No more additional sheets in University examinations

Banglore, March 10: Mangalore University will issue only one answer book with a fixed number of pages during examinations for its postgraduate and undergraduate students from the next semester examinations commencing in May. The university will not provide additional answer sheets to students as has been the practice all along. The measure is aimed at curbing malpractice.

Parents lose sleep over children’s exams

Hyderabad, March 08: With the proposed ‘Million March to Hyderabad’ on March 10 fast approaching, P Veena, a mother of a teenage student is wondering what makes her more nervous – the Intermediate exam that her son is appearing for on the day or the T protest.

Her son, a second year Inter student in a college in Dilsukhnagar, will have to sit for a language exam on the day of the Million March called for by the T JAC.

Mother, daughter to appear for secondary exams in Bengal

Kolkata, March 08: Displaying a never-say-die spirit, Bharati Devi, a 40-year-old mother of three, is all set to appear for her secondary examinations this year along with her daughter in northern West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district.

Bharati, who works at a child education centre along with her married daughter Sanchita, is sitting for the examinations at Sunitibala Sadar Girls High School as an external candidate.

528 placement offers made at IIM Lucknow

New Delhi, March 05: The campus placement at IIM, Lucknow, concluded today, with a total of 528 offers being made for a batch of 366 students, said the institute in a statement.

“This is the largest graduating batch to be placed across all IIMs, till date,” the statement added.

The offers made include 70 pre-placement offers, 213 lateral offers for higher entry placement and 245 offers during the final placement week, said the statement adding, 206 companies participated in the placement process this year.

1,589 British lose job every day

England, March 05: Over 1,500 British people lose their jobs every day due to the country’s £1.4trillion debt in loans and mortgages, which is more than the national output.

According to the personal debt charity Credit Action, Britain’s debt rose by £1.5billion in 2011, which caused 1,589 redundancies every day and 833,000 unemployed for a year or more. This means the country now owe more than the total national production.

CBSE papers leaked in Nicobar: BJP MP

New Delhi, March 04: Alleging that CBSE question papers in Car Nicobar were leaked, BJP MP from the region Bishnupada Roy on Friday demanded that the exams be cancelled and fresh one held.

The CBSE examinations for Class XII and Class X started on March 1.

“The CBSE question papers of Class X and Class XII were leaked on February 17 in Nicobar. But instead of cancelling the examination, authorities conducted the examination in March 1,” the Andaman and Nicobar MP told reporters outside Parliament.

2 day job fair starts in Guntur Engineering College

Guntur, March 04: A two-day job mela kicked off on the premises of Guntur Engineering College at Yanamadala village.

College chairman M. Nara Hari Rao and principal K.L Narayana said that more than 1,500 students from all over the State registered for the job mela.

Major IT and ITES companies like Genpact, Hacket Group, Abott, Horizon, Trainzent, BPL, Emos, Span, Solarsoft, Angel Broking and Cadila came down to the campus. Screening tests were conducted and the short-listed candidates were called for interviews.

Campus placement officer M. Venkatesh was also present.

Mumbai college postpones exam following hoax call

Mumbai, March 04: Searches were conducted and exams were postponed at the SNDT women’s college in suburban Malad here today after a hoax phone call stating that an explosive was kept inside the college premises was received, police said.

As the exam was about to start, the college’s telephone operator received the phone call on the institute’s MTNL landline number, with an unidentified person warning about a bomb planted in the college premises.

IGNOU launches portal for students, partner institutions

New Delhi, March 03: The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) Thursday launched a web portal for students and partner institutions (PIs). It would play a vital role in providing guidelines, publishing information and enhancing interaction, an official said.

The portal has been designed and developed jointly by the Advanced Centre for Informatics and Innovative Learning and the International Division of the university in the Electronic and Media Production Centre, added the official.

New Delhi, March 03: He was just 33 years old when he found himself at the helm of a Delhi University college whose financial and administrative systems had collapsed and which had the dubious distinction of principals being ousted by student agitations. But a determined Rajendra Prasad, who completed 25 years in office last year, took it upon himself to make Ramjas College a top institution.

