Man contacts M15 to get estranged wife arrested

A man who tried to get his estranged wife arrested by emailing MI5 and claiming she had planted a bomb at a school was jailed for 16 months Thursday, a media report said.

Ghulam Kibria, 33, caused panic after he sent a chilling bomb threat to the security service’s website.

He pretended to be his wife when he clicked on the MI5 ‘contact us’ section of the site and wrote: ‘There is a bomb planted in Prince Albert Junior and Infant School in Aston.

“There is nothing you can do – we can strike anytime, anywhere.”

Man gets death for burning alive daughter-in-law

A man was awarded the death penalty by a court here Tuesday for burning alive his daughter-in-law in 2009. His son and daughter were awarded similar sentences.

Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Ramesh Kumar awarded death sentence to Gulbeg Ali, a resident of Gokulpuri in east Delhi, his son Zulfikar Ali and daughter Kumari Mubin Fatima for setting ablaze victim Shama Parveen in October 2009 in their house.

Parveen was married to Gulbeg Ali’s other son Sarfraz.

The court also fined the convicts Rs.5,000 each.

Banerjee announces sops for Muslims, honorarium for Imams

Raising the pitch for next year’s panchayat elections in West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Tuesday announced pro-minority sops including a monthly honorarium for Imams.

“The government wants to give a monthly honorarium of Rs. 2,500 to Imams of the state which will be paid through the state Wakf Board.

“For the purpose a special task force comprising government officials and Imams from the city and districts will be constituted which will make the necessary recommendations for the implementation of the scheme,” Banerjee said here during a meet with the religious leaders.

12 Andhra students hospitalized after corporal punishment

In another shocking incident of corporal punishment, a woman teacher in Andhra Pradesh’s Nellore district severely punished 12 girl students who had to be hospitalized.

The incident took place Tuesday at Gudur town in Nellore district, about 400 km from here.

According to police, the teacher at a government-run school lost her cool when the class 7 students did not recite an English poem. She asked them to do 150 sit-ups. As many as 12 students collapsed after doing some sit-ups and had to be rushed to a local hospital.

I Don’t Give Importance to MNS: Uddhav Thackeray

Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray has said that he does not give importance to the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, started by cousin Raj Thackeray, and neither do the people.

“I don’t give much importance to MNS, neither do the people…What matters at the end of the day is the work one does, not what analysts say,” Uddhav said, in an interview with the New York Times.

A 38-year-old Sikkimese was among the seven killed by a disgruntled college student who carried out an execution type killing spree in a religious college in California that also left an Indian-American girl injured.

Tshering Rinzing Bhutia, 38, of San Francisco, was killed when the gunman stole his car outside the school yesterday morning.

Bhutia was born in Sikkim and lived alone in San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood and worked nights cleaning terminals in city’s airport, Oakland Tribune reported.

A Canadian university professor converted to Islam in Saudi Arabia, saying he had found a completely different religion from what is depicted in the West.

David Woelke, an English language teacher at King Abdul Aziz University in the western Red Sea port of Jeddah, converted to Islam amidst applause and chanting by the audience at an Islamic conference in the city.

14-year-old girl gangraped, four arrested

According to police, the victim, who is studying in class 9 had gone to borrow a notebook from her friend on Friday afternoon, when four youths came in an autorickshaw and abducted her.

They took her to a secluded place and raped the girl. Following this, they threatened the girl of dire consequences if she revealed the incident to anyone, and then let her off near her house, police said.

SpiceJet flight grounded due to technical snag

A Hyderabad-bound SpiceJet aircraft was grounded at Gannavaram Airport due to last minute detection of a technical sang, here today.

Airport Director Pattabhi told UNI that the pilot of the flight, which was scheduled to take off at 0830 hrs, noticed a technical snag when the aircraft was about to take off.

The flight was immediately grounded and the passengers were sent to Hyderabad by another flight.

The flight was being repaired and would take off as soon as the technical trouble is rectified, the Director said.

Bibi Jagir Kaur jailed for role in daughter’s kidnapping

Senior Punjab minister Bibi Jagir Kaur has been arrested and sent to jail after being held guilty of conspiracy in the mysterious death of her daughter in April 2000. However, the court dropped murder charges against her.

A court in Patiala on Friday sentenced Jagir Kaur, minister for rural water supply and sanitation and defence services, to five years rigorous imprisonment.

She has resigned “on moral grounds” from the government that has just been re-elected to power.

TDP leader and former minister Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy has questioned why YSR Congress president Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy was not arrested though his name was mentioned as the first accused in the charge-sheet of the illegitimate assets case

Talking to the media here on Sunday, Somireddy expressed fears that he would tamper with evidence if he was not arrested immediately. He also alleged that the names of big companies that had indulged in irregularities were also not mentioned in the charge-sheet.

Rasthrapati Bhawan observes Earth Hour

The Rashtrapati Bhawan saved a total of 550 units as President Pratibha Patil and the House staff observed the Earth hour by switching off lights of the sprawling estate.

Patil also turned off the lights and instead used candles in her study and dining hall in order to save power to mark the Earth Hour which was observed across the globe for an hour from 2030 hours, a Rashtrapati Bhawan spokesperson said.

A total of 550 units were saved during the one hour event, the spokesperson added.

Women take longer to deliver babies today than they did 50 years ago, according to an analysis of nearly 140,000 deliveries, conducted by researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Researchers compared data on deliveries in the early 1960s to data gathered in the early 2000s. They found that the first stage of labour had increased by 2.6 hours for first-time mothers.

The exhibition opened on 26 January and runs until 15 April.
