SP woos MP Muslims by choosing Saleem for Rajya Sabha

The Samajwadi Party (SP) which humbled the Congress in recent Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls by cornering majority of the Muslim votes, has offered an olive branch to the minority community in Madhya Pradesh by nominating Choudhary Munawwar Saleem of Vidisha to the Rajya Sabha from the neighbouring state.

“Certainly, it was courageous of SP President Mulayam Singh Yadav, as by doing so he has made an effort to attract the Muslim community towards it in Madhya Pradesh,” senior Congress leader and former Union Minister, Aslam Sher Khan told PTI.

Congress leader Renuka Choudary, who was declared elected to the Rajya Sabha, has claimed to be the daughter of the Telangana soil.

Talking to the media here on Saturday, Renuka said she came to New Delhi to thank party president Sonia Gandhi for selecting her for the Upper House of Parliament. She said all were her friends.

An estimated 240,000 Indian immigrants are among 11.5 million foreigners living illegally in the United States without proper immigration documents, according to latest official figures.

The flow of Indians coming clandestinely to the US has, in fact, doubled between 2000 and 2011, said the latest report by the US Department of Homeland Security.

During the same period the total number of illegal foreign immigrants increased from 8.46 million to 11.51 million.

Woman killed in fight over water

A fight between two women over water took an ugly turn after one of them poured kerosene on the other and set her on fire, killing her, police said Saturday.

The incident took place in Dhule district, around 400 km from here.

The victim, Kamalbai Jirase, 45, and the accused, Meena Koli, lived in adjoining rented rooms. On Thursday, they fought over filling water from a single tap in their locality, a police official told IANS.

“Suddenly Koli poured kerosene over Jirase and threw a lit matchstick on her. Jirase succumbed to her injuries Friday,” he added. Koli has been arrested.

Noted lawyer, vice president of Jamiatul Ulema Malegaon SS Shaikh dead

Advocate Shamsulhoda Shamsudoha Shaikh, noted lawyer, vice president of Jamiatul Ulema Malegaon and the man who had led the team of local advocates to get the accused in the 2006 Malegaon blast case released on bail died today evening in Malegaon. He was 67.

He was a cardiac patient and had underwent by-pass surgery and angioplasty in the past. He died today at around 06 in the evening, family sources said.

“He was not feeling well since last few months. But today he went to the mosque to offer Friday prayers”, the sources added.

‘India is a loser’, the Sri Lankan media proclaimed today in comments, a day after Colombo faced censure at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, saying New Delhi had failed to carry other South Asian nations with it on the issue.

“India has failed to carry Asia, or at least South Asia with it. In other words, Sri Lanka has won against India in Asia,” the pro-government newspaper Island commented in lead, screaming that India had joined US to defeat Lanka.

Govt employees to get 7 percent additional dearness allowance

The over four-million central government employees will go home with an increased pay packet from now, with the union cabinet Friday hiking the dearness allowance to 65 percent of the basic salary from the existing 58 percent with retrospective effect from Jan 1 this year.

The hike, about 7 percent from the present rates, will also be applicable to central government pensioners.

The increase in the allowances will cost the government exchequer Rs.7,474.53 crore annually, according to the decision taken at the cabinet meeting presided by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh here.

Classmates kidnap, murder 19-year-old in Delhi

There is shock and outrage in West Delhi’s Dwarka area over the killing of a 19-year-old schoolboy after he was kidnapped for ransom by his classmates.

Ashish, a Class XII student in a Dwarka public school, was lured on pretext of a birthday celebration among friends, and his soft drink was laced with a sedative. The kidnappers then called Ashish’s parents for ransom.

Meanwhile, Ashish fell unconscious and the kidnappers got nervous and killed him. The parents alerted the police who traced the call and arrested the kidnappers.

Husband stabs TV anchor, surrenders

A TV channel anchor was stabbed by her husband, in the presence of the police, when she went to his house to collect some of her things. He later surrendered at the Gandhi Nagar police station. The victim, Ms Swetha Reddy aka Meghana, 26, is a freelancer working with Studio N, a Telugu news channel. She had earlier lodged a complaint with the women’s police station, Central Crime Station, against her husband Nagender Reddy for allegedly harassing her for dowry.

Accepting four key recommendations of a Parliamentary panel, government has redrafted a bill on marriage laws which now seeks to give share to women in her husband’s property acquired after marriage and gives rights to adopted children on par with biological off springs. Man slapped by police for trying to register FIR

A man whose daughter was gang-raped by four men in Madhya Pradesh’s Shajapur district Thursday said that he was slapped by policemen when he tried to file a case at the local police station. An FIR was only registered after the local media intervened.

“I was told by policemen that no FIR could be registered against Gurjar community,” the man told reporters.

According to the victim, she was returning home from a fair, when four men — all her neighbours — came on a motorbike, put a handkerchief on her mouth and took her to an unknown place, where they raped here.

Congress leader seeks CBI probe against Andhra chief minister

In a dramatic development, Congress leader P. Shankar Rao has filed a petition in the Andhra Pradesh High Court seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe against Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy in what he described as the “red sander scam”.

The former minister also wants a probe against state Forest Minister S. Vijayarama Raju and 12 others, including top officials.

Red sander, found mostly in southern India, is a hard fragrant timber and is in huge demand in several countries.

Chiranjeevi, five others elected unopposed to Rajya Sabha

Telugu superstar K. Chiranjeevi and Congress party spokesperson Renuka Chowdary were among six candidates Thursday elected unopposed to Rajya Sabha from Andhra Pradesh.

Congress party’s Chiranjeevi, Chowdary, P.Goverdhan Reddy and R. Anand Bhaskar and Telugu Desam Party’s T. Devender Goud and C.M. Ramesh were all elected without a contest.

With the deadline for withdrawal of nominations coming to end Thursday evening, the legislature secretary and returning officer Raja Sadaram announced that all the six candidates were elected unopposed.