Appointed as principal in 1985, Prasad recalled those terrible days when there was no alignment between the administration and students.

London university looking into Gaddafi’s son plagiarism claims

London, March 02: The London School of Economics (LSE) said on Tuesday it was looking into claims that Colonel Muammer Gaddafi’s son, Saif al-Islam, had plagiarised his doctorate thesis.

“LSE is aware that there are allegations of plagiarism concerning the PhD thesis of Saif Gaddafi,” the university said in a statement.

“The School takes all allegations of plagiarism very seriously, and is looking into the matter in accordance with standard LSE procedures.”

Saif al-Islam studied at the LSE between 2003 and 2008 and left with a Master of Science degree and a doctorate.

900 percent fee hike by McGill University fuels anger

Toronto, March 02: Canada’s world-famous McGill University, which is the first-choice destination for Indian and other foreign students seeking to study in this country, faces fine for 900 percent hike in tuition fee for its MBA programme.

The Montreal-based university had announced last spring to raise the tuition fee from $1,673 per semester to $29,500 a year for its two-year MBA programme.

While students earned an MBA degree until now by paying just about $6700, they will now have to shell out $59,000 to earn the degree.

CBSE board exams on, physics paper disappoints students

New Delhi, March 02: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) examinations started on Tuesday on a disappointing note to many, with several class-12 students complaining that the physics paper was too lengthy to finish in three hours.

According to students, the physics paper, though easy, could not be completed as the questions marked 2 and 5 were a bit too lengthy.

“The paper was easy but lengthy and I could attempt only 70 percent of the questions,” said a nervous looking Ankit Kumar, a student of Kendriya Vidyalaya Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus in the capital.

5 regional centres of the National School of Drama to be set up

New Delhi, March 02: Minister of Culture and Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation Kumari Selja has said that on the basis of the recommendations of the Broad Based Committee of the NationalSchool of Drama (NSD), it has been proposed to open 5 Regional Schools/Centres of the National School of Drama across the country.

The five locations identified for the setting up of these Schools/Centres are Bengaluru (upgradation of existing Regional Resource Centre), Kolkata, Maharashtra/Goa, Jammu & Kashmir and the North East.

There is no proposal to set up any such centre in Tamil Nadu.

Sibal calls for attention on adolescents

New Delhi, March 02: Adolescents in the country need immediate attention in terms of their educational needs, Human Resource Development Minster Kapil Sibal said here on Tuesday.

“Education is the key to address the problems that our adolescents are facing. Schools play the most crucial role to address these problems, hence teachers are central in reaching out to children,” Sibal said.

The minister was addressing the South Asian regional conference on learning and developmental needs of out-of-school adolescents.

25 Indian VCs for Canada education summit

Toronto, March 02: Twenty-five Indian vice-chancellors will participate in the Canada-India Education Summit to be held at Ottawa’s Carleton University as part of the Year of India in Canada.

The two-day education summit will be held on May 16 and 17.

A statement on Monday said Carleton University will host the summit in collaboration with the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute, the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (Canada), the Indian high commission and the Association of Colleges and Universities of Canada (AUCC).

Teacher Worry As DU Mulls Semester for Arts, Commerce

New Delhi, March 02: The Delhi University Teachers’ Association (DUTA) and the university administration argued over the introduction of semester system in 13 science courses last year. They are now again disturbed over the semester system, as the varsity hopes to introduce it in humanities and commerce courses from the new academic year that begins in July.

The teachers had opposed the switch from annual to semester mode citing reasons such as dilution of courses, lack of infrastructure and teachers.

Honesty, humility linked to better job performance

Washington, March 02: Believe it or not — the more honest and humble an employee is, the better is his or her job performance, according to a new study.

“This study shows that those who possess the combination of honesty and humility have better job performance,” said study leader Wade Rowatt, associate professor of psychology and neuroscience at Baylor University in the US.

Baylor researchers surveyed 269 employees in 25 companies across 20 states in the US who provide health care for challenging clients, the journal Personality and Individual Differences reports.
