Bandh over police action evokes partial response in AP towns

Hyderabad, February 26:A bandh called today in two towns of Andhra Pradesh’s Srikakulam district protesting the caning and firing of rubber bullets on people opposing the construction of a thermal power plant evoked partial response.

The shutdown in Tekkali and Somapeta towns evoked partial response with only a few shops and business establishments remaining closed, police said.

28 new trains for SCR in Railway budget

HYderabad, February 26: After a wait of several years, the South Central Railway (SCR) has at last got a good deal in the Budget.

In all, 28 new services, including a Doronto, a Shatabdi and seven express trains have been sanctioned, against 21 new trains last year.

The Doronto, a tri-weekly superfast train, will run between Visakhapatnam and Secunderabad while the Shatabdi will connect Pune and Secunderabad.

Exchange mela from today

Kakinada, February 26: The Aarush Motors, dealer of Mahindra two-wheelers, is conducting a mega exchange mela of motorcycles in the city for three days from Saturday.

The mela will be held on the firm’s premises beside Apollo Hospitals on the Main Road. The firm is offering exchange subvention and free insurance, besides displaying the models ‘Duro,’ ‘Rodeo,’ ‘Flyte’ and ‘Stallio’ of the Mahindra, according to its general manager Md. Tajuddin.

Mamata blesses Medak once again

Sangareddy, February 26: Medak district was blessed once again by Union Railway Mamata Banerjee with announcing proposal for survey between Patancheru-Adilabad and Secunderabad– Karimnagar via Siddipet.

This would benefit the district to link the industrial areas like Kallakal and Patancheru to link with national transport network. Similarly, towns like Gajwel, Siddipet, Sangareddy, Jogipet and Medak would also be linked with the railway lines.

Provide desks to students writing SSC exam, JC tells officials

Chittoor, February 26: Joint Collector Pradhyumna has instructed Education Department officers to provide desks to students for writing SSC examination without making them to sit on floor. A meeting of the officers concerned was held here on Friday. He asked the officers to procure desks from nearby high schools.

The Joint Collector also asked Transco officials to provide uninterrupted power during the examination hours and RTC officials to run buses for students writing the examination.

British citizen helps MFI victims

Sangareddy, February 26: A British citizen, Mr. Steve, residing in a North American country donated US $ 1,000 to families of persons who committed suicide unable to repay the loans they had taken from micro finance institutions (MFIs).

After going through the reports on the Internet about the suicides in Andhra Pradesh, he contacted a reporter in the district headquarters and sent the money. A charitable trust – (Remilla Suryakantam and Annavadhanulu Charitable and Education Trust -) chipped in with Rs. 6,000 making it a round figure of Rs. 50,000.

Fee reimbursement will take a few more days: Botcha

Arrangements in place for pulse polio

Vizianagaram, February 26: Arrangements have been made for the second phase of pulse polio programme on February 27, 28 and March 1 and it is targeted to cover 2,63,963 children in the age group of 0-5 years in the district.

IT exports from Andhra to double

Hyderabad, February 25: Even as the uncertainty over separate statehood persists, the IT & ITES sector are multiplying their growth prospects in the state, according to I&T minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah.

“Software exports from the state have grown multifold over the past few years from about few hundred crores to more than `30,000 crore,” he said. IT exports from AP are set to be doubled to about `36,000 crore for the financial year ending 2010-11 from `18,000 crore registered last fiscal. As of December 2010 exports stood at `25,000 crore.

‘Telangana movement not against Andhras’

Hyderabad, February 25: Former director of the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology PM Bhargava has appealed to the central government to introduce a bill on Telangana in the current session of Parliament .

In an open letter to prime minister Manmohan Singh, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and leaders of all political parties, the copies of which were released to the press here today, he said that since the Telangana movement reached a point of no return, the centre cannot go back on the promise it had made on the statehood demand.

6 ‘killer’ siblings held for triple murder

Guntur, February 25: The Pattabhipuram police arrested a gang of six hired killers. They included Padarthi Kasaiah, Suresh, Sudhakar, Mudamala Samson, Ramesh and Madhu of Karlapadu village in Piduguralla mandal.

According to SP A Ravichandra, all the arrested are brothers. Ramesh and Madhu were accused in the murder of Malladi Srinu of Swarna Bharati Nagar earlier.
