Porn clips forces JNU administration to undertake drastic measures

New Delhi, February 15: The porn MMS clip at Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has forced the administration to undertake some drastic measures. Some of them are not finding favour with students.

Student associations in the varsity held a protest on Monday in front of the Administrative Block condemning an official circular by the JNU administration on banning the entry of girls to boys’ hostel after 10.30 p.m. following the MMS episode.

Eligibility test for law graduates on March 6

New Delhi, February 14: Around 23,000 fresh law graduates will appear in a mandatory open book written exam on March 6 for the first time, the result of which will determine whether they would be eligible to practice as lawyers in Indian courts. The exam will be conducted by the Bar Council of India (BCI), the regulator for legal profession and education in the country, in 10 languages at 27 centres across the country.
The candidates will start receiving their admit cards for the exam from February 15 onwards, according to the BCI.

Rahul interacts with students in Shillong

Shillong, February 14: Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi visited this Meghalaya capital on Monday to interact with students of the North Eastern Hill University on a range of issues from corruption to price rise and insurgency.

Gandhi was here for a session “Rendezvous with Rahul Ji”. He was scheduled to visit Sikkim capital Gangtok earlier in the day for a similar session, but that was cancelled.

G. Krishnan, programme coordinator, said Gandhi interacted with students on issues ranging from corruption to price rise and insurgency.

Summer vacation is cut short in schools

New Delhi, February 14: The Vacation plans will now need to be reworked as all the government and government-aided schools will now break for summer from May 11, and not May 1, as is the practice. Winter holidays, according to a circular issued by the directorate of education, will be longer � from December 26 to January 15. The break usually ended on January 2.

During the past few years it is seen that winter has become much harsher in January. This year the vacations were extended till the second week of January, so it was decided to changed the annual calendar.

Japanese channel to film Super 30

Patna, February 14: A team from a Japanese television channel has arrived in Patna to make a documentary on Anand Kumar, who founded Bihar’s free coaching centre Super 30.
Yuta Amma from Japan’s Kansai Telecasting Corporation, told that Anand Kumar is regarded as “a role model in Japan”.

Kumar’s Super 30 coaching centre has helped many students from underprivileged sections of the society to enter the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).

Amma is in Patna with his crew to make a special documentary on Kumar and his Super 30.

Panjab University gets own community radio

Chandigarh, February 14: In a bid to highlight developmental issues and the problems of the people, the Panjab University (PU) here on Sunday got its own “Jyotirgamaya” community radio.
Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni inaugurated the radio station at the School of Communication Studies building on the university campus.

Arab students in Delhi rejoice with Egyptian people

New Delhi, February 14: As Egypt celebrated the end of President Hosni Mubarak’s three-decade-long rule Friday night, students from the Arab world studying here rejoiced with them. Glued to the internet for the latest update until now, they are now keeping a close watch on what happens next.

Most students said their happiness is more for the people of Egypt whose voice was finally heard than over the end of Mubarak’s rule.

India raises issue of sham US varsity students

Washington, February 14: Indian External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna has sought US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s personal intervention to ensure that the interests of over 1,500 Indian students of a sham California university are protected and their future is not jeopardised.
Krishna raised the plight of the Indian students of the dubious Tri Valley University (TVU) in Pleasanton, California that was closed down last month on charges of selling student visas, in a conversation with Clinton over the weekend, the Indian embassy here said.

‘Sir Syed laid down foundation of modern education in India’

Girls outshine boys at Panjab University convocation

Chandigarh, February 14: Girls clearly outnumbered boys at the 60th annual convocation function at Panjab University (PU) here Monday. Out of the 479 students who were awarded degrees, 351 were girls.

Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni was the chief guest at the convocation, while Punjab Governor and Chandigarh administrator Shivraj Patil presided over the function.

Doctor held for duping MBBS aspirants

Hyderabad, February 14: An MBBS qualified doctor, who duped several students by promising them seats in medical colleges, was arrested by the Cyberabad police on Sunday.

The 26-year-old accused, Gaddam Shyam Sunder, a native of Adilabad, completed his MBBS in 2009 and worked in private nursing homes for a brief period. He later set up his own organisation named Gaddam Rajgadh Education Trust at Adilabad with a branch at Kothapet in the city. He even planned to obtain government land in the name of the Trust.

Vocational training to get a makeover

Hyderabad, February 14: If vocational training for women brings to mind images of women being taught knitting, embroidery and sewing, the latest moves by the state education department is all set to change that.

The department, with an aim to bring about a change in the kind of vocational training being imparted, is planning to shift the focus from low profile job training with little current market value to more commercially viable training in professional jobs.

Hyderabad, February 14: The St. Patrick’s High School, Secunderabad erupted in joy to have its alumnus Padma Vibhushan Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, at the valedictory of its centenary celebrations. Montek Singh Ahluwalia studied in the school from 1953 to 1957.

NDC creates history with first-ever doctorate viva

New Delhi, February 14: The National Defence College (NDC), India’s premier defence studies institution affiliated to the Madras University, has entered history books by holding its first-ever viva-voce for a doctorate degree.

The NDC, a capital-based institution which conducts Master of Philosophy courses for serving armed forces officers, held the viva-voce for awarding Ph.D. in defence-related topic when retired Major General G.D. Bakshi submitted his research thesis on the topic ‘Limited War Under Conditions of Nuclear Symmetry: The Urgent Need for an Indian Doctrine’.

No Early End to The Woes of TVU Students

New York, February 13: Three weeks after they lost their visa status to be in the US, more than 1,000 Indian students from the Tri Valley University (TVU) are in for a “long haul” though the Indian Government has raised the issue at the highest level.

Many of the students from the California-based TVU, which has been shut down on charges of massive visa fraud, said they are stuck here without any concrete plan to get out of their dilemma.

Dubai MBA gets top 100 ranking in FT list

Dubai, February 13: In the space of six years, Indian business school SP Jain has managed to clinch a spot on the top 100 list of the Financial Times’ (FT) Global MBA rankings this year.

The university’s Dubai/Singapore Global MBA programme came 68th among the world’s major business school players.

Apart from its Global MBA ranking highly, the Financial Times ranked the university 7th in Asia, 9th among Asian schools on “Value for Money” and 13th in Asia for “International Mobility” and “Placement Success”. SP Jain has links in Dubai, Delhi, Mumbai, Singapore, Shanghai and Sydney.

Tourism graduates have no jobs

Jeddah, February 13: With unemployment a widespread concern in the Kingdom, the first batch of 44 graduates of a new tourism management course at King Saud University in Riyadh is unable to find jobs. The students claim they were promised jobs by the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities (SCTA).

“More than half of us were reluctant to study tourism. However, after we were told that the market needs us and that we would be guaranteed jobs, we completed our four-year-study only to then sit at home,” said Al-Mutairi, a 23-year-old graduate who is from Tabuk.

Jamia to celebrate Zakir Hussain’s birth anniversary

New Delhi, February 12: Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) is organising an Inter-Agency Sports and Cultural Meet Sunday in memory of the late president Zakir Husain, a university official said.
