Hotel owner arrested, drugs recovered from him

Moga, August 22: A hotel owner has been arrested for illegally possessing narcotics and live cartridges, police said today.

Sukhcharan Singh was arrested last night while trying to escape, they said, adding 200 gram of opium, ten kg poppy husk and 300 live cartridges of a .9 mm pistol were recovered from him.

Earlier on August 19, police had registered a case against Singh and four others after it was found that his hotel was allegedly being used to run trafficking business, supply drugs including poppy and opium.

Trooper lobbed grenade for Rs.5,000

Imphal, August 22:A grenade attack outside a hospital in the restive northeastern state of Manipur that wounded five people Friday was carried out by a paramilitary trooper lured by just Rs.5,000 offered by separatists, officials said Saturday.

A police spokesperson said rifleman T. Munal of the India Reserve Battalion (IRB) lobbed the grenade outside a hospital here.

Priest steals temple jewellery

Tirupati, August 22: In a shocking revelation, the chief priest of a subtemple under the control of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) admitted to having pawned temple jewellery to a private lender to raise money for personal use.

The priest in question, Venkataramana Deekshitulu of Sri Kodandarama Swamy Temple (not the TTD Chief Priest Ramana Deekshitulu) in this town, was taken into custody by the vigilance wing of the TTD. By evening the Vigilance wing lodged a complaint with the police and handed him over to the police and cases of cheating filed against him.

Stalker sends over 5,000 SMSes, lands in jail

Raipur, August 22: A 22-year-old man was arrested for sending 5,231 love messages to a woman in this Chhattisgarh capital, police said Saturday.

Praveen Bhardwaj was arrested and sent to Raipur central jail Thursday after the woman complained of ‘extreme mental harassment’. The mobile phone details show that Praveen made nearly 4,000 missed calls and 5,231 SMSes in a month, a police officer said.

Mauled body of pilgrim recovered at Vaishnodevi

Jammu, August 22: A mauled body of a pilgrim was today recovered from a gorge, enroute to Vaishnodevi shrine, nearly 50-kms from here, police said.

The body was discovered by sweepers this morning while cleaning the tracks at Adhkuwari.

The body was possibly eaten by some wild animals, they added.

The body is beyond recognition and a team of forensic experts has been called in to conduct post-mortem, they said.

Errant bus driver remanded in police custody

Maharashtra, August 22: A day after a school bus caught fire injuring 22 students in Panvel town in Maharashtra’s Raigad district, a city court remanded the driver to three days police custody. Two students are in critical condition, police said Friday.
Meanwhile, authorities at the CKT High School decided to shut the school for two days (Thursday and Friday), said school principal N.M. Jadhav.

Food supply inspector arrested taking bribe

Amritsar, August 22: A Punjab food and supply inspector was arrested red-handed by the Vigilance Bureau (VB) today while accepting bribe at Chabbal village in Tarn Taran district.

On a complaint of Depot holder Sukhwinder Singh of Mianpur village of the district, a VB team arrested Bhupinder Raj Parsad while taking Rs 5,000 as a bribe from the complainant, Sukhdev Singh, SSP VB, said.

The VB team also recovered Rs 50,000 from Parsad, who was unable to disclose the source of the money to them.

Two Chhota Rajan aides arrested in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow, August 22: Two aides of underworld don Chhota Rajan were arrested after a brief gunfight with security personnel in Uttar Pradesh’s Allahabad district, police said Saturday.
Mohammed Masil and Abdul Gufran, both in their early 20s, were arrested Friday evening following a joint operation of the police and Special Operation Group (SOG).

“Masil and Gufran used to take up contracts for killing and abduction in Mumbai for Chhota Rajan’s gang,” police inspector V.P. Singh told IANS on phone from Allahabad, about 200 km from here.

BSF jawan injured in mine blast

Jammu, August 22: A BSF jawan was critically injured in a mine blast near the LoC in Rajouri district, police said today.

Sepoy Mohammad Rafiq of 67 battalion of BSF was patrolling LoC when he stepped over the landmine at Morcha Gap post in Peerbadeshwar area in Rajouri district last night.

Rafiq’s leg was blown up in the blast and his condition was stated to be critical.

The jawan hails from Tamil Nadu.

Mumbai, August 22: Actress Urvashi Dhaanorkar was today arrested for physically abusing her 10-year-old maid.

The minor maid was allegedly roughed up by the actress Urvashi Dhannorkar a week ago.

The minor girl was brought to Mumbai in pretext of adoption and education.

The maid was beaten up brutally and was kept without food. She received injuries around his eyes and other parts of body. The actress kept her captive and burnt her with hot objects. Torture marks were clearly visible on her face.

Budha garden rape case: Court to pronounce quantum of sentence

New Delhi, August 22: A city court will on Saturday pronounce the quantum of sentence on four members of the President’s Bodyguard who were convicted in the 2003 Buddha Jayanti Park gang rape case.

The Patiala Court on Monday had convicted the four under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code. They have been found guilty under sections 394 (robbery), 366 (kidnapping) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.

Students allege ragging in law college in Ghaziabad

Ghaziabad, August 21: Two 1st year students of a private law college here alleged Friday that they had been thrashed by their seniors after they did not cooperate during a ragging session.

The incident occurred in the Mewar Law College in Ghaziabad Friday afternoon.

“Some of us (1st year students), including three girls, were called by our seniors and asked to give our introductions. Soon however, the questions became personal and we objected. Some other seniors, however, intervened and they let us go,” Keshav, one of the victims, told.

