HC notice to Centre on declaring Jamia varsity minority institution

New Delhi, March 24: The grant of minority status to Jamia Millia Islamia University by the National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions (NCMEI) on Wednesday came under the scanner of the Delhi High Court which has sought responses from the Centre and others on a PIL.

“Issue notice to Human Resources Development Ministry, the Ministry of Minority Affairs …. for February 22, a bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Sanjiv Khanna said.

Students’ stir disrupts exams in Aligarh university

Aligarh, March 23: All important activities in the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), including admissions and examinations, remained paralyzed Tuesday on account of the forced locking of the central offices by the students’ union a day earlier.

Vice Chancellor (VC) P.K. Abdul Azis constituted a committee to talk to the students’ union, which locked the administrative block and registrar’s office. But president of the union A.A. Farooqui rejected the offer.

Central forces not to camp at schools: CEC

Kolkata, March 22: Chief Election Commissioner S Y Quraishi today said that central and other paramilitary forces would not be allowed to camp inside schools where booths would be set up for the upcoming polls in West Bengal.

“The central and other paramilitary forces will not be allowed to camp inside schools for days since this will affect the functioning of the educational institutions”, Quraishi said at an interactive session at the Merchants’ Chamber of Commerce here.

PGRRCDE(OU) Annual Exams

Hyderabad, March 22: Hall tickets of B.A and B.Com first, second and third year annual examinations of Professor G. Ram Reddy Center for Distance Education, Osmania University, have been dispatched to the candidates, a press release said here.

Candidates who have not received the hall tickets can apply for duplicate hall tickets by submitting two passport size photographs and a demand draft of Rs. 50 drawn in favour of the Register, OU Exam Fee fund Account.

Thousands of UK school staff to lose jobs

England, March 21: British teaching union ATL (Association of Teachers and Lecturers) says thousands of school staff will lose their jobs due to the government’s spending cuts.

ATL campaigners warned that education would inevitably be privatized under the Conservative-Liberal Democrats’ cuts initiative, which imposes the squeeze on school budgets and axes the local authority education services.

As a result, large corporations would run chains of taxpayer-funded schools without any accountability, they added.

‘Indian varsities being promoted in UK’

Hyderabad, March 21: “There are a lot of Indian students who go to the UK or other countries for further studies but we are looking to encourage British students to come to India because this place definitely has some great universities,” said Rob Lynes, director, British Council at a national alumni network meeting that kick-started yesterday. Lynes added, “We have around 110 UK alumni networks and we want to ensure that like-minded individuals across the globe get access to these networks without any hindrance because they can also be used for social networking.”

Hyderabad: 500 Colleges Log Off IT

Hyderabad, March 21: After almost a decade of bull run, the much sought-after IT stream is being dropped by several colleges for want of takers. With the number of students opting for IT in the past two years nose-diving, about 500 colleges from the state have decided to close down their IT classrooms for good. This would mean that just about 200 engineering colleges in the state will be offering IT education in the academic year 2011-12.

Civil Services (IAS/IPS) Prelims exam, last date March 21

Hyderabad, March 19: The Union Service Public Commission will hold the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination, 2011 on June 12, 2011 for recruitment to the Indian Administrative Service, Indian Foreign Service, Indian Police Service and certain other Group ‘A’ and Group ‘B’ Central Services/Posts. Muslim doctor and paramedics required for Haj 2011

Hyderabad, March 19: Ministry of External Affairs invites applications from Muslim doctors and paramedical staff (Government servants only) for temporary deputation to Consulate General of India, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to render medical assistance as Doctors and Paramedics (Allopathic) for Haj – 2011. The period of deputation will be 2-3 months.

Applicants are required to send six passport size photographs along with their application. The last date for receipt of applications in the Ministry is 31st March 2011.

Selected candidates will be issued official passports.

