ATM gang kills unarmed guard

Hyderabad, November 16: An unarmed private security guard manning an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) of the State Bank of India at Chandrayangutta was killed by miscreants in the early hours of Sunday. The miscreants could not lay their hands on the cash as they could not break open the ATM. But they did damage one of the chambers of the machine.

20% of licensed gun owners yet to deposit arms

Hyderabad, November 16: At least 20 per cent of licensed gunholders in Hyderabad commissionerate limits have not deposited their weapons with the police though they have been asked to do so in view of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections on November 23.

Meanwhile, 700 history-sheeters were bound over (surrendering and reporting at a police station) out of the existing 1,000. Most of the history-sheeters are from the South Zone (Old City) in Hyderabad, according to police reports.

Yoga gives them a new lease of life

Hyderabad, November 16: Some of the health conscious senior citizens of the city got a new lease of life when they took matters of health in their hands and started yoga classes.

Celebrating the two years of their yoga centre – Star Yoga Point – many of the members are already heading towards a healthy and long life.
The classes that began on October 2007 in the Imliban Park and ever since then over a 100 members have been attending the classes daily from 6 to 7 in the morning.

Five killed in explosion in Andhra house

Hyderabad, November 16: Five people were killed and 20 injured as explosives stored illegally in a house went off in Andhra Pradesh’s Guntur district Monday, police said.

The accident occurred in Narayanpur of Guntur district, about 300 km from here.

Four houses were destroyed in the massive explosion. Officials said the death toll might go up as six of the injured are said to be in a critical condition.

The blast occurred in gelatine sticks stored illegally in the house of a businessman, who used to sell them to mine owners in the district.

Five newborn babies die in hospital in Vijayawada

Hyderabad, November 16: Five newborn babies on Sunday night died under mysterious circumstances in the infants’ ward of a hospital in Vijayawada, around 300 kms from Hyderabad, triggering protest by their parents.

Doctors at the old government general hospital claimed three babies died a natural death and enquiry is on to ascertain the cause of the death of the other two infants.

Meanwhile, parents of the deceased alleged that the babies died due to failure of incubators and the central oxygen system.

Kalam calls for poverty eradication by 2020

Hyderabad, November 15: Former president APJ Abdul Kalam has called for a progressive reduction in the number of people below poverty line in a phased manner and be brought to zero by 2020.

He was addressing senior officers of the Higher Defence Management Course at the College of Defence Management here today.

Kalam expressed the hope that with the continued impetus to economy, India could realise at least 10 per cent growth rate in the next ten years. The results of economic liberalisation and growth measures being initiated by the government were beginning to show now, he said.

YSR Abhaya hastham pension for 2.7 lakh women in 15 days: CM

Hyderabad, November 15:The Chief Minister, Mr K Rosaiah, on Sunday instructed officials of Rural Development and Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) to ensure that the Abhaya Hastham Pension should be in the hands of all eligible women by the first day of every month from December.

The Chief Minister reviewed the progress of the scheme, “Dr. YSR Abhaya Hastham” telephonically with the Minister for Rural Development, Mr. Vatti Vasantha Kumar and senior officials of the Department, Mr R. Subramaniam, Mr T. Vijaya Kumar and Mr. Rajasekhar at his residence.

Lok Satta seeks relaxation on polling agents’ appointment

Hyderabad, November 15:The Lok Satta Party today requested the State Election Commission (SEC) to relax its mandate that a contestant’s agent in a polling station should be a registered voter in the same polling station area. It also sought permission to appoint men as polling agents in polling stations meant exclusively for women.

In a representation on behalf of the Lok Satta Party, Mr. Bheesetti Babji, Mr. V. Laxman Balaji brought to the SEC notice that its instruction that polling agents should belong to the same polling station area favors entrenched parties and candidates.

VHP demands law to ban cow slaughter

Vijayawada, November 14: Vishwa Hindu Parishad today demanded from the Centre to enact a law to protect the cows in the country by banning their slaughter.

Addressing a public meeting here today, VHP general secretary Praveen Togadia asked as to why the Congress-led government at the Centre was not bringing a law to ban cow slaughter.

Nowadays, farmers are unable to meet the higher maintenance of cows and ultimately, they are selling them away to slaughter houses, Togadia said demanding corporal punishement to those who kill cows.

