Mother kills child, commit suicide

Erode, August 29 A woman allegedly committed suicide after killing her 18-month-old son at Velliyampalayam in the district, police said here today.

Police said that the 25-year-old woman poured kerosene over her son and set him fire when her husband was away yesterday. Later she also self immolated, police said.

Neighbours, on seeing smoke coming out of the house, informed the police.

Two men arrested with heroin

Lucknow, August 29: Two men have been arrested with nearly three kg of heroin in Uttar Pradesh. The drug was suspected to have been supplied from Pakistan, police said Saturday.
Arvind Kumar and Janendra Jaiswal – both in mid 20s – were Friday nabbed near the Mugalsarai railway station at Chandauli, about 300 km from Lucknow, jointly by the Special Operation Group (SOG) and police.

“Kumar and Jaiswal have confessed that Shabbir Ahmad, based in Kota in Rajasthan, supplied them heroin from Pakistan,” Chandauli district police chief Lakshminarayan told IANS.

Producer held for molesting singer

Mumbai, August 29: A Bollywood producer was arrested by the Mumbai police for allegedly molesting a woman pop singer on Friday night, sources said.

According to the sources, the incident took place during a launching of music album here at Time and Ogden hall in Mumbai’s Andheri locality.

The drunken producer Ashok Khullar climbed on the stage and started molesting the pop singer on full public view.

The singer has lodged a complaint against Khullar at Amboli police station. The police have registered a case against Khullar under IPC section 504, 506.

Two found dead in stranded car

Amritsar, August 29: Two persons including an unmarried girl, were found dead in a stranded car on the outskirts of the city today, police said.

It seems both died due to asphyxia, police said.

Police said that the exact cause of death could be known only after the autopsy report and the bodies were sent to Government medical college for postmortem.

The dead were identified as Sharanjit Singh employed as teacher in Government school in the city whereas girl Arvinder Kaur was traced unmarried but close relative of the former.

Woman alongwith son commits suicide

Gurdaspur, August 29: A woman along with her four-year-old son committed suicide by allegedly jumping in front of a running passenger train near Dinanagar about, 12 km from here, today, police said.

The Marital conflict is considered to be cause of the suicide, police said.

Both the bodies of the woman and sibling son after postmortem was handed over to the family members of the woman.

The woman was identified as Kashmir Kaur(32), wife of Satnam Singh, resident of Naushehra village falling under the Dorangle police station and her son as Amaritpal Singh, nursery student.

Building collapse: Two file anticipatory bail application

Mumbai, August 29: Two shopowners at the Yusuf Manzil -which partially collapsed early this week killing a woman- have filed anticiaptory bail application, fearing arrest as police have lodged a case of culpable homicide against them.

Construction carried out by Yusuf Memon and his son Irfan, who own an electrical appliances’ shop at the ground floor of the building led to its collapse, according to police.

Sessions court will hear the application on August 31.

Villager arrested for raping minor

Srinagar, August 29: A man was arrested for allegedly raping a minor in Nowshera area of Rajouri district, 160 km from here, police said today. The accused identified as 32-year-old Satvir Singh allegedly sexually assaulted a 7-year-old girl in his house in village Sair in Bhawani area of the district yesterday evening, police said, adding he later escaped from the spot.

The victim narrated the incident to her family following which a case was registered with the police.

3 women injured in attacks by wild animals

Srinagar, August 29: Three women were seriously injured in two separate incidents of attacks by wild animals in Kupwara and Baramulla districts of north Kashmir, police said. A bear attacked and injured two women in Kupwara while another was attacked by a leopard in Uri in Baramulla this morning, police said.

Rafiqa and Hafiza Begum, residents of Rashanpora village in Kupwara, 90 kms from here, had gone to jungle to collect firewood when they were attacked by the bear. The two were seriously injured in the incident and have been admitted to a hospital, police said.

Doctors’ strike kills 21 in Bihar hospital

Patna, August 29: Twenty-one patients in the Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) have died after a strike by junior doctors that entered its third day Saturday, authorities said.

“While six patients died Thursday, 15 died in the last 24 hours. Lack of doctors in the emergency ward led to most deaths,” a government official said.

More than 400 junior doctors are on an indefinite strike from Thursday demanding hike in their stipends.

The strike has badly hit the emergency, outdoor and surgery services in the hospital.

Child killed 3 injured in kotha collapse in Kashmir

Srinagar, August 29: A child was killed and three others were injured when a Gujjar kotha collapsed in the frontier district of Kupwara in north Kashmir.

The issue was also raised by a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member Abdul Haq Khan in the Legislative Assembly.

Official sources said a kotha of Bagu collapsed at Narikote Kalarooch in the frontier district of Kupwara resulting in on the spot death of a child Rubani, son of the house owner.

Three others, including house owner, Javid Ahmad and Sadeeq were also injured.

Ship carrying banned weapons seized: UAE

New York/Seoul, August 29: The United Arab Emirates claims to have seized a ship carrying banned weapons from North Korea bound for Iran, diplomatic sources said in New York.

The incident, which took place earlier this month, was apparently reported to the North Korea sanctions panel of the UN Security Council by the UAE.

South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported Saturday that the panel was to meet soon to discuss the case.

The weapons, among them grenade launchers, had been listed as machine parts on the ship’s manifesto, the report said.

Two men arrested with heroin

Lucknow, August 29: Two men have been arrested with nearly three kg of heroin in Uttar Pradesh. The drug was suspected to have been supplied from Pakistan, police said Saturday.

