Minister urged to drop charges against officials

Hyderabad, August 03: The officials alleged to have been responsible for the Bholakpur water pollution case might go scot-free. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS SB) Engineers Association today urged minister for municipal administration urban development Anam Ramnarayana Reddy to take up action for dropping of criminal cases registered against the Water Board officials.

‘Good future for Indian drug firms’

Hyderabad, August 03: “Scientists of research and development (R D) departments in pharmaceutical and drug manufacturing companies should strive to discover new medicines for all kinds of diseases for the benefit of the common man,” said Prof Oliver Reiser, a German scientist involved in chemical technology research.

Telangana suicides force TRS to rework strategy

Hyderabad, August 02: Even while celebrating the resounding victory in the recent bypolls, the TRS seems to be nagged by one worry the continuing suicides of students and youths for the cause of Telangana.

After the December 9 developments, several heartbroken students and youths ended their lives in the region. Since then, whenever the issue flared up it led to suicides somewhere in the region.

Venkaiah wants UPA to introduce Telangana bill

Hyderabad, August 02: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) senior leader and Rajya Sabha member M Venkaiah Naidu has warned that the Congress would face another miserable defeat in 2014 general elections if it does not deliver Telangana state.

The BJP leader has demanded that the Congress-led UPA government should introduce a bill in Parliament for creation of a separate state without wasting time.

Amani’s sister-in-law agrees to out-of-court set

Nellore, August 02: In a complete reversal of her stance, Leelavathi, who cried foul over her husband Srinivas (brother of popular actress Amani) and lodged a dowry harassment case against him, reportedly agreed to an out-of-court settlement.

Amani’s husband Khaja Mohinuddin, a film producer and distributor, who had initially failed to make Leelavathi withdraw the case against his wife and the rest of the family, reportedly succeeded in convincing Leelavathi and her father.

Cops encircle Maoist leader

Hyderabad, August 02: Maoist central committee leader Varanasi Subramanyam is said to have been ‘encircled’ by the police and Maoist sympathisers are fearing harm to him by the police. Virasam member Vara Vara Rao said Subramanyam alias Suraj alias Srikanth alias Sukanth was encircled by police somewhere near Delhi. “We have specific information that Subramanyam is encircled by the police though we don’t know the exact location. It is possible he is in Delhi as he operates mostly in North India,” Vara Vara Rao told Express over telephone.

Buoyed by good rains, State sets record target

Hyderabad, August 02: The government has set an ambitious target of achieving 208 lakh ton of foodgrain production this year, four lakh ton more than the yield in 200809.

Copious rains all over the state and steady progress in agriculture activity are the reasons behind the ambitious plans.

Expressing his happiness over the farm operations that are in full swing, chief minister K Rosiah said, “Encouraged by the favourable monsoon, the state government is now hopeful of bettering the previous record of 204 lakh metric ton foodgrain production in 2008 and reaching 208 LMTs.”

Another Telangana youth threatens suicide

Warangal, August 02: A day after the suicide of an engineering graduate on the OU campus for the cause of separate Telangana, another youngster sent the police and politicians into a tizzy by climbing a high-rise cell tower and threatening to jump down.

He demanded that the Congress legislator from Warangal (East) should resign and fight for Telangana. It took nearly four hours for police, student leaders of the Kakatiya University JAC, TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao, K Taraka Rama Rao and the boy’s father to convince him to come down without harming himself.

PCC chief to review bypoll results

Hyderabad, August 02: After the defeat, now it is time for looking at reasons. PCC chief D Srinivas will confer with the candidates who lost the byelections in Telangana districts, ministers who were made in charge for all the 12 constituencies and the three AICC observes tomorrow at 11 a.m. Gandhi Bhavan. As a prelude to tomorrow’s meeting, a few MPs and CLP leader and minister J Geetha Reddy met Srinivas and discussed the by poll verdict in the morning. After the meeting, Geetha Reddy said there was no need to replace Srinivas since “nothing worked in the face of strong sentiment.”

Eshan Reddy’s ‘suicide’ case shifted to CCS

Hyderabad, August 02: The ‘suicide’ case of P Eshan Reddy, an engineering graduate who ended his life on the Osmania University campus yesterday for separate Telangana, was transferred to the Central Crime Station (CCS) for further probe.

Though police could recover a suicide note, purportedly written by Eshan Reddy at the spot, they want to investigate if there was any foul play behind the youngster’s death.

E Rajendar elected TRSLP leader

Hyderabad, August 02: E Rajendar has been reelected as the Telangana Rashtra Samithi Legislature Party (TRSLP) Leader here today. The newly-elected TRS MLAs met at Telangana Bhavan under the chairmanship of party chief K Chandrasekhar Rao.

