Nearly two lakh admission forms sold by Delhi University

New Delhi, June 11: The Delhi University (DU) this year sold nearly 200,000 application forms for admissions to its undergraduate courses – more than three times the number of seats offered by the varsity.

The sale of application forms, which began May 28, culminated Friday.

“We sold 186,672 forms for undergraduate courses this year which is a phenomenal number. The total number of seats offered by the varsity is 54,000 – a good 5,000 more seats than last year,” an official statement by the varsity said.

Chhattisgarh seeks education package for violence-hit areas

Raipur, June 11: Admitting that unabated Maoist violence has hit its education system hard, Chhattisgarh has urged the central government to release a special package for the six most affected districts, an official said Friday.

“Chhattisgarh government has informed in written to Indian government that Maoist violence has taken a heavy toll on education system in the state and the state government needs a package from the Centre to bring the education system back on track mainly in six worst-hit districts,” a senior education department official told.

DSC-2008 teachers’ posts to be filled

Hyderabad, June 10: In a crucial decision aimed at ending the unrest among candidates selected under District Selection Committee – 2008, the government has in principle accepted the recommendation of a Cabinet sub-committee to fill all the notified teachers’ posts.

The Cabinet sub-committee, comprising D. Manikya Varaprasad, Botcha Satyanarayana and N. Raghuveera Reddy, met on Wednesday evening and decided to fill over 30,000 notified posts as and when the vacancies arise within five months to one year. The controversy arose as more posts were notified than the actual vacancies.

Cycling to success, Bihar girl inspires documentary

Patna, June 09: She pedalled 10 km to and fro school every day from her village home and went on to stand second in the Bihar Class 10 board exam. Khushboo Kumari says she could never have done it without the cycle she got under a government scheme.

“I simply pedalled five km every day to the school thanks to the cycle provided by the government,” Khushboo, a teenaged resident of Bagaun village in Katihar district, told IANS over telephone.

Jobs are back in India

New York, June 09: Employment recovery in emerging Asian economies including India is in full swing even as the private sector in the US is still wary of creating new jobs, the “global survey of hiring intentions” by Manpower has revealed.

The survey, based on 61,000 interviews, found better jobs prospects in 23 of 36 countries and territories when compared with the second quarter, and all but four were higher from a year ago.

The strongest hiring prospects are in emerging Asian economies like India and China, where companies enjoy both local and export demand, it said.

Engineering admissions? 15 lakh per head

Physically challenged students keen to enter DU

New Delhi, June 05: The number of physically challenged students reporting for admissions at the Delhi University has steadily gone up to 300 in the first week of the process after an initially poor turnout.

Only 20 ‘special students’ had reported on the first two days at the admission centre catering for them, leaving the University administration concerned over the abysmally low number.

However, the number picked up in the later days with as many as 72 students turning up on one of the admission days.

Admission in Hyderabad University

Hyderabad, June 03: Entrance examinations for aspiring students to study in Hyderabad University would be held from June 1 to 7 at 25 centres all over the country including Hyderabad Centre.

According to a press note, the examinations at Hyderabad centre would be held at University campus, Gachibowli Hyderabad and the hall tickets for the candidates have been sent in advance.

Two courses that will help you switch over to science stream

New Delhi, June 03: Two science courses, BSc mathematical science and BSc computer science, are most sought after in Delhi University ( DU) this time round.

The university authorities said they had received many enquiries for the courses. And this, they said, was because both the courses provide a good option to the students from all the three streams — arts, commerce and science — to enter into the science stream.

Corporal punishment: School initiates probe against teacher

Mohali (Punjab), June 02: After sacking a teacher for allegedly thrashing a Class 8 boy during a school trip, following which the mother of the student died of shock, the Yadavindra Public School (YPS) here has initiated a probe against another teacher who faces similar allegations.

“We have started an inquiry into similar allegations made against another teacher Anil Pathania. Corporal punishment is totally intolerable. If we find him guilty, he too will have to leave his job,” Anita Kashayap, vice-principal of the school, told IANS here.

66-year-old fails in Class 10 boards for 45th time

Lucknow, June 02: It was 45th time unlucky for 66-year-old Jabbar Husen from an Uttar Pradesh village who has failed his Class 10 exams again this year — but the never-say-die grocer is determined try and try again till he succeeds in clearing the exam.

Husen, who owns a grocery store in Fatehpur district’s Bindki village, about 200 km from here, could not clear three of the six papers in Class 10. Results of the Class 10 Uttar Pradesh board were announced Tuesday.

3 students suspends for ragging

Haryana, June 02: Three MBA students were Tuesday suspended by the vice-chancellor of the Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU) here for ragging their juniors, officials said.

The three students – Aman Redhu, Surender Bishnoi and Anil Dalal – were accused of physically harassing and intimidating two junior students of the Institute of Management Studies and Research (IMSR) here.

