Bukhari Demands 3 SP Tickets in UP Council

Accusing Samajwadi Party of ignoring the Muslim community, Shahi Imam of the Delhi Jama Masjid has rejected the party’s legislative council ticket for his son-in-law, saying at least three Muslims should be given representation in the UP council on SP ticket.

Bukhari yesterday shot off a letter to Mulayam saying he did not want party ticket for his son-in-law Umar Khan.

Bukhari had supported the party during UP assembly elections.

Out of seven seats, Bukhari wants at least three for the Muslim community.

Was Told to Leave Pak But Did Not: Zardari

Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari today said that he was asked to leave the country but he had refused to do so.

“I was told to leave the country and that a plane was ready but I refused as I am not a weak-hearted man like others,” Zardari said while talking to a group of journalists and lawyers at the Governor’s House.

He did not say who had asked him to leave the country or when the demand was made.

“I told them that I would instead get an FIR registered against such elements,” he said.

Rahul, Bilawal have much to share

Rahul Gandhi and Bilawal Zardari Bhutto, two scions whose respective pasts have uncanny similarities, are expected to talk at Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s lunch here Sunday for Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari.

Informed sources said Bilawal, who took over as Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chairman at age 19 after the assassination of his mother and former prime minister Benazir Bhutto in 2007, figures in the guest list.

Obama’s secret message: Iran can have civilian n-programme

In a secret message sent through a foreign leader to Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, US President Barack Obama hinted that Tehran can have a civilian nuclear programme if it never pursues a nuclear weapon, a media report said.

“President Obama has signalled Iran that the United States would accept an Iranian civilian nuclear programme if Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei can back up his recent public claim that his nation ‘will never pursue nuclear weapons’,” the usually authoritative Washington Post reported.

PM urged to help Pakistani Hindu refugees

The Seemant Lok Sangathan (SLS) Saturday submitted a memorandum to the prime minister’s office and drew attention to the alleged religious persecution of Hindus in Pakistan.

RJD supremo Lalu Prasad today said Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and his Bihar counterpart Nitish Kumar are like “cousins” on communal issues.

“Both Modi and Kumar are like cousin brothers in relation to communal matters,” Prasad told reporters here.

He made this sarcastic remark when his attention was drawn to media reports suggesting that the international Time magazine report, under compilation now, will be presenting Modi and Prasad among top four influential personalities in India.

“Both Modi and Kumar are holding communal flags,” Lalu alleged.

CBI Extends Janardhana Reddy’s Judicial Custody

A CBI court today extended till April 17 judicial custody of former Karnataka Minister and mining baron G Janardhana Reddy and his personal assistant Mehfuz Ali Khan, arrested in connection with an illegal mining case.

Additional Civil and Sessions Court Judge and CBI special court judge B M Angadi passed the order after CBI moved an application seeking extension of custody.

Associated Mining Corporation and Deccan Mining Syndicate owned by Reddy and his wife Aruna Lakshmi have been facing probe over charges of illegal mining.

Woman throws children in well, kills self

A woman allegedly threw her three daughters aged between 1 and 5 years into a well and then committed suicide by consuming poison in Rajasthan, police said Friday.

According to police, the incident took place in Taranagar area in Churu district, some 200 km from here.

The woman, Indra Devi is believed to have committed suicide over frequent family feuds. “It is suspected that she threw her three daughters, Manisha, 6, Aaina, 4, and Babali, 1, into the well and then consumed poison. A bottle of pesticide was recovered lying near Indra’s body,” said a police officer.

Modi Flags Off BJP’s Kishan Yatra

Seemingly unperturbed by his depiction as Lord Krishna in a BJP advertisement in a local newspaper, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi today flagged off the “Kishan Yatra” aimed at welfare of farmers from here.

Targetting the Centre for being “insensitive” towards farmers and being “anti-Gujarat”, Modi said the policies like banning export of cotton have affected farmers from the state to a great extent.

Modi was most vocal to protest against the ban imposed by the Centre on export of cotton, which was later withdrawn.

The Shahi Imam of the Jama Masjid, who had earlier extended support to Samajwadi Party, today accused the party of ignoring the Muslim community while choosing nominees for Rajya Sabha and State Legislative Council.

Bukhari, in a letter written today to SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, has said that he had learnt from newsreports that his own son-in-law was among seven who had been nominated to the State Legislative Council.

Ignoring opposition protests, Andhra transfers police official

Ignoring protests by opposition parties and objection by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) chief, the Congress government in Andhra Pradesh Friday went ahead with the transfer of a police official who was probing a liquor pay-off scandal allegedly involving some ministers.

A couple of hours after the opposition parties asked Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy to revoke the transfer of ACB additional director Srinivas Reddy, the officer was relieved of his post and asked to take charge of inspector general of coastal security.

Cong Fumes at Depiction of Modi as Lord Krishna

Kicking up a controversy, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has been depicted as Lord Krishna in a BJP advertisement published in a vernacular newspaper today.

The advertisement put up by BJP’s Amreli district unit President Bharat Kamdar evoked criticism from the Congress which alleged that Modi is resorting to this practice to win elections. Assembly polls in Gujarat are due towards the end of this year.

The Shahi Imam of Delhi’s Jama Masjid, Syed Ahmed Bukhari, Friday asked Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav to revoke the legislative council ticket of his son-in-law Umar Khan.

Accusing the Samajwadi Party of not paying enough heed to Muslims, Bukhari, in a one-page letter, also slammed senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan for his “unsavoury remarks”.

Pointing out that he had not sought any ticket for his son-in-law, Bukhari asked Mulayam Singh Yadav to “seriously and honestly work for the welfare of Muslims instead”.

Andhra opposition protests transfer of official probing liquor scandal

Opposition parties in Andhra Pradesh Friday asked Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy to revoke the transfer of a police official who was probing the liquor pay-off scandal allegedly involving some ministers.

A delegation of leaders of Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Communist Party of India (CPI) and Lok Satta called on the chief minister and urged him to defer the order at least till the official submits his report to the state high court on the status of the investigations.

Can’t act against Saeed without evidence: Pakistan

Pakistan cannot take action against Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT)chief Hafiz Saeed in the absence of solid evidence, the foreign ministry said Thursday.

The US Monday announced an award of up to $10 million for information leading to arrest and conviction of Saeed and $2 million for Hafiz Adbul Rahman Makki, under the Rewards for Justice programme, for information on the two terrorists.

Saeed is the founder of the LeT that was blamed for the 2008 Mumbai attacks.
