He may only be eight years old but Indonesian Adi Ilham has grabbed the world’s attention with his 25-a-day smoking habit.

The youngster, from Sukabumi, has dropped out of school because they have stopped him from smoking and, according to his parents, he becomes violent when they try to make him quit.

Andhra chief minister owns responsibility for Congress defeat

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy has owned up responsibility for the Congress party’s defeat in the by-elections to seven assembly seats.

The ruling party drew a blank in the by-elections, the results of which were announced Wednesday. The chief minister told reporters that the Congress party failed to take the government programmes to voters.

The chief minister felt that the party would learn new lessons from the defeat. He, however, said the cadre should not lose heart. He denied that there is lack of coordination between the government and the party.

Woman throws acid on face of lover

A married woman threw acid on the face of a man she was having an affair with as she suspected him of harbouring bad intentions towards her daughters in Madhya Pradesh’s Rewa district, police said Wednesday.

The woman, who was arrested, said she was having an affair with the man, Mohit Sondhilya but he was harbouring bad intentions towards her daughters.

Mohit, who got badly injured and is under treatment in Sanjay Gandhi Hospital, however, said that he had lent Rs.10,000 to the woman. When he went to take it, instead of giving the money back, she threw acid on his face.

In a setback to Andhra Pradesh’s ruling Congress, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) bagged four assembly seats while the YSR Congress and an independent won one seat each. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had a narrow lead on a seventh seat.

The by-elections to seven assembly seats, six of them in Telangana region, were held Sunday.

The elections were caused by vacancies that arose due to the resignations of two legislators of the Congress and four rebels of the TDP.

Violence in Kanpur after Samajwadi Party leader bullies youth to ‘suicide’

A Samajwadi Party leader is in the dock in Kanpur after he allegedly bashed up a youth in public, forcing him to end his life.

The suicide sparked violence in Kanpur as a mob clashed with police and set fire to the house and hotel of the SP leader, identified as Prashant, who allegedly tried to extort Rs.300 from the victim, Ankit Yadav.

Ankit was badly beaten up, after he refused to pay up. A badly bruised and publicly humiliated Ankit later committed suicide by hanging self.

13 school children killed as bus falls in canal (Lead)

In a ghastly accident, 13 school children were killed and 25 were injured when a private school bus fell into a canal in Andhra Pradesh’s Khammam district Tuesday, police said.

The accident took place near Tungaram in Chandragondu rpt Chandragondu mandal (block) in Khammam district, about 250 km from Hyderabad.

All the deceased are aged between 5 and 10 years. Seven of the bodies have so far been identified.

The injured were admitted to different hospitals and the condition of three of them is stated to be critical.

Case booked against Genelia

The Saifabad police on Monday registered a case against actor Genelia and five others following the directions of Nampally court.

The police issued an FIR against them under various Sections including Section 120(b) (criminal conspiracy), 420 (cheating), 406 (punishment for criminal breach of trust) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC.

The court direction came based on a complaint filed by one Tirupa-iah, a pensioner, that Anjaniputra Infrastructure Pvt. Ltd. and its directors had cheated him.

UP government reverses Mayawati’s police change

The Supreme Court on Monday sought feedback from the Nanavati Commission and the Gujarat Government on a plea asking the Commission to summon Chief Minister Narendra Modi for questioning in connection with the 2002 riots.

A bench of justices DK Jain and AK Dave issued notices to the Commission and the state government, asking them to file their responses within four weeks.
The bench’s order came on a plea by non-governmental organisation Jan Sangarsh Manch (JSM) of the Gujarat riot victims, after their plea was dismissed by the Gujarat High Court.

Rajdhani hits vehicle, no injury

The Dibrugarh-New Delhi Rajdhani Express tonight collided with a vehicle at an unmanned level crossing near Sahebpur Kamal railway station in Begusarai district.

The mishap took place when the vehicle got stuck at the railway line. There was no report of any injury, railway sources said. The train later left for its onward destination, they said, adding senior railway officials visited the spot.
