PG medical counselling postponed

Vijayawada, April 26: The counselling for the post-graduate medical courses of the Dr NTR University of Health sciences scheduled to commence from today have been postponed to April 28.

Earlier, the university vice-chancellor IV Rao said “The counselling was delayed as we are yet to get a clarification from the government over the High Court order against a petition filed on April 15 by four students from the Osmania region.”

Congress for outsiders as poll agents

Hyderabad, April 26: The Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee submitted a representation to chief electoral officer Bhanwar Lal here on Monday to permit persons from outside\neighbouring village persons as polling agents in sensitive polling stations where no voter or local is willing to act as an election agent.

Serpentine queues for last glimpse of Baba

Puttaparthi, April 26: Even the most stoic of devotees let their composure slip as they saw up close the mortal remains of the Sathya Sai Baba lying in state in the grand Sai Kulwant Hall at Prashanti Nilayam on Monday.

As they filed past the body, many broke down and wept inconsolably.

Hymns and soft music softly played on the speakers, accenting the reflective mood in the mourning hall.

The body will lie in state in the hall till 6 pm Tuesday to enable devotees pay their last respects.

No food, no water for Baba devotees

Puttaparthi, April 26: There were loud mutters among the devotees sweltering in the long queues along the streets of this pilgrim town: There was not a morsel of food to be had nor even a drop of water.

For the ultra cautious police had shut down all the shops and restaurants in town.

In their anxiety to ensure a smooth passage for the VIPs streaming into town for a last glimpse of the Sai Baba, the police had shut down the town.

These measures left the ordinary devotees in the lurch. Most of them had to trudge more than 3 km to reach Prasanthi Nilayam.

Scramble for trains, buses to pilgrim town

Hyderabad, April 26: Around 5.10 p.m., Sri Lakshmi, a housewife, was anxiously searching for the names of her family members on the reservation chart pasted on the S6 coach of Puttaparthi special train at Secunderabad railway station.

Another person, N Sivanand, with a ticket in hand, was eagerly asking the Ticket Collector (TC) whether his ticket was confirmed or not.

Both are devotees of Satya Sai Baba and were keen to go to Puttaparthi to catch a final glimpse of the Baba, who passed away on Sunday.

10 die as tractor falls in canal

Guntur, April 26: A tractor trailer carrying 23 farm workers skidded into the Amaravathi major canal near Sattenapalli on Monday morning leading to the death of ten persons while three others were injured.

According to police, the farm workers of Vaddipalli Sundaraiah colony of Sattenapalli left for work in a tractor.

When the tractor driver tried to avert a deep pit, the trailer got delinked and fell into the canal.

Heart-rending scenes at Shivam

Hyderabad, April 26: Clad in white clothes and suffering great mental pain and sorrow, 26-year-old K Abhishek, an IT professional, and his close friends, all great devotees of Satya Sai Baba, were seen distributing brief treatises at the main entrance gate of Sathya Sai Seva Samstha or Shivam temple that indicates “Baba might have left his mortal remains, but the spiritual sage’s ideologies are immortal.’’

Even kids were spellbound by Sai’s presence

Hyderabad, April 26: When I am asked about the time when I became Bhagawan Sathya Sai’s devotee, it reminds of the day when as a 6-year-old I saw this picture of a person in an orange robe with an Afro hairstyle lovingly smiling at me.

I wondered who he was and why so many people were singing such beautiful songs in praise of him … such was his aura that even when I was a naughty 6-year-old he managed to make me sit quietly and listen to bhajans for almost an hour.

I remember being lost in the pleasant smell of incense and vibhuti. That was my first contact with Bhagawan Sai.

Water Board Prajavani today

Hyderabad, April 26: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) will hold its Prajavani programme from 10 am to 1 pm on April 25 at all Operations and Maintenance divisions from I to XVI for solving grievances of consumers relating on the spot.

Water Board has delegated powers to chief general managers and general managers to settle disputes at divisional level up to Rs15,000.

Disputes above Rs 15,000 would be solved at the head office at Khairatabad.

‘Rapist’ RGIA constable suspended

Hyderabad, April 26: Rafeeq, a constable attached to Rajiv Gandhi Airport, who was facing allegations of rape of a 26-year-old woman was arrested and suspended from service on Saturday.

The decision was taken by the Cyberabad police commissioner based on a complaint by victim on Friday.

RGIA police said Rafeeq has been in an affair with the victim for 2 years. According to her, Rafeeq promised that he would marry her.

But, two months ago, he married someone else. She alleged Rafeeq had sex with her. RGIA cops booked Rafeeq.