Cop attacks wife with acid

Nizamabad, November 13: In a shocking incident, a head constable attacked his wife with acid in full public glare at Armoor RTC bus stand in Nizamabad district Thursday. The head constable followed the woman from a court in Karimnagar and attacked her when the bus in which she was travelling stopped at the depot.

The head constable of Bikkanoor police station, 48-year Gyan Singh, married 22-year Chintola Rajani a year ago. Gyan Singh was married earlier and he had two sons and a daughter.

Panel gives clean chit to Nellore eye hospital

Hyderabad, November 13: The three-member committee constituted by the government to look into the botched cataract surgeries at the Bollineni Eye Hospital & Research Centre in Nellore has given a clean chit to the surgeons and paramedical staff who conducted the operations.

“Prima facie, the enquiry did not establish negligence on the part of either the surgeons or paramedical staff of the hospital in conducting surgeries or in sterilising the equipment used for the surgery,’’ the committee said in a report filed before the AP State Human Rights Commission (APSHRC).

3 medicos get year in jail for ragging

Vijayawada, November 13: Probably for the first time in the State and after the enactment of the Anti-Ragging Act, a local court on Thursday sentenced three students to one-year imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 on each in a ragging case dating back to 2007.

14,000 junior doctors go on strike across State

Hyderabad, November 13: Patients at the Government hospitals across the State suffered the most with junior doctors boycotting their duties demanding hike in their stipend.

Medical and health services including out-patient, ward and Arogyasri services were paralysed forcing many patients to return home even as talks between the State Government and the medicos failed again.

Seshadri to move SC

Tirumala, november 12: P Seshadri alias `Dollar Seshadri’ is planning to file a writ petition in the Supreme Court challenging the interim orders of the AP High Court dismissing his extension orders as Officer on Special Duty (OSD).

According to sources, he held discussions with his advocates in Hyderabad and it was decided that he should challenge the interim orders of the High Court.

Panel begins probe into OMC activities

I will be CM one day: Jagan

Kadapa, November 12: Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy believes and, strongly too, that he would become the chief minister of the Andhra Pradesh one day. ‘‘It may not happen today (immediately), it may not happen in a year or even two. TRS ends stir against Andhra ‘settlement’

Sangareddy, November 11: The `Andhra walo bhago’ agitation, launched by the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) yesterday with much fanfare at Bapannapalle in Medak district, ended today with officials of the revenue department assuring the agitators that an inquiry and survey of the lands allegedly occupied by Andhra settlers at Lakshminagar village would be conducted.

TRS leaders and workers stayed up throughout the night at the MRO office demanding that the occupants of the land be evicted the land the land be distributed to the SCs to whom it had been assigned.

Tribal girl ends life at welfare hostel

Adilabad, November 11: A Class IX student of a tribal welfare residential school committed suicide at Utnoor mandal headquarters on Monday night prompting the authorities to suspend the hostel warden, headmistress and a watchman.

Chawhan Bindu (14), daughter of a farmer from the tribal village of Mamidipalli in Jainoor mandal, jumped into the hostel well. What drove her to the extreme step remains a mystery.

Armed forces will be strengthened: Pallam Raju

Kakinada, November 11: Union Minister of State for Defence MM Pallam Raju has said that all the armed forces–Army, Navy and Air Force– would be strengthened. About 45 percent of the Defence budget of Rs 1.42 lakh crore would be spent on modernisation of the Services, he added.

Addressing a press conference here today, he said that latest facilities like infrared night vision capability for enhanced vision and fire control facilities would be added to the armed forces vehicles. The technology was being taken from Belarus, he added.

7 Maoists killed near AP border

Bhadrachalam, November 11: Seven Maoists were killed on Tuesday in an exchange of fire with the police at Kistapuram forest region in Chhattisgarh, 10 km from the Andhra border.

According to information reaching here, the Andhra and Chhattisgarh police, who were searching the area as part of Operation Green Hunt, received intelligence inputs that the Maoists were assembling at a certain location in the forest.

TTD to file counter affidavit

Tirumala, November 11: P Seshadri, popularly known as `dollar Seshadri’, Officer on Special Duty (OSD) at Tirumala temple did not attend to his duties today.

“I came to know that there is a PIL against my appointment as the temple OSD. But, I have not received any information from the TTD officials in this regard. But I am not attending duty,’’ he said.

“I will obey the orders of the TTD Trust Board. In fact, I never asked the Board or any TTD official to extend my service. The Board asked me to continue and hence I am rendering my services,’’ he clarified.
