Uttar Pradesh boy suffers fractures after beating by teachers

Lucknow, October 09: A principal and a teacher of an Uttar Pradesh private school have been slapped with cases for beating a class five student because he obtained low marks in a test, police said Friday.

Ayush Kumar Maurya, who studies at St. Joseph Junior High School, was Thursday hospitalised with multiple fractures and a head injury after he was brutally beaten by school principal R.Ibrahim and English language teacher A.V Joseph.

IGNOU signs pact with Papua New Guinea varsity

New Delhi, October 09: The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) Friday signed an agreement with the Papua New Guinea University of Technology for a number of educational and training programmes.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) envisages development of cultural, educational and scientific ties between the two universities. It will also encourage academic exchange and collaboration to advance education and training in the two institutions, said Silima Nanda, director (in charge) of IGNOU’s International Division.

Apollo Group to open medical college, expand facilities

New Delhi, October 07:Hospital chain Apollo Group will soon open a medical college for undergraduation, chairman Prathap C. Reddy said Wednesday.

“We are likely to start an undergraduate college. It is amply clear that just making hospital buildings is not enough. The skill is lacking and that is what is required,” Reddy told reporters on the sidelines of a medical summit here.

Reddy said Apollo was in talks with three reputed international universities for a tie-up. However, he refused to name the three varsities.

Half of Indian students don’t go beyond 2ndary level

New Delhi, October 07: At least 48 of every 100 students in India pursuing secondary education never go beyond that level, the World Bank said on Tuesday, pointing out that the country was doing worse than Vietnam and Bangladesh in enrolling students in secondary education.

“Thirty seven percent students fail before the final examination and 11 percent drop out during the period (class 9-12),” the World Bank study released said.

IIT Gandhinagar to prepare national fire registry

New Delhi, October 06:The one-year-old Indian Institute of Technology-Gandhinagar (IIT-G) will develop a national fire accident registry to provide better data and develop protection solutions for firefighters across the country, it was announced here Tuesday.

Underwriters Laboratories (UL), a leading US firm on product safety testing and certification, has agreed to a tie-up with the new IIT for this work.

“Yes, it was mooted during a lecture by a top UL official,” Maj.Gen. (retd.) Vijay Aga, the officer on speccial duty at IIT-G, told IANS.

SC pulls up teacher for eloping with student

Bhuwaneshwar, October 06: A teacher who eloped with a girl student and sought divorce from his wife, accusing her of inflicting “cruelty” and “deserting” him, got a dressing down on Monday from the Supreme Court (SC), which said the guru from Pathanamthitta district had defied the “sacred teacher-pupil relationship”.

A bench of justices BN Agrawal and GS Singhvi snubbed Kerala schoolteacher Philip Thomas Palamoottil for violating the sacred teacher-student relationship and seeking to divorce his wife, who, incidentally, was looking after his aged mother.

Punjab teachers to make weekly reports on students

Chandigarh, October 03: To keep a regular tab on students’ performance and to streamline the education system, all teachers in the state schools have been asked to maintain school diaries, the state education minister said here Friday.

“Among various steps for improvement in imparting quality education, teachers have been instructed to maintain diaries on weekly basis. They have to mention about syllabus covered, students’ weekly tests record, homework reports and planning for the next week,” Education Minister Upinderjit Kaur said.

Another Indian student Racially attacked in Australia

Melbourne, October 02: After a brief lull in attacks on Indians in Australia, a student from the community was attacked with a “plank of wood or a baseball bat” by two men which left him with 20 stitches in his head.

The 28-year-old student, whose name is not known immediately, was attacked by the men after he got down from a bus at Keilor Plains train station on Tuesday.

He has been left with 20 stitches in his head after an “unprovoked” attack in Melbourne’s north-west, the ‘Age’ newspaper reported.

IIT-Government stand off resolved: Sibal

New Delhi, October 02: The month-long standoff between the Government and IIT faculty over the issue of pay structure ended today with HRD Minister Kapil Sibal saying the norms could be relaxed in exceptional cases.

“All issues between IIT faculty and HRD Ministry over pay structure have been resolved,” he told reporters after meeting IIT faculty representatives to sort out the issue.

Educational institutions in Manipur shut for three weeks

Imphal, October 02: Students and guardians in India’s restive northeastern state of Manipur are at their wits’ end with all educational institutions shut down for the past three weeks and the government doing very little about it.

Andhra Pradesh allowed to offer engineering courses in evening shift

New Delhi, October 02: The Supreme Court today paved the way for the Andhra Pradesh government to run the evening shift of three-year engineering diploma courses, putting aside objections from private colleges.

A bench of Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, Justice P. Sathasivam and Justice B.S. Chauhan, suspended the Andhra Pradesh High Court’s Aug 18 order, which had halted the admission process for the evening shift of diploma courses in the state’s polytechnics and engineering colleges.