Rajkot student scores full marks in Microsoft exam

Rajkot, March 19: A city boy has become the youngest student to equal the world record of obtaining full 1,000 marks in an online computer exam conducted by US-based multinational Microsoft Corporation.

Akshit Jayesh Dhruv, a Class V student, appeared in the exam on March 16 and obtained full marks, said Chirag Kothari, Centre head of Inside Tomorrow Computer Academy, where the 11-year-old studied.

Nearly 17,000 candidates, from as many as 119 countries and studying from Standard III to post graduates, appeared in the exam in which Akshit was ranked first, Kothari said.

Delhi issues notice to schools on fees hike

New Delhi, March 18: Delhi’s directorate of education (DoE) Friday informed the Delhi High Court that notices have been sent to 25 private schools in the city over fee hike.

The notices come after the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) in its report to the high court termed as ‘unreasonable’ the fee hike by 25 private schools, including Modern school and Delhi Public School (DPS), and indicted them for accounting irregularities.

New Delhi, March 18: Even a little bit of training in the field of tourism will contribute to employment, which is why every state must realise the worth of this sector, Minister of Tourism Subodh Kant Sahai said here Friday.

He was addressing the day-long national seminar on Skills Development in Tourism and Hospitality sector in India organised by the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU).

25 Delhi schools indicted for lapses in accounts

New Delhi, March 18: The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) Thursday has in a report to the Delhi High Court termed as ‘unreasonable’ the fee hike by 25 private city schools, including Modern school and Delhi Public School (DPS), and indicted them for accounting irregularities.

‘The schools did not follow the accounting standards while preparing their final accounts. There was no prescribed accounting format,’ said the CAG report, which runs into 64 pages.

Delhi-based bogus company visits Panjab University

Chandigarh, March 18: Panjab University officials here were left red-faced after they discovered that a Delhi-based company, which conducted campus interviews at its School of Communication Studies (SCS) department for public relations jobs, was bogus.

Panjab University officials Thursday said the managing director of New Delhi-based Laj Group of Companies had visited the department Tuesday and conducted a written test and one-on-one interviews.

Digital Education to be introduced in Goa

Panaji, March 18: Blackboards will soon be replaced with interactive digital screens in Goa with Chief Minister Digambar Kamat saying that smart classes would be introduced in all the colleges across the state on a priority basis.

Hyderabad, March 17: The chief superintendents and departmental officers of Nirmala Hryudaya Junior College and CSI Junior College in Nizamabad district were removed from Intermediate examination duty following allegations.

The RIO of Intermediate Board replaced them today following a complaint from the DRO of Nizamabad stating the officials concerned were not vigilant in duty.

Panos Athanasopoulos, of Newcastle University in Britain, has found that bilingual speakers think differently than those who use only one language.

Hindi institute’s golden jubilee celebrations in Delhi

Agra, March 16: Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal will inaugurate the year-long golden jubilee celebrations of Agra’s Central Hindi Institute in the national capital on March 28.

The Central Hindi Institute was established in 1961 as an educational arm of the then union education ministry to promote Hindi globally.

Punjab, Chandigarh private college teachers on mass leave

Chandigarh, March 15: Demanding a pension scheme, revised salaries, and revocation of ban on recruitment, hundreds of teachers from over 160 professional colleges in Punjab and Chandigarh Tuesday went on mass casual leave.

The teachers held a rally in Sector 25 here, at which they criticised the Punjab government for its failure to implement its own election manifesto promise of a pension and gratuity scheme for teachers of privately managed colleges across Punjab.

The call for the protest was given by the Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union (PCCTU).

Onus on principals to bring back drop-outs

Jaipur, March 14: Alarmed over the staggering number of children who are not attending schools, the Rajasthan government has directed that each government principal be given a target to bring back students who have dropped out.

According to a child tracking system (CTS) survey conducted by the state’s education department, 1.2 million students are out of schools in Rajasthan. And the state’s Directorate of Primary Education in Bikaner moved last week to rectify the situation.