Puttaparthi witnesses unprecedented crowds

Puttaparthi,April 26: As in life, so in death, spiritual leader Sathya Sai Baba has been drawing thousands of people from across the country and abroad for a last glimpse of his mortal remains lying in state at Prashanti Nilayam here.

“Over 300,000 people from all over the country and abroad have come here to see Sathya Sai since Sunday evening. Though the body was originally to be kept for public viewing till 6 p.m., we extended it till midnight as thousands are still pouring into the town,” Sri Sathya Sai Trust member N. Chalapathi Rao told IANS here Tuesday.

Police security for Sathya Sai Baba aide, doctors

Puttaparthi (Andhra Pradesh), April 26: Police have provided security to Sathya Sai Baba’s caregiver Satyajit in view of alleged threats to his life.

Security has also been stepped up for doctors of Sathya Sai Super Speciality Hospital in view of the threats by a section of devotees who blamed their negligence for the spiritual guru’s death.

Some eminent devotees had alleged that Satyajit and some doctors were responsible for Sathya Sai Baba’s illness, reports said.

The 85-year-old spiritual leader passed away Sunday, 28 days after he was admitted to the hospital.

Titans lure voters ahead of Kadapa bypolls

9461 bind over cases filed ahead of Kadapa bypolls

Kadapa, April 26: District authorities today informed that so far 119 vehicles have been impounded and Rs 1.93 crore seized in Kadapa district where bypolls will be held on May 8.

District Collector and Returning Officer Sasi Bhusan Kumar said in a press release today that so far 9461 bind over cases have been filed in the limits of the district.

Under bind over cases, magistrates can bind over to be of good behaviour or to keep the peace, any person such as a defendant, witness or complainant. This may happen where the case involves violence or the threat of it.

Panchayat Secretary nabbed for graft

Vijayawada, April 25:ACB sleuths late on Saturday nabbed Panchayat Secretary of the Pulipadu village of Gurajala mandal of Vijayawada district, Bogavarapu Kasi Viswanadham red-handed in his office when he demanded and accepted an amount of Rs 2,000 as bribe from the complainant to prepare and issue approved building plan in faovur of the complainant’s son.

The tainted amount of Rs 2,000 was recovered from the left side upper shirt pocket of Viswanadham at his instance.

Chemical test conducted on both hand fingers of the accused yielded positive result.

PM, Sonia Gandhi to visit Puttaparthi Tuesday

Puttapaparthi, April 25: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi will arrive here Tuesday evening to pay their last respects to spiritual leader Sathya Sai Baba.

The two leaders would arrive at 4.30 p.m., Andhra Pradesh’s Major Industries Minister J. Geeta Reddy announced.

She said devotees would be allowed a “last darshan” of Sathya Sai Baba, who died Sunday, till 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Key announcement on Sai Baba’s condition at 11 a.m.

Puttaparthi (Andhra Pradesh), April 24: Millions of devotees of spiritual leader Sathya Sai Baba are on the edge as Sathya Sai Central Trust is set to make a key announcement on his condition in a couple of hours Sunday.

For the first time since Baba was admitted to Sathya Sai Baba super speciality on March 27, the doctors did not issue a morning bulletin on Sunday, heightening anxiety in this pilgrim town.

Sathya Sai Central Trust, which runs social service activities in India and abroad, is to hold a media conference at 11 a.m. to make an important announcement.

Sri Sathya Sai Baba passes away: Reports

Puttaparthi, April 24: Reports said on Sunday that Sri Sathya Sai Baba has passed away, hours after his condition deteriorated further and his organs stopped responding to treatment.

Reports said Sai Baba breathed last at 7.30 am this morning.

Family members were called in this morning at the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences where Sai Baba was undergoing treatment.

Security was also tightened in Puttaparthi before the news was passed on to the media.

No improvement in Sai Baba’s condition

Hyderabad, April 24: Representatives of the Andhra Pradesh government and members of the Shri Sathya Sai Baba Central Trust are engaged in discussions as the latest medical bulletin from Puttaparthi termed the condition of Baba as very critical.

The 5 PM medical bulletin states that he continues to be on ventilator support and his blood pressure is a great deal of concern. The discussions between the trust and the trustee continued and the meeting was held to analyse the situation in the wake of the health condition of Baba.

Workshop on effective teaching methods held

Kakinada, April 23: Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Kakinada (JTNUK) on Friday conducted a workshop on ‘Effective Teaching Methods.’

Speaking on the occasion, Vice-Chancellor Allam Appa Rao said that the programme was aimed at making the teachers of the university learn international teaching skills.