49 LPG cylinders seized in Aurangabad, one nabbed

Aurangabad, August 21: The Crime Branch today seized 49 liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders illegally stocked for selling in black market, police sources said today.

The seized cylinders were worth Rs 86,500, they said, adding one person has been nabbed in this connection.

The cylinders, some of the empty, were stocked in a shop in Wadgaon Kolhati village under the jurisdiction of MIDC Waluj police station, the sources said, adding they were from companies like BPCL and HPCL.

Woman raped allegedly by landlord

New Delhi, August 21: A 22-year-old woman was raped allegedly by her landlord in the national capital, police said today.

The woman, who was staying with her mother for the past six months after some problems with her husband, was raped allegedly by Surjeet Singh (32) last night in Mandawli in east Delhi.

The victim was alone in a room while her mother and siblings were sleeping on the terrace when Surjeet assaulted her.

He fled from the spot after the woman started crying for help. She was taken to a hospital by police for a medical examination which confirmed rape.

Fire in coal mine in Asansol; villagers affected

Asansol, August 21: Thousands of villagers have been affected after smoke started blowing out of an underground fire in an illegal coal mine in Sangramgarh colliery in Burdwan district.

The fire, which raged last evening in an open caste mine, has caused inconvenience to around 1500 families living in Samdehi area as they are unable to go out of their houses because of dense smoke surrounding the area.

“We are trying to control the fire by putting sand and earth,” District Magistrate Rajesh Sinha said.

Athani, August 21: A group of around 30 persons armed with sticks and iron weapons attacked the police who had arrested two people in connection with a dacoity case. The group even fled away with the arrested, here on Thursday.
According to police, Kudachi station sub-inspector Anand Waghamore with constables Chougala, Shamsundar, Arabhavi and Badiger had been to Itnal village in Raibag taluk on Thursday to arrest the suspected of a dacoity case which had occurred a few days ago at Kappalguddi village.

Engineering student dies in accident

Hyderabad, August 21: An engineering college student and a 10-year-old boy were among four killed in separate road accidents since Tuesday night in the city and its outskirts.

An engineering student on his way to college, was knocked down by a lorry at Gurramguda Crossroads on Wednesday morning. The youngster, S Akilesh (19), was a BTech (IT) second year student of CVR College of Engineering at Ibrahimpatnam.

Two men shoot cop in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow, August 21: Trying to pacify two young men involved in a street brawl proved dangerous for a police constable as he was shot point blank in Allahabad, officials said today.

The constable, Mohanlal, with a grievous bullet injury in his chest, is fighting for his life in a hospital. The incident took place at the Balson Crossing late on Thursday night when Mohanlal, along with another constable, Radheyshyam Yadav, was going on duty.

Two kg of heroin recovered from border

Ferozepur, August 20: The BSF today recovered two kg of heroin from Dona Telu Mal area along the border here, making it a major haul after yesterday’s narcotic seizure at Gurdaspur sector.

The recovery followed inputs from four arrested Pakistani intruders, who confessed to Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) that a consignment of heroin was concealed near DT Mal area near border fencing and that it could be retrieved by their Indian associates anytime.

Pakistani intruders were arrested near BOP Tapu along with huge quantity of drugs and arms on Sunday.

Police again arrests NRI

Moga, Augusr 20: Police today, after procuring production warrants, again arrested NRI Jagdev Singh who was granted bail yesterday by the court in an alleged case of submitting false deocuments to procure police clearance certificate to get Canadian citizenship.

Police registered another case under section 467 IPC (forgery) against the NRI.

Police again produced Singh in the court seeking police remand of the NRI.

The defence counsel opposed the police plea of registration of another case.

The court did not agree for granting police remand.

2 killed in landslides in West Sikkim

Gangtok, August 20: Two persons were killed and ten others injured as flash flood and landslides triggered by incessant rains wreaked havoc in West Sikkim today.

Puspa Pradhan and Sameer Subba were killed and ten others were injured when a pile of boulders and mudslides fell on their houses due to landslides and flash floods at Sombaria and Daramdin areas in West Sikkim, Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO), Soreng, Bhim Thatal said.

As many as ten houses were damaged or washed away and dozens of cattle perished in the landsldies.

Three held with ancient silver coins worth Rs 23 lakh

Varanasi, August 20: Three persons were arrested from Chetganj area here with over 7,500 British period silver coins worth over Rs 23 lakhs seized from them, police said today. Superintendent of Police (City) Vijay Bhushan, said that over 7,500 ancient silver coins weighing 68.3 kg dating back to 1861 and 1892 were recovered from three men who were arrested last night.

Child dies as building collapse, CM sanctions Rs 50,000 relief

Chennai, August 20: A three-year-old child was killed and two others sustained injuries when a portion of an Anganwadi centre building collapsed last evening in Tuticorin district of Tamil Nadu.

The toddler Jaiganesh, who sustained serious injury and admitted to a private hospital in Tuticorin, succumbed to injuries today, while two others were being treated.

Expressing his anguish and grief over the incident, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, considering the poor family condition, sanctioned a relief of Rs 50,000 to the family of Jaiganesh, an official release here said.

Three arrested with fake currency in Juhu

Mumbai, August 20: Three persons were arrested with fake currency in the face value of Rs 78,300 from suburban Juhu, police said today. The three, identified as Ajgar Quereshi, Sakeer Siddique and Matloob Quereshi and aged between 35 to 40 years, were nabbed yesterday when they were waiting for their ”client” at a depot in suburban Juhu with the counterfeit notes, they said.