Teenagers lack concentration because of grey matter

London, June 02: Teenagers get distracted easily because their brains are similar to those of younger children, making them less organised and susceptible to distraction than older people, a study has found.

“It is not always easy for adolescents to pay attention in class without letting their minds wander or to ignore distractions from their younger sibling when trying to solve a maths problem,” telegraph.co.uk reported quoting Iroise Dumontheil, one of the researchers from University College London’s Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience.

A demand draft of Rs 300 from State Bank of India is needed to buy the form, but the students could not make the drafts due to SBI’s server failure.

A science student, she topped in English

New Delhi, June 01: It was a glorious day for the Marathwada Mitramandal College of Commerce (MMCC) as Vishwanjali Gaikwad, a student of the science stream topped in the English language in the Pune division. It is very rarely that the science stream students rank first in languages.

Vishwanjali scored 94 marks in English to set a record. Incidentally, she has scored a 96.33 per cent in the science stream. Vishwanjali’s success is all the more credible since she did not attend any private coaching class.

Kanpur University students to have 17-digit UID numbers

Kanpur, May 31: To provide information on students, Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University here will be providing 17-digit Unique Identity (UID) numbers to all its pupils taking admission this academic session.

“Every student will be provided with an UID number. They will also have a web page which will contain all significant information about examinations, attendance, results, co-curricular activities,” Vice Chancellor of the University Prof Harsh Kumar Sehgal told.

New Delhi, May 31: Eighteen-year-old Vipul Singh from Bhilai in Chhattisgarh, who is this year’s IIT-JEE topper from the Kharagpur region, has also topped the ninth All-India Engineering/Architecture Entrance Examination, the results for which were declared on Sunday.

Vipul who is in the capital to receive his award for topping the International Mathematics Olympiad and also for securing an overall rank-2 in the National Science Olympiad, secured an impressive all India 5th rank in the IIT-JEE. He scored 96.2 per cent in the Class XII examinations.

Govt colleges allowed to increase MBBS seats

New Delhi, May 31: To overcome the shortage of qualified doctors, the Central government has increased the ceiling on MBBS seats in a government medical college from 150 to 250, provided the hospital has a bed capacity of 1,000 or more.

The increase in the ceiling will come into effect in the 2011-12 academic session. “But the raise in the ceiling is not automatic; it is subject to verification of infrastructure and human resource,” Health and Family Welfare Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad told TheHindu.

CBSE yet to decide on report by Ruchika school

New Delhi, May 30: A report submitted by a Chandigarh school on expulsion of Ruchika Girhotra, who was molested by former Haryana DGP S P S Rathore, is under consideration of CBSE and no decision has been taken on it.

“The school has submitted the report about its action of expelling Ruchika. The report is being considered by a committee. No decision has been taken in this matter,” CBSE chairman Vineet Joshi said.

60 percent California school students fail English test

Los Angeles, May 29: Nearly 60 percent students in California’s high schools are unable to pass English proficiency test despite over six years of US education.

The flaws in English language programmes have put the academic future of hundreds of thousands of children in jeopardy, shattering their college dreams and imperilling the state’s economic future, said a study based on the survey of 40 schools.

Seats for disabled students go vacant

New Delhi, May 29: While most students vie for a seat in the Delhi University (DU), the seats for students with disabilities lie vacant for want of applicants. The university offers more 1,620 undergraduate seats for students with disabilities.

Last year only 394 of these seats were filled. “We have never been able to fill more than 400 seats through the disability quota.

Day 1: 40,559 forms sold

New Delhi, May 29: The admission process for undergraduate courses to Delhi University colleges kicked off on Friday with a whopping 40,559 forms being sold on day one. In comparison, the varsity had sold only 27,610 forms on day one last year.

The Faculty of Arts in the North Campus sold the highest number of forms at 5,400 and Kirori Mal College was next with 4,500. Students thronged the 16 centres across the city to collect the common admission forms for the 54,000 seats .

Girls outshine boys in CBSE Class 10 exams

New Delhi, May 28: Girls once again outperformed boys in the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Class 10 exams results announced here Friday.

The board, which introduced the grading system in the exam for the first time, said 90.68 percent girls are eligible for the qualifying certificate as compared to 88.30 percent boys.

A total of 886,338 students from 9,439 schools across the country and abroad took the Class 10 exams this year. Of them, 522,107 were boys and 364,231 girls.

NIT to scout students abroad for its flagship scheme

Panaji, May 28: India’s leading chain of technical education institutes, National Institute of Technology (NIT), will now have student ambassadors travelling abroad to increase the reach of its flagship scheme.

“We will appoint 50 to 60 student ambassadors to promote NIT’s scheme for foreign students abroad,” Sandeep Sancheti, Director, NIT Suratkal, said.

He said that the institute’s ambitious scheme, Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA), could not garner much attention as NIT has not been able to market its potential.
