today conclave this week because of the presence of “The Satanic Verses” author Salman Rushdie, the organisers said Wednesday.

“We deeply regret that Imran Khan will not address the India Today Conclave because of Salman Rushdie’s participation. The India Today Conclave is a platform for free and frank exchange of ideas,” India Today Group chairman Aroon Purie in a statement.

TDP accuses CM of shielding corrupt ministers

The Telugu Desam Party on Wednesday accused the State Government of shielding the tainted Ministers, who were served notices by the Supreme Court in connection with disproportionate assets case of Jagan Mohan Reddy.

Talking to media persons at Telugu Desam Legislature Party Office, TDP deputy floor leader Ashok Gajapathi Raju demanded that the government sack the ministers immediately from the Cabinet as they brought disrepute to the State and place all the files related to controversial GOs before the Speaker. He asked the government to explain what steps it would take on the issue.

Ahmadinejad grilled by Iran parliament

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Wednesday appeared before parliament for an inquiry into his economic and political policies, state news agency IRNA reported.

Ahmadinejad is the first president to be brought before parliament over his rule since the founding of the Islamic republic in 1979, said RIA Novosti.

The president was summoned to answer charges that he has mismanaged the nation’s economy, defied the country’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and attempted to loosen up Islamic rules on clothing for women and on gender relations.

CM Should Sack Them If Tainted Ministers Refuse To Quit

Assembly Speaker Nadendla Manohar on Tuesday adjourned the House for the day finally after two brief adjournments when the TDP members continued to stall the proceedings demanding sacking of six ministers who were served notices by the Supreme Court.

After the second adjournment, the House reassembled at 12.30 pm and immediately the TDP members rushed to the Speaker’s podium and exhibited placards demanding removal of six “corrupt” ministers from the cabinet.

Jealous Abu Dhabi wife packs off ‘pretty’ maid

An Arab housewife rushed back to a domestic service hiring office in Abu Dhabi and requested a replacement of her Filipina housemaid, fearing her husband could be attracted by her good looks.

The unnamed woman told the office that the maid she has just hired “pays too much attention to her appearance, cleanliness and make- up,” according to the Arabic language daily Alittihad.

“She told us that she does not want a housemaid of this type as her husband could be attracted to her,” the paper said, quoting the office’s manager Nuhad Al Laji.