The meeting elected the new body for the TRSLP. The meeting was attended by 10 MLAs out 11.

Yellareddy MLA E Ravindhar Reddy could not attend the meeting for personal reasons.

Forest conservator objects to Sompet power plant

Hyderabad, August 02: The regional chief conservator of forests, Bangalore, has objected to the location of the 2×660 MW (phase-I) super critical coal-based thermal plant in Sompet mandal in Srikakulam district.

He inspected the site today.

Chief conservator K S Reddy was mandated by the ministry of environment and forests to inspect the area after keeping the environment clearance for the thermal plant in abeyance, honouring public sentiment against the location of the project by the NCC Power Projects Limited.

The prospect of a separate Telangana has started gaining momentum and this is feared to make buyers postpone buying property, hoping that prices might fall. Tiger attacks continue in Tirupati

Tirupati, August 02: Thanks to the lax attitude of forest officials, attacks by tigers on humans are increasing day-by-day in the hill shrine of Lord Venkateshwara in Tirupati.

Kalyani, an eight-year-old girl, hailing from Penchulapadu near Guntakal in Anantapur district, was injured in a tiger attack on the wee hours of Sunday when she was heading towards Tirumala on footpath near 45th Mile point.

The girl was rushed to Ruia Hospital by passersby where she was declared out of danger.

No link between defeat and anti-separatist stand of Seemandhra leaders: JC

Anantapur, August 02: Former minister JC Diwakar Reddy on Sunday stated that there is no link between the party losing heavily in the by-elections and the anti-bifurcation stance taken by the Seemandhra Congress leaders.

Talking to media persons, Mr Diwakar Reddy the main reason behind the defeat of the Congress party was the strong Telangana sentiment. He said that the voters saw the candidates who resigned from the Assembly seats as martyrs and voted overwhelmingly for them.

Seemandhra leaders need to work harder: Rayapati

Guntur, August 02: Guntur Member of Parliament Rayapati Sambashiva Rao on Sunday said that Congress leaders from Rayalaseema and Andhra Pradesh will represent before the Srikrishna Committee and submit their opinions on the bifurcation of the state.

Talking to media persons, Mr Sambashiva said that it has become all the more important for Seemandhra leaders to present their opinion about the future of the state after the results of the recent by-elections in Telangana region.

HC asks CS to submit AT R on allotment of houses

Hyderabad, July 31: A division bench of the AP High Court comprising Justice G Raghuram and Justice Ramesh Ranganathan on Friday granted two weeks time to the chief secretary to submit an ATR on the construction and allotment of 70 houses under the Indiramma Housing scheme in a green belt area at Pendurti in Visakhapatnam. The bench is dealing with a writ petition filed by Vennela Sanyasi Naidu challenging the allotment as being in violation of the master-plan and zoning regulations.

AP Congress chief down in the dumps

Hyderabad, July 31: AP Congress Committee president D Srinivas has gone down like a Goliath in the by-election to the Nizamabad Urban constituency.

BJP’s Y Lakshminarayana romped home with a majority of about 11,000 votes, riding on the crest of the Telangana wave and dumping Srinivas in history’s dustbin.

Srinivas’ poll drubbing, the second in less than 15 months as PCC chief, appears to have sealed his career. His promise of delivering Telangana on a golden platter failed to cut ice with the electorate.

‘Murder’ trail leads to sheep’s carcass

Hyderabad, July 31: A team of experts – cops, revenue officials, doctors and a videographer – who were on a mission to exhume the body of a suspected murder victim for an on-the-spot autopsy were shocked out of their wits when their excavation brought out not a human body but the carcass of a sheep! The incident happened near Debbadaguda under the Kandukur police station limits today.

Hard work pays off for Harish Rao

Sangareddy, July 31: Much effort went into Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) leader T Harish Rao’s victory by 95,000 votes in Siddipet.

Ever since he quit the Assembly along with other TRS legislators, Harish Rao had set his eyes on surpassing former chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy’s record of a 65,000-vote majority.

Harish Rao knew pretty well he would win the seat as the Telangana sentiment was strong. But he was not happy with just winning. He wanted to create a record. His aim was to cross the 80,000 mark but voters in Siddipet gave him a bonus today.

Law soon to check water wastage in command areas

Hyderabad, July 31: Major irrigation minister P Laxmaiah said that a law would be brought soon to prevent water wastage in command areas. An ordinance would be issued, if necessary, to implement the rule immediately, he said.

Briefing newsmen after a review meeting here today, Laxmaiah said water from the Nagaruna Sagar project was being released for 170 days against the needed 120- 130 days causing shortage of 50-80 tmc every year.
