Food grains and govt’s. top-level mismanagement

In India incessant rise in prices of food grain has been recorded during the last one year. The prices of vegetables and onions were sky rocketing during the past few months. While the price of onion reached to 60 rupees per kg, the prices of Tomato pushed up to 40 rupees per Kg. Prices of other food items ranging from edible oil and rice, to milk and vegetables had shown dramatic increase. People got some relief as the vegetable prices fell during past few weeks. However no considerable fall is seen in prices of other food items.

Pakistan test-fires nuclear-capable missile

Islamabad, March 11: Pakistan’s military says it has test-fired a short-range missile capable of delivering a nuclear warhead.

The Army statement said the “Hataf 2” missile was successfully launched from an undisclosed location on Friday.

It said the surface-to-surface missile has a range of 111 miles (180 kilometres).

It is the second such test by Pakistan in the past month.

Armies routinely test-fire weapons but Pakistan’s program is watched closely because it is a nuclear-armed nation that has fought three wars with neighbour India since 1947.

On the occasion of International Women’s Day President Pratibha Patil lamented that social inequality and prejudices against women still exist in the country. While advocating measures to empower women in every field she regretted that the women’s reservation bill could not be passed in the parliament. On the occasion speaker Lok Sabha Meera Kumar admitted that reservations are imperative for women but as for the provision of 33 percent quota in Lok Sabha and state assemblies there could not be a consensus.

DMK parting ways with UPA?

The alliance of DMK of Tamil Nadu and UPA government led by Congress at the centre is under strain over some political matters. Following the announcement of assembly elections in Tamil Nadu and five other states, it is but natural for the political parties representing at the local and national levels to prefer their political prospects. Hence breakup of Congress-DMK ties doesn’t come as a surprise.

Sensex bounce back at noon

Mumbai, August 16: The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex erased early losses to trade higher by nearly 37 points at Monday noon buying in bluechip stocks available at lower levels.

The 30-share index rose by 36.89 points to 18,203.92 points following a rise in stocks of Reliance Industries and Hero Honda.

The broad-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty also edged up by 13.15 points to 5,465.25 points at the same time. It had opened lower at 5,442.80 points.

Brokers said fresh buying in bluechip stocks by funds helped the Sensex recover early losses.

Another Taliban leader nabbed in Pak: Report

Islamabad, February 18: A second high-ranking Afghan Taliban leader has been captured through a joint US-Pakistani intelligence operation in Pakistan, Fox News reports.

The capture of Mullah Salam, first reported by Newsweek magazine, follows the reported capture of Taliban deputy chief Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar early this month in Pakistan.

AMU to have 250-acre branch in Bihar

Aligarh, November 14:The centre of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in Bihar would come up in 250 acres, instead of 100 acres now, as the Bihar government has allotted an additional 150 acres of land free to the varsity.

“We have received an official communique from the Bihar government over the free of cost allotment of the additional land,” AMU spokesperson Rahat Abrar told reporters in this Utar Pradesh town, some 300 km from state capital Lucknow.

“In the letter, the Bihar government has also emphasised on early opening of the varsity’s centre,” he added.
