Sibal assures autonomy to protesting IIT teachers

New Delhi, September 27: The government would not interfere in the administration of the premier Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Kapil Sibal has assured the protesting IIT teachers, even as he sought to clarify some of their contentions.

“The IIT system can (be) rest assured Kapil Sibal will not interfere,” the minister told Karan Thapar in an interview telecast on the CNN-IBN Sunday night.

Right to Education: Using technology to jump start learning

The right of children to free and compulsory education is perhaps the biggest inclusive step taken by India since independence. The delay in enacting the law has caused the country to slip deeper into illiteracy, poverty and social discrimination.

Tough law in the offing to check practice of capitation fee

New Delhi, September 27: If an educational institute indulges in malpractices like failure to deliver on its promises and charges capitation fee it will face the prospect of closure, according to a tough law being prepared by the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry.

Seeking to bring an end to the illegal practice in technical professional colleges, the ministry has prepared a draft legislation which prescribes cancellation of registration of an institute for charging capitation fee.

Hit by recession, more job seekers turn to DRDO

Bangalore, September 27: With job losses caused by economic recession in various sectors, the Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is turning out to be the destination of primary choice among young job seekers as the premier defence organisation received a whooping 1.13 lakh applications for the Scientist Entry Test held recently.

The applications were received in response to an advertisement in May for 220 posts in the Defence Research and Development Organisation, the R&D wing of the ministry of defence, a release said here on Saturday.

Private polytechnics warned against overcharging

Lucknow, September 26: Taking note of reports of private polytechnics overcharging from students, Uttar Pradesh government has warned that stern action will be taken against such institutions.

In a letter sent to divisional commissioners and district magistrates, principal secretary, technical education, Vrinda Swaroop said the government had fixed Rs 14,500 annual fee per student in polytechnics.

However, there have been complaints that some private institutes were charging as much as Rs 40,000 from students.

Muslim women in MP score high on literacy

Bhopal, September 26: The literacy percentage among Muslim women in Madhya Pradesh is much higher than their counterparts in other North Indian states, according to the Madhya Pradesh Muslim Education Society (MPMES).

Madhya Pradesh has topped the figure with 60.1 per cent literacy among the Muslim women which was much better than other states including Assam, West Bengal, U P, Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand and Rajasthan as per the census of population 2001.

Goa school shuts down for week over swine flu

Panaji, September 25: The Goa education department Thursday directed a city school to close down for a week after two pupils were found suffering from swine flu and three other were suspected of being affected by the virus, a top education department official said.

Speaking to IANS late Thursday, director education Celsa Pinto said that People’s High School, located in the heart of the capital, was closed down after medical tests confirmed that two students had tested positive for the H1N1 virus.

Private universities in AP soon: Minister

Warangal, September 24: Minister for Higher Education D Sridhar Babu has said that steps were being taken to introduce private universities in the State soon.

In this competitive world, only talented students having good standard of higher education will have an edge over others, he said.

He suggested that all colleges and universities should improve their standards and felt that only such institutions will survive in the long run.

Norway to set up marine engineering institute in India: Sibal

New Delhi, September 24: The Human Resource Development Minister, Kapil Sibal on Wednesday said Norway would make investments for setting up a marine engineering institute in India.

“We have 1,500 km of coastline and in the coming years we will require more marine engineers as we set up new ports and explore oil and gas. Therefore the institute will be a win win situation for both India and Norway,” Sibal said, addressing ‘Third Global Summit on Skills Development’ organised by CII.

He did not give any details of the project such as its location and when it would be set up.

I’ll fast if IIT faculty takes moksha: Kapil Sibal

New Delhi, September 24: Elite educational institutes like the IITs and the IIMs should come up with a vision to achieve excellence and generate their own funds to break free from the government’s control, human resource development minister Kapil Sibal said on Wednesday.

Sibal offered to “fast” for the prosperity of the IITs, provided the faculty gives up its demands and drafts a roadmap to take the institutes ahead so that they could “produce Nobel Laureates”

New Delhi, September 23: Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal on Tuesday questioned the rationale of IIT faculty protesting like “trade unionists” against their revised pay scales.

“Pained” at their decision to observe a token fast on Thursday, he said the Ministry was in no way trying to interfere with the autonomy of the Indian Institutes of Technology as was made out by the faculty.

50 foreign varsities interested in having campus in India

New Delhi, September 17: About 50 foreign universities, including Duke University from the U.S., have evinced interest in setting up campuses in India as the government is all set to introduce a bill to allow entry of such institutions.

These institutions, mostly from the U.S., the U.K. and Australia, have approached the HRD Ministry in the last three months, a senior official said. Duke, a renowned private university in the U.S., offers courses in various streams and research studies.

Four students of BHU booked for ragging

Varanasi, September 15: Four engineering students of the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) here have been booked for allegedly ragging a first year student outside the varsity campus, police said today.

The four students — two of B. Tech third year and surprisingly two in the first year — allegedly assaulted the fresher on Monday and forced him to dance like a male stripper outside the university campus in this city, about 250 km from Uttar Pradesh capital Lucknow.

Mumbai and Australian universities ink pact

Mumbai, September 15: University of Mumbai today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the university of Western Australia (UWA), Perth for promoting academic cooperation and exchange of students and scholars.

The partnership between the two universities is to encourage joint research activities, exchange of staff and students, exchange of academic materials and other information, Registrar of the University of Mumbai, Venkat Ramani, said.

The MoU was signed between Doug McEachern, Deputy Vice-chancellor of UWA and Ramani.

Common entrance for science: Sibal

New Delhi, September 15: The years of toil for science students will soon be over. Union human resource development minister Kapil Sibal said on Monday that class XII students will be able to take a common entrance examination for engineering, medical and related courses within three years.

Sibal used the platform of the State of the States Conclave: India Today Chief Ministers Conference 2009 to make the announcement. ” We should have an all- India examination system for admission in the science stream. I want to put this into effect in three years,” he said.

Govt plans three universities for minorities

New Delhi, September 14: After allocating Rs. 25 crore (Rs.250 million) for two more campuses of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), the government is planning to set up three more universities for the country’s minorities, according to officials.

“Three universities primarily for the students of minority communities will be set up with a view to providing them better higher education,” a senior official of the minority affairs ministry told IANS, requesting anonymity since he is not authorised to speak to the media.

LLL mission possible if universities promote e-learning

Mumbai, September 13: The mission of LifeLong Learning (LLL) to enhance personal and professional lives of people of all ages and to increase their access to socio-economic opportunities is possible if the universities promote e-learning on a priority basis, educationists participating in a workshop said.

Molestation led to stampede at Delhi school, allege girls

New Delhi, September 12: Molestation of a few girls by some boys triggered the stampede at a government school in north-eastern Delhi, where five girls died on Thursday, some parents alleged on Friday.

Initial reports said rumours about electric shocks had caused the stampede, which left 32 students injured. Two of the injured girls are battling for life at the Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital in the capital.

Some of the girls spoke out on Friday, after which their parents approached the police.

Uttar Pradesh contests scrapping of civil services exam result

New Delhi, September 10: Uttar Pradesh Thursday moved the Supreme Court challenging an Allahabad High Court order that scrapped the result of the preliminary test of the state’s civil services examination for 2007.
The state government contended that the high court ruling has not merely brought the entire three-stage selection process of its civil services for the year to a naught but has also cast a doubt over the legality of the results of various other examinations for state jobs.
