New Delhi, February 17: A team from Jamia Millia Islamia has won the Asia round of the prestigious World Photography Award after defeating participants from nine other countries of the region.

Zubair Ahmed and Akshat Jain of the institute”s AJK Mass Communication Research Centre (MCRC) and their teacher Farhat Basir Khan will now compete with five other teams from other parts of the world for the title.

Gadkari to open Maulana Azad seminar

Nagpur, February 17: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Nitin Gadkari will open a two-day seminar here Feb 21 to mark Maulana Abul Kalam Azad’s 52nd death anniversary, the organisers said Wednesday.

The seminar has been organised by the New Delhi-based Friends for Education and the United Students Association of Nagpur.

Scholars from all over India will converge here to present papers on Maulana Azad, a freedom fighter who was also a scholar, statesman as well as eminent educationist.

College girls spur literacy drive in Uttar Pradesh villages

Lucknow, February 17: Over 1,500 girls from a private college here have been busy shaping up the careers of illiterate and unemployed villagers in eastern Uttar Pradesh.

Students of the Sardar Patel Mahila Mahavidyalaya (SPMM) in Barabanki district, some 35 km from Lucknow, hold literacy camps in villages, offer career guidance to youth, run programmes to generate self-employment for poor women and undertake a number of other social initiatives to elevate the living standards of the rural populace.

Single national-level entrance test for students in the offing

New Delhi, February 16: Efforts are underway to hold a single national-level entrance test for students to get admission into engineering, medical and commerce courses from 2013, HRD Minister Kapil Sibal said.

“Efforts will be put to hold an All-India national test in Science and commerce from 2013. This will smoothen the admission process into engineering, medical, economics and commerce courses,” Sibal said, addressing a meeting of the Council of School Board of Education (COBSE) here.

India announces ten health fellowships

New Delhi, February 16: In a bid to strengthen cooperation in health sector, India today announced ten fellowships at a premier institute here for member countries of ‘Partners in Population and Development’ (PPD).

The announcement was made by Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad at a meeting of the executive committee of PPD held in Dhaka yesterday. He was chairing the meeting.

Schools across India to have common curriculum

New Delhi, February 16: From the 2011 academic year, all school boards across India will have a common curriculum in science and maths for Classes 11 and 12, to give students a level playing field and help them in taking competitive examinations.

This was announced Tuesday by union Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal.

“Today is a historic day for all students. There will be a core curriculum in the science stream (both science and mathematics) for all school boards across India. This will be implemented in 2011,” Sibal told reporters.

College threatens to move HC against polytechnic

Kapurthala, February 16: An institute opposing the setting up of a Centrally allocated polytechnic college in the Bhoalth area today threatened to move the Punjab and Haryana High Court against the state government’s move to its establishment over land issues.

Harjit Singh, president of Sant Prem Singh Karamsar Khalsa College, Begowal which is in possession of eight acres of land where the foundation stone is to be laid for the new institute, today told reporters that the management would move the court on the issue.

‘College teachers want UGC grades, sans accountability’

New delhi, February 16: The recently revised grades by the University Grants Commission (UGC) have also made the teaching community accountable for works other than teaching. According to the UGC guidelines, “Teachers have to stay for 40 hours in the institution and effective teaching for 20 hours in a week.”

Punished in school, 11-year-old dies

Bhubaneswar, February 15: An 11-year-old boy died in Orissa after he was beaten up by his class teacher in school for failing to answer a question, the boy’s family alleged Monday.

Ajaya Kumar Jena was punished in George High School at Bargarh town, some 380 km from here, Jan 29 after he failed to answer a question asked by his class teacher, Jena’s uncle Krushna Chandra Barge told IANS.

After beating Jena, the teacher asked some students who had answered the question to also punish him.

Private sector participation must in education: Sibal

Ahmedabad, February 13: Human Resources Development Minister Kapil Sibal today said private sector participation and investment are essential in providing quality education to all in the country.

“In the next few years, around 40,000 more colleges and institutes of higher education would be required to absorb the students and this cannot be done by the government only, private sector’s role is a must here,” he said while delivering the Justice P D Desai Memorial lecture here.

Male students can be victims of girlfriends’ violence too

Washington, February 13: Male college students can also be victims of their girlfriends’ violence, says a new study.

Sandra Stith, professor of family studies and human services at Kansas State University, said most research has looked at men as offenders and women as victims.

“In the research on college students in particular, we’re finding both men and women can be perpetrators,” she said. “In our growing-up years, we teach boys not to hit their sisters, but we don’t teach girls not to hit their brothers.”

UGC employees threaten strike if not shifted to NCHER

New Delhi, February 12: As the UGC faces the prospects of being replaced by an overarching body, its employees today threatened to launch a strike if they are not automatically shifted to the proposed National Council of Higher Education and Research.

Nearly 600 employees of the University Grants Commission (UGC) are have launched a black badge protest since yesterday, demanding they be shifted to the NCHER after it is created.

The employees are protesting the absence of a clear-cut rehabilitation policy for them in a draft Bill for creation of NCHER.

Cops will become doctors, thanks to AIIMS course

English language tests for foreign students ‘unfair’, says Cambridge

London, February 11: Britain’s largest provider of English language tests has expressed concern over government plans to impose strict English language tests for foreign students, saying such a move will not necessarily bring down the number of bogus students.

Cambridge ESOL, the world’s leading language assessor, said the British home ministry should ensure that “only tried and tested systems with high levels of security and quality control are recognised for this purpose.”

AP Muslims demand amendment for quotas

Hyderabad, February 09: Many Muslim groups in Andhra Pradesh staged protests Tuesday, mounting pressure on the state government to press for a constitutional amendment for quotas in higher education and jobs, a day after the high court struck down reservations for the community a third time.

Blaming the state government for its failure to put up a strong case in favour of reservations, the Muslim groups wanted the government to take all necessary steps to protect their interests.

State moves to ease college entry for SSC students

Mumbai, February 09: From this year onwards, college admission for SSC students will be based on their marks in their best five subjects.

And they will have to clear only five of the six subjects they appear for to get into college. The state education department has finalised a ‘best of five’ scheme to counter what it believes is an unfair advantage students of central boards enjoy because of a liberal marking system.

“Last week we met Chief Minister Ashok Chavan who gave his consent. We will go ahead with this scheme,” State Education Minister Balasaheb Thorat told.
