IAF keen on US’ C-17 aircraft for heavylift transport

New Delhi, June 16: Keen on replacing its ageing Russian IL-76 transport aircraft fleet, the Indian Air Force has shortlisted US major Boeing’s C-17 Globemaster III for its heavylift aircraft.

“The C-17s have been shortlisted after IAF carried out a thorough study on its capability to take-off and land on short runways with heavy loads,” IAF sources said here on Tuesday.

IAF would place an initial order for 10 of the C-17s through the US government’s Foreign Military Sales (FMS) route, and may later go in for a follow-on order, sources said.

Govt. doesn’t agree fully with Pradhan panel report: CM

Mumbai, June 16: The Maharashtra Government does not agree fully with the Ram Pradhan committee report on 26/11 terror attacks, Chief Minister Ashok Chavan said here on Tuesday.

“The government does not fully agree with the report.

In the action to be taken report tabled in the Legislature on Tuesday, we have indicated areas where we don’t agree with the panel’s findings,” Mr. Chavan told reporters at Vidhan Bhawan.

Jaitley resigns as BJP general secretary

New Delhi, June 16I: Amid turmoil in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over its poll debacle, Arun Jaitley has resigned as its general secretary, though the party maintained Tuesday he was only following the one-man-one-post tradition.

But speculation was rife that the party had made his resignation public now in a bid to pre-empt trouble at the meeting of the national executive, slated for June 20-21, with several party seniors insisting that responsibility be fixed for the poll defeat.

Mir Mohtesham to flex muscles at Mr Universe

Hyderabad boy down with swine flu, total now 31

Hyderabad, June 16: A nine-year-old boy who arrived here from the US is infected with swine flu, health authorities confirmed. This takes the number of A(H1N1) flu cases in Hyderabad to 13 and in India to 31.

The boy, who arrived by a British Airways flight from New Jersey two days ago, has been quarantined at the Andhra Pradesh Chest Hospital, the nodal centre to deal with swine flu cases.

Doctors at the hospital said the New Delhi-based National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) Tuesday confirmed that the boy’s samples were infected with the swine flu virus.

India for screening of outbound passengers in US

New Delhi, June 16: Worried after another fresh case of swine flu cropped up, of a nine-year-old boy who arrived from the US, the Indian government Tuesday said there should be “some kind of screening” in the US for outbound travellers as most of the infection cases in India have come from that country.

The number of confirmed cases stands at 31.

The boy, who arrived in Hyderabad two days ago by a British Airways flight from New Jersey, has been quarantined at the Andhra Pradesh Chest Hospital, the nodal centre to deal with influenza A(H1N1) cases.

Manmohan Singh asks Zardari to act against terror

Yekaterinburg (Russia), June 16: In the first top-level contact since the Mumbai terror attacks, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday met President Asif Ali Zardari here during which he is understood to have made it clear that Pakistan should take concrete action against terrorism directed against India.

VHP alleges that Gujarat police taps their phones

Ahmedabad, June 16: Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has alleged that Gujarat police is tapping the phones of its office-bearers including Dr Pravin Togadia, general secretary of the body.

Jimmy Carter visits Hamas-run Gaza Strip

Gaza Strip, June 16: Former US president Jimmy Carter was visiting the Hamas-run Gaza Strip on Tuesday, after urging Israel to lift a blockade on the Palestinian enclave and stop treating its residents like “savages.”

Carter was due to meet officials from the Islamist Hamas movement that runs the territory and which is considered a terrorist organisation by Israel and the West.

He is expected to pass on a letter from the parents of Gilad Shalit, an Israeli soldier that Gaza militants, including Hamas, seized in a cross-border raid almost three years ago, and who remains in captivity.

Hyderabad, June 16: Adding to the woes of health officials, 13th case of H1N1 influenza has been confirmed in Andhra Pradesh taking the total number of those affected with this deadly disease in India to 31. A nine-year-old child who arrived from New Jersey on a British Airways flight has tested positive for swine flu.

Also, two more suspected cases of swine flu have been detected in Jalandhar and the samples have been sent to Delhi.

Dubai, June 16: Outraged Palestinians have called for legal action against a prominent Israeli comedian after a guest on his talk show launched a scathing tirade against Muslims and compared them to cockroaches.

In an attempt at humor, a guest on Israel’s “Tonight with Lior Shlein” mocked the way Muslims pray and to the audience’s delight likened the way they looked when in prostration to a penis.

The guest continued his jibe to cheers and applause and went on to compare Muslims to cockroaches.