Five dead, eight injured in Raj road mishap

Jaipur, August 29: Five persons were killed and eight others injured when a jeep in which they were travelling collided with a truck on a highway in Rajasthan”s Churu district today. The incident happened near Sujangarh area in Churu town, 206 km from Jaipur.

The victims were coming after offering prayer at Salasar Balaji temple in Sikar district, police said. The victims were rushed to a nearby hospital where five of them, including two women, were declared brought dead.

The condition of eight of them were stated to be serious, they said.

Girl stripped in class by teacher over unpaid fees

Faridabad, August 29: A nine-year-old girl was stripped in front of her classmates by her teacher in a Faridabad school on Friday afternoon over alleged non-payment of fees.

The girl (name withheld) is a Class III student of Faridabad Model School, Sector-31.

The girl’s father, Mukesh Pawar, said the family has been exempted by district administration from paying fees based on the quota for the economically deprived Pawar is an autorickshaw driver.

Former student leader arrested for conspiring to kill Sukhbir Badal

Chandigarh, August 29: The Punjab Police have arrested former All India Sikh Students Federation (AISSF) chief Daljit Bittu for allegedly conspiring to kill Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, an official said Friday.

Bittu was arrested Thursday night from his home in Ludhiana, some 100 km from here.

He was conspiring to stage terrorist attacks in Punjab in the coming months and his six accomplices were arrested earlier, the police official said.

Blood racket: Samples found to be contaminated

Lucknow, August 28: Contaminated and sub-standard blood was being administered to patients by some private blood banks suspected to be involved in a major racket busted by the Uttar Pradesh Police, sources said.

This was revealed in a report submitted to the government by the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) here Friday.

Six people, including an anaesthetist from the state-run Balrampur Hospital, were arrested in connection with the racket, being run with the connivance of several well-known private blood banks and doctors.

12 injured in lathicharge

Ghaziabad, August 28: At least 12 people were injured when police used canes to disperse fans protesting after filmstar Salman Khan did not turn up for a scheduled prograame at a mall here.

A large number of people had gathered at the Shopprix mall where the bollywood actor and his brother Suhail Khan were due to inaugurate a jewellery shop yesterday.

But the fans got infuriated when only Suhail came for the function and started protesting against the organisers following which police cane charged the gathering.

One held, 26 identified for burning train in Bihar

Patna, August 28: A man who was part of a mob that torched a Delhi-Patna train in Bihar 10 days ago has been arrested, police said Friday.

So far, 26 people have been identified through video clippings provided by news channels as being part of the group that set fire to the Shramjivi Express Aug 18 following an altercation with Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel, Deputy Inspector General (Railway Police) Arvind Pandey said.

Malaysian police on manhunt for Pakistani facing rape charge

Kuala Lumpur, August 28: Malaysian police have launched a manhunt for a Pakistani man who jumped bail after being charged with raping and sodomizing his 15-year-old stepdaughter, reports said Monday.

The accused, 29, was arrested in September 2006 after his Malaysian wife lodged a report against him, alleging that he had raped and sodomized her daughter, the Star daily reported.

He was charged with 12 counts of rape and two counts of carnal intercourse, and had posted bail but did not turn up in court on July 2, prompting a warrant of arrest to be issued.

Thai woman gets life for slaying Canadian husband

Bangkok, August 28: A provincial court sentenced a Thai woman to life imprisonment for masterminding the murder of her Canadian husband last year, media reports said Friday.

The Ranong provincial court on Thursday found Maneerat Henry, Amornsak Katekaew and Jinda Sae Tae guilty of conspiring to murder Dale George Henry on February 3, 2008, the Bangkok Post reported.

Their sentences were commuted from the death penalty to life in prison after they confessed to the crime.

Duo out for a ride killed in mishap

Mumbai, August 28: Ganpati celebrations ended on a sad note for residents of a housing society in Kandivli after two youths from their neighbourhood were killed in a bike accident early on Thursday.

Close friends Chintan Sedani (20) and Jayesh Bhagat (22) suffered multiple injuries after the bike spun out of control and banged into a divider and was then dragged for 15 feet. They were later declared dead by doctors at Bhagawati Hospital. Minutes before heading for the ride, the duo had attended a cultural programme for the sarvajanik Ganpati in their building.

Raped baby struggling for life in hospital

Jamshedpur, August 28: A one-and-a-half-year-old girl, who was allegedly raped by her neighbour, was struggling for life in the intensive care unit (paediatrics) of Tata Main hospital here.

The baby was still in a state of drowsiness and has been put on oxygen as her condition was unstable, hospital sources said today.

The girl was raped on Tuesday night by a youth, who lifted her through an open window of her house in Carriage Colony Muslim bustee, when she was sleeping.

After raping the girl, the youth fled the spot leaving her crying, her father Atar Khan said.

Contaminated water kills three children in Madhya Pradesh

Bhopal, August 28: Three children, including a six-month-old boy, have died and more than 100 people are ill after they consumed contaminated water in Khargone district, 350 km from here, police said Friday.

The incident came to light Thursday when members of the Banjara-dominated community in the district started falling ill one after the other and made a beeline for the only health dispensary.

‘This alarmed the health officials who in turn informed the administrative officials and started treating the patients,’ Chandresh Dikshit, a medical officer said.

Wipro staffer commits suicide in Bangalore

Bangalore, August 28: A man in his late twenties allegedly committed suicide in Bangalore. The deceased, Vishal Yadav (28), was an employee of Wipro Technologies.

Vishal allegedly jumped off the 12-floor Wipro building. But keeping all the angles open the police were trying to ascertain if it was an accidental fall or whether it was done deliberately by somebody else.