Drug tests for exam students ‘inevitable’

Sydney, October 01: The spectre of students queuing to provide urine samples before sitting exams is raised today by a scientist who says “academic doping” is likely to become as routine as in sport.

“Smart drugs” that are claimed to boost academic performance have proliferated in recent years, making the introduction of routine drug-testing for students inevitable, according to Vince Cakic, a psychologist at the University of Sydney in Australia.

Student ragged at gunpoint in Meerut, taken to hospital

Lucknow, October 01: Five senior students of the law department in Chaudhary Charan Singh University (CCSU) in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut district allegedly ragged and beat up a fresher at gunpoint, following which he had to be taken to a hospital, police said today.

The ragging took place on Wednesday on the campus, where the senior students forced Dev Singh Bhadana to stand on a chair and perform objectionable acts. When Bhadana protested, the seniors beat him black and blue after holding him at gunpoint, police said.

IITians to the aid of their short-staffed alma mater

Toronto, October 01: With IITs in India perpetually short of teaching staff, the seventh Pan-IIT Global Conference in Chicago next week will prepare a database of alumni ready to take up teaching assignments at their alma mater.

About 3,000 IITians from around the world will attend the three-day annual conference which will be addressed by former US president Bill Clinton. The theme of this year’s conference is ‘Entrepreneurship and Innovation in a Global Economy.’

Sibal to meet IIT faculty representatives tomorrow

New Delhi, October 01: HRD Minister Kapil Sibal will meet the faculty representatives of the Indian Institutes of Technology tomorrow, the Ministry announced this morning.

The meeting requested by All India IIT Faculty Federation president P Kenimozhi on Saturday is being scheduled almost a week after members across India kept the token fast on September 24 to protest professional curbs. The Minister ”is ready to meet them tomorrow before leaving on official visit to Paris on the 3rd,” spokesperson Mamta Varma said, adding ”the same is being communicated to the IIT faculty.”

Over 6,000 engineering seats vacant after second phase

Hyderabad, September 30: More than 6,000 seats are still vacant in engineering after the second phase of allotment done on Tuesday.

Allotment list is placed on the website – ‘http://apeamcet.nic.in’.

Officials said 9,017 seats remained vacant after the second phase of counselling of which 6,357 are in the engineering stream and 2,660 in the pharmacy stream.

After the first phase of allotment, 1,24,331 candidates reported to the colleges while 14,340 candidates preferred not to report.

University of Hyderabad ranked No 1 in India

Hyderabad, September 30: University of Hyderabad (UoH) has been ranked as the number one varsity in India on the basis of indicators like publication quality and also overall performance in the rankings given by a reputed agency.

“University of Hyderabad has been ranked as the number one university in the country based on multi-disciplinary bibliographic database on the basis of many indicators including publication quality, citation, impact and overall performance,” UoH vice-chancellor Seyed E Hasnain told reporters here tonight.

IIM-A okay with govt on pay

Ahmedabad, September 30: The Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad (IIM-A) has “in principle” agreed to toe the government line on salary for faculty.

But it will be implemented only after a month to make room for negotiations with the human resources ministry on the proposed recruitment and promotion policies. IIM-A director Samir Barua said its faculty council had some reservations on the ministry’s recommendations on these issues. But it will accept the recommendations on compensation.

Pilot Training Institute at Tiruchirappalli

Tiruchirapalli, September 30: A pilot training institute will be established at the International Airport here soon, according to V K N Kannappan, promoter of the institute here today.

Airport Authority of India (AAI) had allotted 10,000 sq ft area in the airport premises for starting the academy by VKN Aviation Academy (VAA), he told PTI.

VAA had acquired a fleet of five Cessna aircraft from the US and appointed insturctors and other personnel for commissioning the academy, he said.

About 100 persons would be trained for an year in the academy in a batch, he said.

Now grading system in UP Board’s matriculation exam

Lucknow, September 28: On the lines of CBSE board, the UP Board of Secondary Education will also implement grading system in class X examinations from the year 2011.

“Draft of the grading system has been prepared and it will be implemented in 2011 board examinations. Besides, there will only be one question paper for each subject,” Secondary Education Minister Rangnath Mishra told reporters in Fatehpur on Saturday.

He said that the high school students will be required to appear in five papers only.

India’s first degree course on tackling terrorism

New Delhi, September 28: Sumaya Rafiq Zargar, 23, grew up in Srinagar under the shadow of militancy but does not want her next generation to live in fear. She is in a batch of 18 students who have enrolled for the country’s first degree course in countering terrorism.

An initiative of Pune-based NGO Sarhad that works in insurgency-battered Jammu and Kashmir, the two-year post- graduate course called Counter Terrorism and Peace Management starts Oct 2 – the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi – at the Sarhad Research Centre in Pune.
